Volcanic rocks related to the Guamsan cadera, which find in the southeastern Cheongsong, are divided into Volcanic breccia, Guamsan Tuff and Post-collapse intrusions. We determined their eruption, intrusion and caldera-forming timings based on SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating. The dating results yield earlier eruption age of $63.77{\pm}0.94Ma$ from the lower ash-flow tuff and an later eruption age of $60.1{\pm}1.8Ma$ from the upper ash-flow tuff of the Guamsam Tuff, and intrusion age of $60.65{\pm}0.95Ma$ from the rhyolite ring dyke of the Post-collapse intrusions. The age data suggest that the Guamsan caldera is formed in 60.65~60.1 Ma between eruption of the upper ash-flow tuff and intrusion of the rhyolite ring dyke. The Guamsan cadera exhibits the volcanic processes of a perfect igneous cycle passing from ash-flow eruptions through caldera collapse to ring intrusions during 63.77~60.1 Ma.
The study area, Bonggil-ri, Gyeongju, SE Korea, is composed of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, and Tertiary igneous rocks and dykes. A research on fracture developing history and density distribution was carried out on well exposed Tertiary granites. The fractures developed in this area have the following sequence; NW-SE trending duo-tile shear bands (set a), NNW-SSE trending extensional fractures (set d), WNW-ESE trending extensional or normal fractures (set b), NE-SW trending right-lateral fractures (set c), WNW-ESE trending reverse fault reactivated from normal faults (set e) and NW-SE trending left-lateral faults reactivated from shear bands (set a) under brittle condition. According to the result of fracture density analysis, the fracture density in this area depends on rock property rather than rock age, and also higher fracture density is observed around fault damage zones. However, this high fracture density may also be related to the cooling process associated with dyke intrusion as well as rock types and fault movement. Regardless of the reason of the high fracture density, high fracture density itself contributes to fluid flow and migration of chemical elements.

A multi-geophysical surveys were carried out at Hwasan caldera which is located in Euisung Sub-basin. In order to overcome the limitation of the previous studies, dense gravity data and magnetotelluric (MT) data were obtained and integrated. In this study, the independent inversion models from gravity and MT method were integrated using a correlation and classification approaches to map geologic structure. The results of integration analysis indicated followings; 1) pyroclastic rocks around the central area of Hwasan caldera have lower density and resistivity when compared with those of neighborhood regions and are extended to around 1 km in depth, 2) the high resistivity and density intrusive igneous rocks are imaged around the ring fault boundary, and 3) the basement structure, which has low resistivity and high density, 5 km deep inferred by integration analysis. Also, for integration analysis, we suggested Structure Index method. This method is analyzed using Type Angle and Type Intensity, which are calculated by the spatial correlation of the physical properties. In this study, we can perform the integration analysis effectively using Structure Index method.
In the Hapcheon area, hypersthene-bearing monzonite (mangerite) and syenite are recognized. The main minerals of syenite are alkali feldspar, plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, and quartz. Anhedral hornblende and biotite are interstitial between feldspar and quartz, indicating that the hydrous minerals were crystallized later on. Based on petrochemical studies of major elements, syenite is alkaline series, metaluminous, and I-type. The variation patterns in the trace and rare earth elements of mangerite and syenite show the features of subduction-related igneous rock such as depletion of HFSE, relative enrichment in LILE to LREE, and negative Nb-P-Ti anomalies. Based on the experimental data and petrographic characteristics of the syenite, Hapcheon syenitic magma is considered to be formed by partial melting in a dry system. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon data yield the Triassic age as $227.4{\pm}1.4Ma$ in mangerite, $215.3{\pm}1.2Ma$ in syenite, and $217.9{\pm}2.6Ma$ in coarse-grained syenite, respectively. The mangerite age is similar to those of post-collisional plutonic rocks in Hongseong (226~233 Ma), Yangpyeong (227~231 Ma), and Odaesan (231~234 Ma) areas in the Gyeonggi Massif. Syenites were intruded after about 10 Ma. The features seen in the mangereite and syenite rocks can be explained by models such as the continental collision and slab break-off and the lithosphere thinning and asthenosphere upwelling model.
This study was performed for exploring the spatial distribution pattern of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. in Korea. Firstly, the spatial distribution map of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. was prepared in grid of $100m{\times}100m$ at national level, using digital forest type map and actual vegetation map. And thematic maps for topography, climate, and soil were also prepared in the raster form of $100m{\times}100m$. Through GIS based spatial analysis of the digital distribution map of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. and thematic maps, the spatial characteristics of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. distribution was explored in relation to the environmental factors such as topography, climate, and soil. And the occurrence frequency models of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. were derived. Pinus densiflora occurs more often than Quercus spp. at low elevation, low slope gradient, and high temperature areas. In addition, Pinus densiflora is mainly distributed at shallow and well-drained loamy soil from igneous rocks. In contrast, Quercus spp. is more common at shallow and well-drained loamy soil from metamorphic rocks. As a result, the prediction model for the spatial distribution of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. by topographical variables has proven successful with high statistical significance. The result of this study can contribute to rational management of Pinus densiflora and Quercus spp. stand in Korea, considering environmental factors such as topography, climate, and soil.
Rock structural and microstructural analyses on the deformed Cheongsan granite, which is characterized by abundant feldspar megacrystals, have been carried out to understand the microstructural change during the mylonitization by ductile shear deformation. In K-feldspars, the characteristic microstructures are recognized as microkinks, microfractures, myrmekites, flame perthites, and core-and-mantle structures without the development of subgrains in outer core-zone. Microkinks are observed in both the microfractured and unmicrofractured K-feldspars and the directions of their axes are generally extended across the adjacent K-feldspar fragments bounded by microfractures. Myrmekites and flame perthites are found on the strain-localized boundaries of the microfractured K-feldspars. In plagiclases, microfractures, deformation twins and kink bands are predominant. Grain size reduction of plagioclase megacrysts also occurs by microfracturing but the core-and-mantle structures like the case of K-feldspars are uncommon in the microfractured plagioclases. The deformation twins, which overlap the igneous zoning structures, are often found in less deformed rocks. The twin lamellae in more deformed rocks generally bisect the obtuse angles of conjugate kink-band boundaries, and are microfractured or microfaulted and randomly oriented. From such characteristic microstructures, thus, it can be suggested that the micostructures during the mylonitzation of Cheongsan granite was developed as follows: production of microkinks in the K-feldspar megacrysts and of deformation twins and kink bands in the plagioclase megacrysts, and then grain-size reduction of the feldspar megacrysts through microfracturing, and then production of core-and-mantle structures (grain-size reduction of the microfractured K-feldspars through grain boundary migration), myrmekites and flame perthites in the microfractured K-feldspars.
We present petrography, mineral chemistry of amphibole and plagioclase, and major and trace element chemistry for the Ogcheon metabasites occurring in the Poun and Mungyong areas to understand metamorphism, and to define chemical characteristics of parental rocks and their implication for tectonic environment. The Ogcheon metabasites often preserve relict igneous textures, although no primary phases are observed. They are mainly composed of amphibole (actinolite+hornblende)+plagioclase+epidote+chlorite+sphene+opaque oxides, indicating epidote amphibolite facies metamorphism. Coarse-grained amphiboles frequently have actinolitic composition in the core, and hornblende along the margin and cleavage, which can be interpreted either as miscibility gap or as result of polymetamorphism. Although presumed polymetamorphic events in the Ogcheon supergroup favor the latter possibility, further metamorphic studies are necessary to solve the problem. Amphibole and plagioclase chemistries suggest greenschist (epidote-amphibolite, if miscibility gap is present) to amphibolite facies metamorphism of possibly medium pressure. The major and trace element data of whole rocks indicate that the Ogcheon metabasites are transitional to tholeiitic basalts belonging to within-plate environment. Absence of evidences indicating deep sea environment suggests that the Ogcheon metabasites emplaced in an intra-cratonic, possibly rift environment which failed to proceed to an oceanic rift. Chemical variation of the metabasites toward a granitic pluton indicates K loss closer to the pluton, suggesting that caution should be taken when K is involved in a discussion.
In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating was performed on deformed granitic rocks in the Sancheong area in the northeastern part of the Jirisan area, southwest of Yeongnam Massif. Until now, these have been known as Precambrian or age-unknown old igneous rocks, but the U-Pb concordant ages obtained from two samples are $237.8{\pm}4.0Ma$ and $230.2{\pm}3.4Ma$, respectively, showing their emplacements in Early to Middle Triassic. These results indicate that the deformed granite was emplaced at about 238~230 Ma. The study area shows the characteristics of ductile deformation with prominent development of foliation, augen structure, and lineation. It is observed that the deformed granites occur as xenoliths within the syenite, indicating that the time of deformation is earlier than the intrusion of the syenite of about 220 Ma. The emplacement and deformation periods of the deformed granite is similar to that of Permo-Triassic granite gneisses distributed in the Gimcheon and Andong areas of the Yeongnam Massif. Taken together, the eastern part of the Yeongnam Massif, extending from the central part to the southwestern part, granite intrusions occurred at about 260-230 Ma, followed by metamorphism-deformation of about 230-220 Ma.
We evaluated the distributions of primordial radionuclides and effective dose rate of the Ogcheon Group, which includes rocks with high uranium content. Terrestrial gamma radiation was measured at 421 points using a portable gamma ray spectrometer. Dividing the study area into five geological units (og1, og2, og3, og4, and igneous rocks) revealed no significant difference in the concentration of surface radioactivity among the types. The concentrations of 40K, eU, and eTh for all samples ranged from 0.7% to 10.3% (average 5.2%), 0.6 to 287.0 ppm (average 8.5 ppm), and 4.0 to 102.4 ppm (average 31.3 ppm), respectively. The absorbed dose rate in the study area (calculated from the activity concentrations of 40K, eU, and eTh) was in the range of 28.84 to 1,714.5 nGy/h (average 195.4 nGy/h). Among the five geological units, the lowest average was 166.3 nGy/h (for og1) and the highest average was 233.3 nGy/h (for og2; median 198.1 nGy/h). The outdoor effective dose rate for the area obtained from the absorbed dose rate was in the range of 0.04 to 2.10 mSv/y (average 0.24 mSv/y). Except for the four sites located in the uranium-bearing coal bed of og2, none of the studied sites exceeded 1 mSv/y.
The Gasado Au-Ag deposit is located within the south-western margin of the Hanam-Jindo basin. The geology of the Gasado is composed of the late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks and acidic or intermediate igneous rocks. Within the deposit area, there are a number of hydrothermal quartz and calcite veins, formed by narrow open space filling along subparallel fractures in the late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sedimentary rock. Vein mineralization at the Gasado is characterized by several textural varieties such as chalcedony, drusy, comb, bladed, crustiform and colloform. The textures have been used as exploring indicators of the epithermal deposit. Mineral paragenesis can be divided into two stages (stage I, ore-bearing quartz veins; stage II, barren carbonate veins) considering major tectonic fracturing event. Stage I, at which the precipitation of Au-Ag bearing minerals occurred, is further divided into three substages (early, middle and late) with paragenetic time based on minor fractures and discernible mineral assemblages: early, marked by deposition of pyrite and pyrrhotite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite and electrum; middle, characterized by introduction of electrum and base-metal sulfides with minor argentite; late, marked by argentite and native silver. Au-Ag-bearing mineralization at the Gasado deposit occurred under the condition between initial high temperatures (≥290℃) and later lower temperatures (≤130℃). Changes in stage I vein mineralogy reflect decreasing temperature and fugacity of sulfur (≈10-10.1 to ≤10-18.5atm) by evolution of the Gasado hydrothermal system with increasing paragenetic time. The Gasado deposit may represents an epithermal gold-silver deposit which was formed near paleo-surface.
