  • Clouds are composed of tiny water droplets, ice crystals, or mixtures suspended in the atmosphere and cover about two-thirds of the Earth's surface. Cloud detection in satellite images is a very difficult task to separate clouds and non-cloud areas because of similar reflectance characteristics to some other ground objects or the ground surface. In contrast to thick clouds, which have distinct characteristics, thin transparent clouds have weak contrast between clouds and background in satellite images and appear mixed with the ground surface. In order to overcome the limitations of transparent clouds in cloud detection, this study conducted cloud detection focusing on transparent clouds using machine learning techniques (Random Forest [RF], Convolutional Neural Networks [CNN]). As reference data, Cloud Mask and Cirrus Mask were used in MOD35 data provided by MOderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the pixel ratio of training data was configured to be about 1:1:1 for clouds, transparent clouds, and clear sky for model training considering transparent cloud pixels. As a result of the qualitative comparison of the study, bothRF and CNN successfully detected various types of clouds, including transparent clouds, and in the case of RF+CNN, which mixed the results of the RF model and the CNN model, the cloud detection was well performed, and was confirmed that the limitations of the model were improved. As a quantitative result of the study, the overall accuracy (OA) value of RF was 92%, CNN showed 94.11%, and RF+CNN showed 94.29% accuracy.

  • The East Sea, one of the regions where the most rapid warming is occurring, is known to have important implications for the response of the ocean to future climate changes because it not only reacts sensitively to climate change but also has a much shorter turnover time (hundreds of years) than the ocean (thousands of years). However, the processes underlying changes in seawater characteristics at the sea's deep and abyssal layers, and meridional overturning circulation have recently been examined only after international cooperative observation programs for the entire sea allowed in-situ data in a necessary resolution and accuracy along with recent improvement in numerical modeling. In this review, previous studies on the physical characteristics of seawater at deeper parts of the East Sea, and meridional overturning circulation are summarized to identify any remaining issues. The seawater below a depth of several hundreds of meters in the East Sea has been identified as the Japan Sea Proper Water (East Sea Proper Water) due to its homogeneous physical properties of a water temperature below 1℃ and practical salinity values ranging from 34.0 to 34.1. However, vertically high-resolution salinity and dissolved oxygen observations since the 1990s enabled us to separate the water into at least three different water masses (central water, CW; deep water, DW; bottom water, BW). Recent studies have shown that the physical characteristics and boundaries between the three water masses are not constant over time, but have significantly varied over the last few decades in association with time-varying water formation processes, such as convection processes (deep slope convection and open-ocean deep convection) that are linked to the re-circulation of the Tsushima Warm Current, ocean-atmosphere heat and freshwater exchanges, and sea-ice formation in the northern part of the East Sea. The CW, DW, and BW were found to be transported horizontally from the Japan Basin to the Ulleung Basin, from the Ulleung Basin to the Yamato Basin, and from the Yamato Basin to the Japan Basin, respectively, rotating counterclockwise with a shallow depth on the right of its path (consistent with the bottom topographic control of fluid in a rotating Earth). This horizontal deep circulation is a part of the sea's meridional overturning circulation that has undergone changes in the path and intensity. Yet, the linkages between upper and deeper circulation and between the horizontal and meridional overturning circulation are not well understood. Through this review, the remaining issues to be addressed in the future were identified. These issues included a connection between the changing properties of CW, DW, and BW, and their horizontal and overturning circulations; the linkage of deep and abyssal circulations to the upper circulation, including upper water transport from and into the Western Pacific Ocean; and processes underlying the temporal variability in the path and intensity of CW, DW, and BW.

  • To assess trans fatty acids (tFAs) intake of middle school students in Busan, behavior of having meals and 3 day's food record were surveyed in 800 subjects. 35.3% of subjects responded to twice a day in frequency of snack intake. Preferred snack items were ice cream (68.6%) and milk (57.0%). Subjects of dining out preferred jajangmyon (54.6%), seasoned chicken (50.5%), fried chicken (35-3%) in order when dined out. Mean daily tFAs intake of subjects was 1.68$\pm$0.04 g. Mean daily intake level of girls was 1.89$\pm$0.06 g which was significantly higher than that of boys, 1.40 $\pm$ 0.05 g (p<0.001). Naturally derived tFAs intake was 1.04$\pm$0.03 g which corresponded to 62.1% of total tFAs intake per day and industrially derived tFAs intake was 0.64 $\pm$ 0.02 g, 37.9% of total tFAs intake per day. Calorie percentage of tFAs was 0.8% and fat percentage of tFAs was 3.16%. The level of tFAs intake showed a significant difference with monthly allowance (p<0.05) and frequency of snack intake (p<0.001) in girls, which was not the case in boys. The main sources of tFAs were milk and dairy products (34.3%), bakeries (18.3%), and fish and meat products (16.2%), in order. From above results, we can conclude that tFAs intake of middle school student is not as much as that of Western teenagers. However, exact estimation of tFAs intake requires database of tFAs in broad range of processed foods commonly consumed in Korea.

  • This study aims to develop the NABI program, which can be applied to science education in school, to realize 'Science Education through Nature' for today's students. The first NABI program was developed based on the viewpoints of education and teaching methods of Nature-Study, and it was revised as the second NABI program through experts' workshop. The second NABI program was applied to 24 third-grade students of an elementary school. The possibility of applying the program to school science education was explored through the analysis of students' qualitative data, along with surveys that were completed by 24 students and 79 current teachers. As a result of applying the program, students were curious about and communed with nature. The program could also realize the learner-centered education and integration of subjects, science with literature and art. The students were interested and wanted to continually participate in the NABI program. The teachers' evaluation of the program deduced that the relationship between the program presenting Nature-Study ideologies could be applied to science education in school. In conclusion, it was found that the NABI program was well reflected in the scope of the Nature-Study, and it can be applied to science education in school. The NABI program proceeds in nine steps: 'Accepting - Choosing - Selecting the common subject - Ice Breaking - Making relationship - Observing - Scaffolding - Expressing - Sharing'. The NABI program is a good way to realize the essence of science education, 'Science Education through Nature', for today's students.

  • Background: Preanalytical factors can affect reliability of hormone assay results. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in blood is considered highly unstable because of proteolytic degradation, so storage of blood samples on ice until analysis is recommended. In clinical practice, however, this procedure may present logistical problems because most samples for ACTH measurement must be shipped from the place of sample collection to the laboratory. Therefore, we studied the impact of time and temperature before plasma separation and analysis on the results of ACTH assays. Methods: A total number of 22 patients were enrolled in this study. We obtained 2 blood samples. ACTH concentrations were 35~126 pg/mL. ACTH concentrations were measured by immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) using commercial kits (CIS Biointernational, Gif-sur-Yvette, France). Results: ACTH levels showed a significant difference between the samples of $22^{\circ}C$ EDTA and $4^{\circ}C$ EDTA. Measured ACTH concentrations significantly decreased with time before freezing at $-20^{\circ}C$. ACTH levels showed no significant difference between the groups of after storage for 24 hr without centrifugation at $22^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: We recommend that blood samples be obtained on pre-chilled EDTA collection tubes. The shortest possible time between sample collection and processing is always the best laboratory practice.

  • Soong-Neung is a Korean traditional beverage served after meals and is made from cooked and roasted rice produced on the bottom of the container during the rice cooking process. The volatiles from the extract of cooked and roasted rice were separated into pyrazine and carbonyl fractions and qualitatively investigated. The pyrazine fraction was characterized by gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and five pyrazines were positively identified. Pyrazine compounds identified are 2-methylpyrazine, 2,3-dimethylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2-ethyl-5-methylpyrazine and 2-ethyl-3-methylpyrazine. Carbonyls were converted to their 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones and identified by gas chromatography, combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and thin layer chromatography. Acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, iso-butyraldehyde and iso-valeraldehyde were positively identified in the carbonyl compounds. The aroma of the fractions indentified as 2,3-dimethylpyrazine and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine had a nut-like or roasted cereal-like flavor, which is one of the characteristic flavors of Soong-Neung.

  • Capacitively-coupled resistivity (CCR) system is known to be very useful where galvanic contact to earth is impossible, such as the area covered with thick ice, snow, concrete or asphalt. This system injects current non-galvanically, i.e., capacitively to earth through line antenna and measures potential difference in a same manner. We derived geometric factor for two types of antenna configuration and presented the method of processing and converting the data obtained with CCR system suitable to conventional resistivity inversion analysis. The CCR system, however, has limitations on use at conductive area or electrically noisy area since it is very difficult to inject sufficient current to earth with this system as with conventional resistivity system. This causes low SM ratio when acquiring data with CCR system and great care must be taken in acquiring data with this system. Additionally the uniform contact between line antennas and earth is also crucial factor to obtain good S/N ratio data. The CCR method, however, enables one to perform continuous profiling over a survey line by dragging entire system and thus will be useful in rapid investigation of conductivity distribution in shallow subsurface.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the hygienic state and awareness of drink vending machines in a city. Methods: Twelve of the most frequently used vending machines in various areas were selected in October 2008. As soon as fresh samples of milk coffee and adlay tea were collected in sterile containers from each machine, the temperature was measured. The samples were carried on ice to the laboratory to test total plate counts and Escherichia coli contamination. College students were inquired about drink vending machine hygiene by implementing self-developed questionnaires. Results: The temperature of 6 milk coffee samples (50.0%) and 8 adlay tea samples (66.7%) turned out to be inadequate. The total plate counts of milk coffee samples were all adequate, although 9 adlay tea samples (75.0%) were inadequate. All the beverage samples were negative for E. coli. In questionnaires obtained from 74 users of coffee vending machines, only 2 (2.7%) expected the hygienic state of vending machines to be good. There were 27 people (33.3%) that knew the existence of hygiene-related laws for vending machines. Conclusions: This study reveals that the hygienic state of drink vending machines insufficiently reaches the standard for the hot beverage and that most people are not aware of importance of vending machine hygiene. It is necessary to make improvement in the hygiene of vending machines and public awareness in this city.
