This study measures the change of ice flow velocity of David Glacier, one of the fast-moving glaciers in East Antarctica that drains through Drygalski Ice Tongue. In order to effectively observe the rapid flow velocity, we applied the offset tracking technique to Sentinel-1A SAR images obtained from 2016 to 2020 with 36-day temporal baseline. The resulting velocity maps were averaged and the two relatively fast points (A1 and A2) were selected for further time-series analysis. The flow velocity increased during the Antarctic summer (around December to March) over the four years' observation period probably due to the ice surface melting and reduced friction on the ice bottom. Bedmap2 showed that the fast flow velocities at A1 and A2 are associated with a sharp decrease in the ice surface and bottom elevation so that ice volumetric cross-section narrows down and the crevasses are being created on the ice surface. The local maxima in standard deviation of ice velocity, S1 and S2, showed random temporal fluctuation due to the rotational ice swirls causing error in offset tracking method. It is suggested that more robust offset tracking method is necessary to incorporate rotational motion.
Collapse of an Antarctic ice shelf and its flow velocity changes has the potential to reduce the restraining stress to the seaward flow of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which can cause sea level rising. In this study, variations in ice velocity from 2000 to 2017 for the Nansen Ice Shelf in East Antarctica that experienced a large-scale collapse in April 2016 were analyzed using Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images. To extract ice velocity, image matching based on orientation correlation was applied to the image pairs of blue, green, red, near-infrared, panchromatic, and the first principal component image of the Landsat multispectral data, from which the results were combined. The Landsat multispectral image matching produced reliable ice velocities for at least 14% wider area on the Nansen Ice Shelf than for the case of using single band (i.e., panchromatic) image matching. The ice velocities derived from the Landsat multispectral image matching have the error of $2.1m\;a^{-1}$ compared to the in situ Global Positioning System (GPS) observation data. The region adjacent to the Drygalski Ice Tongue showed the fastest increase in ice velocity between 2000 and 2017. The ice velocity along the central flow line of the Nansen Ice Shelf was stable before 2010 (${\sim}228m\;a^{-1}$). In 2011-2012, when a rift began to develop near the ice front, the ice flow was accelerated (${\sim}255m\;a^{-1}$) but the velocity was only about 11% faster than 2010. Since 2014, the massive rift had been fully developed, and the ice velocity of the upper region of the rift slightly decreased (${\sim}225m\;a^{-1}$) and stabilized. This means that the development of the rift and the resulting collapse of the ice front had little effect on the ice velocity of the Nansen Ice Shelf.

Recently, a great attention has been paid to the ice thermal storage system for the purpose of energy saving and reduction in peak electrical demand. In the present study, it has been investigated the freezing behavior of several kinds of water solutions with nonionic surfactant. In order to prevent ice blockage in a cooled pipe, the amount and wall adhesion behavior of ice of the test fluids were observed experimentally under different concentration of water solution with surfactant, temperature of cooled wall, and the shear velocity of test fluids. The results showed that the size of ice crystal became smaller at higher shear velocity at wall. And the lowest limit of wall adhesion of ice in water solution with surfactant was found at 230 W/$m^2$ of heat flux.

This paper describes the characteristic analysis of ice impact force for the Arctic structure shape. In the present study an energy method has been used to predict the impact force during the ice-structure collision. This study also employs two concepts for reference contact area and normalized stress in analysis procedure. The influences of factors, such as impact velocity, full penetration depth, structure shape and ice floe size, are investigated. Full penetration occurs, particularly at lower impact velocity when ice thickness increase. But "typical size" ice floe does not expected ever to achieve full penetration during the impact procedure. The structure shape is the dominant factor in ice impact force characteristic. The results for various ice-structure collision scenarios are analyzed.

Ice shapes accumulated on the aircraft surfaces are categorized into rime and glaze ice, which are highly dependent on various parameters such as ambient temperature, liquid water contents (LWC), mean volumetric droplet diameter and freestream velocity. In this study, quantitative analyses on the ice accretion have been attempted in a systematical manner and the key findings are as follows. First, the increase of freestream velocity can cause tremendous change in the ice accumulation such as the growth of ice accretion area, ice heading direction and maximum thickness of ice horn. Second, LWC is found to be linearly proportional to the ice accretion area. Third, the effects of ambient temperature on incoming water mass seem to be relatively small in comparison with LWC and freestream velocity. Finally, it was shown that MVD has only a little influence on ice shapes. However, it may increase the ice accretion area by increasing the droplet impacting range.

The shape and array of ice capsules are very important factors in ice thermal storage system because the heat transfer rate of the system strongly depends upon them. In this paper, a new type of ice capsule composed of bar and ring module is proposed to increase the efficiency of the ice thermal storage system. To investigate the heat transfer rate of the proposed ice capsule, numerical analysis of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is performed to compare the proposed bar and ring system with the conventional ice capsules. It is shown that the ice capsule composed of bar and ring has a higher heat transfer rate and a low outlet temperature than the conventional ice capsules for various packing ratios and entrance velocities. Furthermore, it is found that the optimal entrance velocity exists between 0.005 m/s and 0.007 m/s from the present numerical analysis.

As the LNG carrier operates in ice covered waters, it is key to ensure the overall safety, which is related to the coupling effect of ice-breaking process and internal liquid sloshing. This paper focuses on the sloshing simulation of the ice-breaking LNG carrier, and the numerical method is proposed using Circumferential Crack Method (CCM) and Volume of Vluid (VOF) with two main key factors (velocity νx and force Fx). The ship motion analysis is carried out by CCM when the ship navigates in the ice-covered waters with a constant propulsion power. The velocity νx is gained, which is the initial excitation condition for the calculation of internal sloshing force Fx. Then, the ship motion is modified based on iterative computations under the union action of ice-breaking force and liquid sloshing load. The sloshing simulation under the LNG tank is studied with the modified ship motion. Moreover, an ice-breaking LNG ship with three-leaf type tank is used for case study. The internal LNG sloshing is simulated with three different liquid heights, including free surface shape and sloshing pressure distribution at a given moment, pressure curves at monitoring points on the bulkhead. This present method is effective to solve the sloshing simulation during ice-breaking process, which could be a good reference for the design of the polar ice-breaking LNG carrier.

In this paper, EV (Electric Vehicle) and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle simulators are developed to compare maximum driving range of EV and ICE vehicle according to different driving patterns. And, simulations are performed for fourteen constant velocity cases (20, 30, 40, ${\ldots}$, 150 km/h) and four different driving cycles. From the simulation results of constant velocity, it is found that the decreasing rate of maximum driving range for EV is larger than the one for ICE as both the vehicle velocity and the driving power increase. It is because the battery efficiency of EV decreases as both the velocity and the driving power increase, whereas the engine and transmission efficiencies of ICE vehicle increase. From the results of four driving cycle simulation, the maximum driving range of EV is shown to decrease by 50% if the average driving power of driving cycle increases from 10 to 20kW. It is because the battery efficiency decreases as the driving power increases. In contrast, the maximum driving range of ICE vehicle also increases as the average driving power of driving cycle increases. It is because the engine and transmission efficiencies also increase as the driving power increases.
ICESat launched in Jan. 2003 has a capability to monitor polar regions with its inclination of 94 degree. ICESat carries GLAS (Geosciences Laser Altimetry System) to measure Earth's topography in unprecedented accuracy, and thus it can be applied for glacier variation due to recent climate changes. Here we present a new method to estimate velocity structure of Amery Ice-Shelf using ICESat altimtery data. ICESat data shows horizontal displacement of Amery Ice-Shelf, which can be directly used for velocity estimation. This method is expected to extend to other ice-shelves in Antarctica.
