  • The icebreaking research vessel ARAON conducted her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during the summer season of 2010. During this voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of the port side were measured using 14 strain gauges. The measurement was carried out during icebreaking while measuring the thickness of the ice every 10 m. The obtained strain data were converted to the equivalent stress values, and the effects of the ship speed and ice thickness on the ice load were investigated. As a result, it was found that a faster speed produced a larger stress, according to the variation in the peak values below an ice thickness condition of 1.5 m. Meanwhile, the effect of the ice thickness on the ice load was not clear.

  • Ice shapes accumulated on the aircraft surfaces are categorized into rime and glaze ice, which are highly dependent on various parameters such as ambient temperature, liquid water contents (LWC), mean volumetric droplet diameter and freestream velocity. In this study, quantitative analyses on the ice accretion have been attempted in a systematical manner and the key findings are as follows. First, the increase of freestream velocity can cause tremendous change in the ice accumulation such as the growth of ice accretion area, ice heading direction and maximum thickness of ice horn. Second, LWC is found to be linearly proportional to the ice accretion area. Third, the effects of ambient temperature on incoming water mass seem to be relatively small in comparison with LWC and freestream velocity. Finally, it was shown that MVD has only a little influence on ice shapes. However, it may increase the ice accretion area by increasing the droplet impacting range.

  • The icebreaking research vessel, ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Sea from 16th July to 12th August 2010. During the voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of port side were measured from 14 strain gauges. The measurements were also carried out in ice waters with various ice concentration ratio as well as the icebreaking performance tests. In this study, the ice loads measured during the 'general' operation in ice waters were analyzed. As a first step, the relationship between the location of strain gauges and the ice loads were investigated, and then the possibility for observation of higher ice loads was estimated based on the probability density function. The relationship between the ship speed and the ice load was also investigated. 718 peak stresses data higher than 20 MPa obtained from strain gauges array attached in longitudinally and vertically was analyzed. In general, the ice load increases as the ship speed increases in the low ship speed range, and ice load decreases as the ship speed is greater than a certain speed.

  • This study was designed to investigate development points for automatic ice maker which met consumer's demand. Basic data about using ices in Korean's dietary life, were collected from Seoul and Kyunggi-do residences and analyzed by SPSS program. The results were as follows; 93.7% of respondents had 3 major domestic brands' refrigerator and 41.4% of them had medium-large capacity(400-519L). 65% of respondents had a refrigerator that was purchased less than five years. 15.5% of respondents had one more refrigerator. Among of them, major refrigerator was located in kitchen(67.7%) and minor was in kitchen(29.8%) and in veranda or multi-purpose room(26.3%). 66.2% of respondents always prepared ices in ice container, and 85% of them used ice only in summer. Boiling water with barley or corn was used as drinking water (45.6%) and boiled or purified tap water was used to make ice (38.6%) commonly. In cooking, ice was used especially in cold soup with cucumber and seaweed(89.9%), ice-tea or ice-coffee(81%), and fruit punch(64%). The next commonly using ice was adding in alcoholic beverage such as whiskey(57.4%), in Koreans traditional drink(Misugaru) (45.2%) and juice. The purpose of using ice was to cool in soft drink (58.6%), to cool in cooking food(19.9%), to eat ice itself(14.0%), and to enjoy more fantastic taste and mood(3.8%). In whiskey, the purpose of using ices was to control alcoholic content (52.9%). There was no significant difference between sex in the purpose of using ice, but there was significant differences between age(p<0.05). Seasonal variations in using ice, there were significant differences according to sex, age, roles in family, amount of preparation of ice, socio-economic level and brand and capacity of refrigerator in respondent's home.

  • A hull form of Baltic ice class IA Aframax tanker has been developed taking into consideration of powering performance in brash ice channels based on IA class rules. Speed performance of the ship hull form in normal seagoing has been validated through model tests in a towing tank. The hull form design developed in this work has demonstrated good speed performance in normal seagoing although the ship design is entitled to ice class IA.

  • The fermentation characteristics of ice wines made from freeze-dried Muscat Bailey A grapes were determined. Muscat Bailey A grapes were concentrated to 34.8 and $40.8^{\circ}Bx$ by freeze drying and were then fermented. The content of reducing sugar was 0.3% in conventional wine after fermentation, but was 21.5 and 23.9% in ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$, respectively. The content of alcohol was 9.6% in conventional wine but was 10.3 and 10.6% in ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$, respectively. It was observed that the red and violet colors of ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$ became dominant compared to the controls. In sensory evaluation studies, ice wines at 34 and $40^{\circ}Bx$ showed higher intensities in color, flavor, and overall preference.

  • The interaction of ground ice features with underlying seabed is one of the major considerations in the design of Arctic pipeline systems. Regarding the development of offshore gas field near Sakhalin Island, which is an ice-infested area, in this paper an ice scour model to determine the burial depth of Arctic offshore pipeline is studied. Using a simplified ice-seabed interaction process, ice scour depth is easily estimated. This nonlinear numerical model can simulate the scouring process for various enviromental parameters such as ice mass, incoming velocity, soil strength. This study also deals with interaction forces during the scouring process in sloping seabed conditions and discusses the ice loads that are transmitted through the seabed soil.

  • Regrading the development of offshore natural gas field near Sakhalin Island which is an ice-infested area, this study aims to estimate the dynamic ice load for construction of offshore structures operating in this region. In this paper the design ice load and dynamic responses of a slender Arctic structure upon continuous ice movement are sutdied. Crushing agter a certain elastic deformation is assumed as a primary failure mechanism at the contact zone between semi-infinite level ice edge and the face of structure. Dynamic interaction forces are calculated using a modified Korzhavin's equation and a two-dimensional ice-structure interaction model is adopted. To verify the numerical model, dynamic analysis is performed for on of the Baltic Sea channel markers whose response patterns were presiously observed.

  • In the process of ice-slurry making, ice adhesion on cooling wall or in narrow flow Path disturbs continuous ice formation. In this study, the effect on the ice adhesion to cooling surface by some freezing experiments was investigated, quantitatively. Three types of solutions were frozen in various coating vessels with stirring. In the experiment, the ice adhesion between cooling wall and Ice-slurry was evaluated by measuring stirring power. From the result, the stirring power of slurry mixture in PTFE-coating vessel was smaller than those in PE-coating, PFA-coating and bare SUS vessel. Especially, in EG H PG 1.S/ HD 1.5 mass$\%$ solution, the stirring power in the PE-coating vessel was smaller than that in the PFA-coating or SUS vessel.
