  • The failure of distinguishing homographs in describing relations of individual authors and relations of authorship(i.e. distinction of persons with the same name or persons of the same literary author's name) will cause difficulties of retrieving exact information. It is because relations of automorphism cannot be formed between the two sets mentioned above. Therefore, it is ultimately necessary to set up the criteria or tools to distinguish homographs in order to retrieve more exact information. In the past, some efforts were made to develop authority data in order to solve the homograph problems by individual libraries, documents and portal sites in Korea. It is well understood that developing authority data by an individual institution was very difficult with no criteria or no rules to clarify the homograph problems at the national level. This study is to develop ways of recognizing individual names including subject words and proper nouns. The results of the study will present methods of distinguishing and describing homographs between individual author sets, and authorship sets particularly focused on the areas of arts and popular culture.

  • In Principle, the distriction should be understood between projections and forecasts. When the author or user of a projection is willing to describe it as indicating the most likely population at a give date, then he has made a forecast Population change since 1 960 has been reviewed briefly in order to forecast the population of Korea in the year 2,000 which is a leading factor in long term national development plan for which Korea Institute for Population and Health (KIPH) has been participated since 1983. The author of this paper introduced the population forecast prepared for the long term national development plan and an attempt of comparisons with other forecasts such as D.P. Smith's, T. Frejka's, Economic Planning Board's (EPB), UN's and S.B. Lee's was made. Those six forecasts of Korean future population in year 2,000 varried from 48.5 million to 50.0 million due to the base population and assumption of fertility and mortality however the range of total population size is not large enough. Taking four forecasts such as KIPH, EPB, UN, and Lee based on 1980 population census results and latest data of fertility and mortality, KIPH and UN forecast are close in total population size even though there was a slight difference in fertility and mortality assumptions. The smallest size of total population was shown by S.B. Lee (see Table 13) although the difference between KIPH and Lee was approximately one million which is two percent of total population in year 2,000. As a summary of conclusion the author pointed out that one can take anyone of forecasts prepared by different body because size and proportion wise of the Korean population until early I 990s can not be different much and new population projections must be provided by using 1985 population census data and other latest fertility and mortality information coflected by Korea Institute for Population and Health and Economic Planning Board in forth comming year.

  • This study explores how a teacher copes with anomalous situation in primary practical science lesson and what factors affect teacher's strategy to cope with anomalous situations. The method of auto-ethnography was used in order to capture the inner experience of the individual teacher. For this, one of the researchers participated in this study as the teacher participant. Two science lessons that the researcher taught as a teacher were observed by a co-author and video-recorded. However, only one lesson which the teacher experienced the anomalous situation was analyzed. After the lesson, self-interviews were conducted with the co-author. Also the researcher wrote four reflective journals about anomalous situations that she experienced. What has emerged in this study is that anomalous situations were experienced by the teacher while students were doing practical work and while students were presenting their results of practical work. As each anomalous situation was experienced in different contexts, the strategies that the teacher used were different and were affected not only by the personal epistemological belief but also by the socio-cultural context that the teacher was surrounded by. This study has implications to help teachers who have difficulties in coping with anomalous situations.

  • In order to obtain the basic data for diagnosis of occlusion the author investigated the occlusal sounds produced by mandibular closing movement from rest position to centric occlusion by using the Korotkoff sounds microphone electrodes and physiograph for Korean 20S without TMJ problems. And the author analyzed the correlation of the occlusal sounds with height, body weight, mandibular closing movement distance, maxillary sinus size and masseter muscle activities relating to the production of occlusal sounds. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The occlusal sounds prouduced by mandibular closing movements from rest position to centric occlusion were ranged from 3.08mV to 52.00mV, their maen value 19.07mV in right side, and ranged from 2.41mV to 18.33mV, their mean value 9.19mV in left side in group of Angel's class I occlusion subjects having right habitual side of mastication. 2. In general the occlusal sounds in the habitual side of mastication were greater than those in the opposite side. 3. The correlations of the occlusal sounds with height and maxillary sinus size were not significant. 4. The correaltions of the occlusal sounds with body weight, mandibular closing movement distance and masster muscle activities were significant.

  • This review summarises the classification, anatomy and embryogenesis of complex spinal cord lipomas, and describes in some detail the new technique of total lipoma resection and radical reconstruction of the affected neural placode. Its specific mission is to tackle two main issues surrounding the management of complex dysraphic lipomas : whether total resection confers better long term benefits than partial resection, and whether total resection does better than conservative treatment, i.e., no surgery, for asymptomatic lipomas. Accordingly, the 24 years progression-free survival data of the author and colleagues' series of over 350 cases of total resection are compared with historical data from multiple series (including our own) of partial resection, and total resection data specifically for asymptomatic lesions are compared with the two known series of non-surgical treatment of equivalent patients. These comparisons amply support the author's recommendation of total resection for most complex lipomas, with or without symptoms. The notable exception is the asymptomatic chaotic lipoma, whose peculiar anatomical relationship with the neural tissue defies even our aggressive surgical approach, and consequently projects worse results (admittedly of small number of cases) than for the other two lipoma subtypes of dorsal and transitional lesions. Prophylactic resection of asymptomatic chaotic lipomas is therefore not currently endorsed.

  • It is common that several kind of claims between the parties are arising in carrying out international construction works. Therefore, it is very important for them to settle the claims effectively in order to get expected profits and purposes in international construction works. In this article, the author have studied on the procedures and contents on the settlement of claims between the parties based on the FIDIC contracts for major works which are newly prepared in 1999 by FIDIC. Especially, the arbitration clause in the FIDIC contracts for major works attempts to deal with a number of complex contractual and legal matters, sometimes in a very harsh way, e.g. by cutting off a party's rights. It has never been an easy clause to understand or to observe. Nevertheless, the author hopes he has been able in this article to clarify for the reader some of the issues raised by it. I'd like to suggest that our overseas construction companies refer to the FIDIC contracts for major works(especially article 20 : claims, disputes and arbitration) directly or indirectly for their contract of international construction works with overseas employers.

  • Social scientists in North America, especially anthropologists, folklorists and linguists, who focus on the study language use and its connection to society, use a variety of labels to describe what they do. Among the best known are 'anthropological linguistics' , 'linguistic anthropology', and 'sociolinguistics'. All of these labels imply that their focus is on the study of language usage in society and culture for their teaching, research and publications. In this paper I am examining the intellectual issues and history that underlie the differences in the labels. The differences and similarities that characterize them are discussed. The author proposes 'linguistic anthropology' as the most useful disciplinary terminology if the study of language combined with culture is to be 'community-centric' and not only 'profession-centric' . He encourages a renewed focus on working with communities. Also, a need to find ways to engage Indigenous members of minority language communities more actively should be a primary goal in the process of 'academic' language work. This is important due to the loss rapid extinction of the many of the world's languages. The author points out that it does matter what we call the work we do, as a label may carry a message of meaning, intent and focus.

  • Surgical removal of impacted mesiodens can be performed easily when exact position of mesiodens is identified. This case report is argued about methodological approach of exact antero-posterior postioning of mesiodens using conventional cross-sectional occlusal film and periapical film. The author concludes, 1. Among various methods of positioning mesiodens, exact position of mesiodens can be determined with occlusal film and periapical film. 2. On operation, exact antero-posterior position of mesiodens can be determined with comparing occlusal images of adjacent teeth and anatomic structure to real ones. 3. It is important that exact removal course of mesiodens has to be determined in addition to exact determination of one's position, and that it has to be determined in regard to position, morphological basis, direction of impacted pattern of mesiodens and adjacent anatomic structure. 4. In 2 cases presented, both are mesiodens of inverted conical type, and impacted direction are class I and III respectively according to classification author suggested, and surgery can be perfomed with ease by different approach directions.

  • In order to elucidate the effects displayed by the plant growth regulators on the senecence of tobacco leaves, the author applied gibberellic acid, Kinetin, Indole-acetic acid, uracil, and malefic hydrazide to the excised leaves in concentration of 25mg/l of each regulators. And author obtained the results as following, 1. Parallel to the decreases of chlorophyll, the amounts of protein and RNA were decreased. 2. The supression of decrease of the amounts of RNA and protein was displayed by the plant growth regulators, G.A., I.A.A.. The decrease of them in M.A. treatments was more than in non-treatments. 3. The ratio changes of chlorophyll a/b and the changes of protein and RNA content seemed to be no relations.

  • Any organization's Six Sigma program may be at high risk without heeding the lessons learned from the past and that tries to operate without a robust business foundation. A foundation that preferably should consist of stepping-stones such as a 5-S house-keeping program, an effective Integrated Management System (IMS), which includes a strong focus on planning for quality to fully capture the Voice of the Customer (VOC), and an organization-wide training scheme, as well as a reliable Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) system. That's the best advise I can give to any organization that wishes to embark on a Six Sigma improvement program and hope to be successful. The paper will elaborate on the above issues and provide suggested solutions based on the review of published historical information and the experiences encountered over the last four decades by the author, as a quality practitioner and consultant, in industries that produced safety-critical product. This author maintains that few fundamentally new or useful things have been created in the field of Quality during the last couple of decades. Nevertheless, this paper deliberates on a number of relatively “newer” issues including the concept of “three types of customers”, the CTC, “Critical To Customer” term, the eight Quality Management Principles of the new ISO 9000 family, the growth of industry-specific standards, the adoption of Integrated Management Systems, the rebirth of AS2561 COQ standard, the spread of Six Sigma as well as related ASQ certification and the need for a robust business foundation to ensure Six Sigma survival.
