The Relation between Verbal Aggression by Parents and Children's Maladjusted Emotional Behavior (부모의 언어적 학대와 아동의 정서적 부적응행동과의 관계)

  • This study investigated the relation between verbal abuse by parents and children's maladjusted emotional behavior. The sampling consisted of 628 children in 16 classes out of every three elementary schools and one middle school. Instruments used for this study were the Verbal Abuse Measure, Parent-to-child violence items of the Conflict Tactics Scales, Emotional Maladjustment Behavior Scale, and Socioeconmic Status. Methods applied to data analysis were multiple regression, logistic regression and logistic curve graphic display. The major findings were ; (1) Of all subjects, almost 20% experienced at least one instance in which they were victims of verbal abuse during the year covered by this study. (2) As the amount of physical abuse by parents increased the verbal abuse by parents increased. The older children experienced more verbal abuse than the younger ones. (3) Verbal abuse by parents was more highly related to maladjusted emotional behavior of the children than physical abuse by parents. (4) Regardless of the physical violence by parents, verbal abuse by parents was associated with maladjusted emotional behavior of children. Children who were subjected to both verbal and physical abuse were more strongly related to withdrawal, hyperactivity, and obsessive-compulsions than children experienced either one or the other.

Evaluation of Thermal Hysteresis Activity of Ice-binding Proteins Using Ice-etching and Molecular Docking

  • Ice-binding proteins have an affinity for ice. They create a gap between the melting and freezing points by inhibiting the growth of ice, known as thermal hysteresis (TH). Interestingly, moderately active LeIBP and hyperactive FfIBP are almost identical in primary and tertiary structures, but differ in TH activity. The TH of FfIBP is tenfold higher than that of LeIBP, due to a subtle difference in their ice-binding motifs. To further evaluate the difference in TH, the interactions were investigated by ice-etching and molecular docking. Ice-etching showed that FfIBP binds to the primary and secondary prism, pyramidal, and basal planes; previously, LeIBP was found to bind to the basal and primary prism planes. Docking analysis using shape complementarity (Sc) showed that the hyperactive FfIBP had higher Sc values for all four ice planes than LeIBP, which is comparable with TH. Docking can be used to describe the hyperactivity of IBPs.

Genetic association tests when a nuisance parameter is not identifiable under no association

  • Some genetic association tests include an unidentifiable nuisance parameter under the null hypothesis of no association. When the mode of inheritance (MOI) is not specified in a case-control design, the Cochran-Armitage (CA) trend test contains an unidentifiable nuisance parameter. The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) in a family-based association study that includes the unaffected also contains an unidentifiable nuisance parameter. The hypothesis tests that include an unidentifiable nuisance parameter are typically performed by taking a supremum of the CA tests or TDT over reasonable values of the parameter. The p-values of the supremum test statistics cannot be obtained by a normal or chi-square distribution. A common method is to use a Davies's upper bound of the p-value instead of an exact asymptotic p-value. In this paper, we provide a unified sine-cosine process expression of the CA trend test that does not specify the MOI and the TDT that includes the unaffected. We also present a closed form expression of the exact asymptotic formulas to calculate the p-values of the supremum tests when the score function can be written as a linear form in an unidentifiable parameter. We illustrate how to use the derived formulas using a pharmacogenetics case-control dataset and an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder family-based example.

  • Methylphenidate is a widely used stimulant for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition to core symptoms of attention and behavioral symptoms, methylphenidate is even effective for executive functions. However, abuse and misuse of stimulants, including methylphenidate, for the purpose of cognitive enhancement is an issue of concern worldwide. Some prejudices and misunderstandings against methylphenidate are popular ; however, little attention has been given to the neuropsychiatric evidence of methylphenidate for enhancement of cognitive function among healthy populations. In this article, our aim was to conduct a review of previous studies investigating the effect of methylphenidate in healthy populations. Findings from several recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of methylphenidate for enhancement of cognitive function in healthy populations. The mechanisms of cognitive enhancement are thought to be associated with motivation and the reward circuit in the brain. However, when considering the risk to benefit, an official discussion of the use of methylphenidate among healthy members of the population would be premature. Instead, investigation of epidemiological studies of the prevalence of misuse of stimulants among healthy members of the population, particularly adolescents and college students, is needed. In addition, based on achievements reported in previous studies, investigation of the effect of an approach using non-pharmacological enhancing motivation, which will in turn result in increased cognitive function would be helpful.

A Study on the mother's attribution and behavioral reaction to behavior problem of child. (아동의 문제행동에 대한 어머니의 귀인과 행동반응의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mother's perception on the concrete pattern of such behavior problems as noncompliance, jealousy, dependency, hyperactivity and stealing, by analyzing the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. This study was carried out by using 515 questionnaires answered by 1000 mothers of children of 7 kindergartens in Ulsan and Taegu, using Melissa Sweitzer's method (1986). The data was subjected to t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient. T-test was applied to test the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and Person's correlation coefficient was estimated to test the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. The result of this study is sumarized as follows : 1. It was shown that the mother's attribution to the behavior problem of the child is less serious when her child showed the behavior problem than when another child dose the problem while her attribution has an affective reaction to the behavior problem of the child. 2. The relationship between the mother's attribution and behavior reaction to the behavior problem of the child appeared variously in accordance with the attribution factor and behavior problem. Then the mother showed more attribution to stability while frequently ignoring the child.

Differences of Interactive Peer Play According to the Problem Behaviors Types (아동의 문제행동 유형에 따른 또래 놀이행동)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in interactive peer play according to the type of problem behavior. The subjects were 112(67 boys, 45 girls) S-year-old children at 25 daycare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongsang areas. Instruments included the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire(PBQ; Behar & Stringfield, 1974) and the Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale(PIPPS) in both the teacher version(Choi & Shin, 2008) and the parent version(Fantuzzo, Mendez, & Tighe, 1998). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using the SPSS 18.0 software program. The results showed that the clusters of problem behaviors on the PBQ could be grouped into four categories; 'hostility-aggressiveness', 'hyperactivity- distractibility', 'anxiety-fear', and 'combined'. In addition, group differences among the problem behaviors were significantly found in 'play disruption' and 'play disconnection' but not in 'play interaction' of the PIPPS on teachers' and parents' ratings. Specifically, group differences were not found in the parental reports, while significant group differences were noted in the 'play disconnection on PIPPS component of the teachers' reports.

The Relationship between Parent's and Offspring's Personality and Offspring's Psychological Adaptation (부모의 성격 및 자녀의 성격과 자녀의 심리적 적응 간의 관계)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between personality of parent and offspring, and offspring's psychological adaptation. Methods: We examined temperament and character of 65 parents and their offspring (measured using the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory and Temperament and Character Inventory) and offspring's internalizing (anxiety, depression) and externalizing (delinquency, hyperactivity) problems. Results: The internalizing problems of offspring were positively associated with harm avoidance (HA) of offspring and parent, and negatively associated with self-directedness (SD) of offspring and parent. The externalizing problems of offspring were positively associated with novelty seeking of offspring, and were predicted by SD of parent. The interaction between parent's HA and offspring's HA predicted higher levels of anxiety of offspring. Conclusion: The association between the offspring's personality and internalizing and externalizing problems can depend on the personality of the parent.

The Effects of Social Skills Training Combined with Social Stories and Movement Activities on Children with ADHD (사회상황이야기와 동작활동을 결합한 사회기술훈련이 ADHD 아동에게 미치는 효과)

  • This study examined the effects of social skills training combined with social stories and movement activities designed to change the social behaviors of children with ADHD. Six first-grade children with ADHD participated in the training program, which was composed of 15 sessions over 2 months. Our results indicated that:(1) Children's problematic behaviors were reduced after the training. Anxiety was reduced by a statistically significant level. Depression, delinquency, and hyperactivity were also reduced, but these did not reach a statistically significant level. (2) Children's social skills were improved after the training. Self-assertion and self-control were increased by a statistically significant level. Cooperation was also improved, but it did not reach a statistically significant level. (3) Children's social behaviors became more prosocial after participation in the training program. Children were also found to be able to express positive feeling more often, recognize social rules, and explain their ideas regarding friendship.

  • In the literatual studies on the causes and treatments of the melasma, the results were as follows. 1. Melasma is the blackish patch on the face, is belong to the cartegory of the 'Myunjin(面塵)', 'Myunganzung(면간증)', 'Jakban(雀斑)' etc. in Oriental medicine 2. Melasma is deeply associated with Yangming channel in Meridian, with the spleen, stomach, heart and kidney in Viscera. 3. The pathogenic factors of Melasma is divided five parts. One is insufficient of Yangming's energy in Neijing(內經). Two is incoordination between vital energy and blood caused by wind-evil and phlegm-retention syndrome. Three is anxiety impairing the spleen. Four is kidney-asthenia and fire-hyperactivity. Five is heat-evil. 4. In the treatments of Melasma, Sthenia-syndrome was used cooling blood and activating blood circulation, or dispelling wind-evil and promoting meridian, or expelling fire-evil and removing toxic material etc. Asthenia-syndrome was used invigorating the liver and kidney, or nourishing yin and keeping fire downwards etc. 5. Melasma is concerned with sun-light, is mostly seen in female. 6. In the prescription of Melasma, it was used Jujesamultang(酒製四物湯加減), Okyong -san(玉容散), Chunghwasungitang(沖和順氣湯), Okyongseosisan(玉容西施散), Yukmiji-hwanghwan(六味地黃丸) etc.

Influence of Education in Environment on Maladjusted Behavior Changes among Children with ADHD (환경 안에서의 교육이 주의력 결핍 과잉 행동 장애(ADHD) 아동의 부적응 행동 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated ADHD prevalence among the first to sixth graders in ordinary classes of H elementary school located in an area of special rural conditions and selected 4 sixth graders who received high scores in a self-diagnostic test on attention deficit and over 17 points from teachers in an ARS-IV test with a view to verifying the effects of the education in environment on the improvement of maladjusted behaviors among ADHD children when the education program for improvement of maladjusted behaviors is applied to the environment. The program was applied from March to mid-July for about 4.5 months in 13 periods. The program applied consisted of activities of experiencing the nature. Behavior changes of targets during the course of the program were recorded in the frequency of ADHD target behaviors card and the observation log to describe the results, which underwent a comparative analysis through pre-and post-tests of ADDES-SV and to graph the changes in maladjusted behaviors of target children. To sum up, the education in environment resulted in positive effects on the changes of maladjusted behaviors among ADHD children by reducing attention deficit impulsive behaviors and hyperactivity.
