A new type of uranium occurrence in Korea was identified in pegmatitic and hydrothermally altered granite in the Daejeon area. The U-bearing parts typically include muscovite, pink-feldspar and sericite as alteration minerals. In this study, the geochemical characteristics and alteration age of the granitic rocks were examined to provide evidence for hydrothermally-enriched uranium. The K-Ar ages of muscovite coexisting with U-bearing minerals were determined as 123 and 128 Ma. The U-bearing rocks have relatively low ($CaO+Na_2O$), high $K_2O$ contents, and high alteration index values by major element geochemistry. The trace element geochemistry shows that the uraniferous rocks have significantly low Th/U ratios and strongly differentiated features. The rare earth element patterns indicate that the uraniferous rocks have a low total REE and LREE contents with depletion of Eu. Considering the geochemical variation of the granitic rock major, trace and rare earth elements, it can be concluded that uranium enrichment in pegmatites and altered granite should be genetically related to post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration of K-metasomatism after emplacement of the two-mica granite. This is the first report for geochemical characteristics of Mesozoic granite-related U-occurrences in South Korea. This study will help further research for uranium deposits with similarities in geological setting, mineralogy and age data between South China and Korea, and can also be expected to help solve the source problems related to high uranium concentrations in some groundwater occurring in the granitic terrane.

Steam assisted gravity drainage(SAGD) is a process that drills well in the underground oil sands layer, injects hightemperature steam, lowers the viscosity of buried bitumen, and recovers it to the ground. Recently, direct contact steam generator(DCSG) is being developed to maximize steam efficiency for SAGD process. The DCSG requires high technology to achieve pressurized combustion and steam generation in accordance with underground pressurized conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a combustion technology that can control the heat load and exhaust gas composition. In this study, process analysis of high-pressurized DCSG was conducted to apply oxygen enrichment technology in which nitrogen of the air was partially removed for increasing steam production and reducing fuel consumption. As the process analysis conditions, methane as the fuel and normal air or oxygen enriched air as the oxidizing agent were applied to high-pressurized DCSG process model. A simple combustion reaction program was used to calculate the property variations for combustion temperature, steam ratio and residual heat in exhaust gas. As a major results, the steam production efficiency of DCSG using the pure oxygen was about 6% higher than that of the normal air due to the reducing nitrogen in the air. The results of this study will be used as operating data to test the demonstration device.

In this study, silicon sludge from semiconductor dicing process is recycled to fabricate silica nanoparticles, which are applied as dispersing materials for electro-responsive (ER) smart fluid. In specific, metal impurities are removed from silicon sludge by acid washing to obtain the high-purity silicon powder. And then, silica nanoparticles are synthesized by facile hydrothermal method employing the silicon powder as reactant material. To control the size of silica nanoparticles, the reaction time of hydrothermal method is varied as 8, 15, 20, and 30 hours are applied to control the size of silica nanoparticles. Sizes of silica nanoparticles are increased proportionally to the reaction time owing to the increased numbers of hydrolysis and condensation reactions. As-synthesized silica nanoparticles are prepared as electro-responsive smart fluids by dispersing into silicon oil. Silica nanoparticles synthesized by 30 hours of hydrothermal reaction (SiO2-H30) exhibit the highest shear stress of 21.4 Pa under an applied electric field strength of 3.0kV mm-1. Such enhancement in ER performance of SiO2-H30 among various silica nanoparticles are attribute to the reinforcing effect originated from the mixed particle size, which allowing the formation of rigid chain-like structures. Accordingly, this study successfully propose a recycling method of silicon sludge to synthesize silica nanoparticles and their derived ER fluids, which may suggest new possibility to ESG management emphasizing the eco-friendliness.
K-Ar ages were determined on gangue and wall rock alteration minerals from twenty metallic mineral deposits in the Gyeonggi Massif. Beryl deposits give the age of 185 Ma, whereas tungsten - molybdenum deposits reveal two different age groups such as 172~156 Ma and 91~86Ma. Lead - zinc deposits and gold - silver deposits yield the ages of 160 Ma and 71~197 Ma, respectively. Mineralization ages for each genetic type of deposits in the Gyeonggi Massif can be summarized as follows; pegmatite deposits, 185 Ma; skarn deposits, 156~160 Ma; hydrothermal deposits, 71~197 Ma. Present results together with data previously reported reveal that rare earths, tungsten-molybdenum, base and precious metal deposits in the Gyeonggi Massif were formed in Jurassic and Cretaceous time with a genetic relationship to the Daebo and Bulguksa felsic igneous activity.

Epithermal deposits are an important class of hydrothermal deposits, that have recently seen an surge of exploration and research, principally as significant resources of gold and silver. Epithermal deposits form at shallow depths (surface to 1-2km) and temperatures less than 30$0^{\circ}C$ (Hayba et al., 1985), and encompass a variety of low-sulfidation (near-neutral pH, reduced fluid; LS) and high-sulfidation (acidic and oxidized fluid; HS) deposits (Sillitoe, 1993; White and Hedenquist, 1995). The occurrence and mineralogical characteristics of asbestos in dolostone at Ungdo, Seosan were investigated by analyses of PLM, XRD, and SEM/EDS. Representative outcrops of dolostone at Ungdo were examined and four dolostone samples were collected according the occurrence type to identify the shape of asbestos in dolostone samples. The host rock of dolostone had been produced from the hydrothermal alteration and/or thermal metamorphism of which main source was assumed as the acidic granite. Tremolites were observed near the cracks or fractures of the dolostone as tamping or gob types. From the mineralogical analyses, main minerals of dolostone were dolomite with calcite, quartz, talc, amphibole, and pyroxene. From SEM/EDS analyses, tremolite-actinolite asbestoses were observed in dolostone and their shapes were prismatic and fibrous (less than $1{\mu}m$ in width). Non-asbestos prismatic forms were also found and they would transfer to asbestos particles resulting from the cleavage and fracture of the prismatic particles. Overall results suggest that asbestoses in Ungdo dolosotnes were mainly tremolite-actinolite and they were originated from the hydrothermal alteration of Ca-Mg rich dolostone.

This is a study on the mineral compositions, SK numbers of refractoriness and the genesis of the clay mineral deposits in Cheonnam Province and Handong area. 1. Jindo kaolin deposits: Chief clay minerals of the deposits are kaolinite, quartz and alunite. The SK number of the ore is from $34^+$(the highest) to 27(the lowest). On the genesis of the deposits some geologists believe that the deposits were formed by the alteration of the siliceous tuff. But the deposits seems to be formed by the hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolite lava beds. This area is formed by alternative beds of tuff; and kaoline deposits. 2. Hadong area: Chief mineralogy of Hadong kaolin area is $10{\AA}$ halloysite and kaolinite. The SK number of some of the ore is up to $36^+$. The theoretic SK number of kaolinitic composition is 35. So one of the highest alumina minerals of gibbsite is formed in the ores of $36^+$ SK numbers. 3. Hampyong kaolin deposits: Most of kaolin has black color. The chief minerals are kaolinite, quartz and muscovite. Some of the kaoline contains rutile crystals. SK number ranges from 30 to 17. The kaolin deposit is formed by the transported sedimentation in lower part of the seashore. 4. Jangsan kaoline deposits: Chief minerals of the kaolin is kaolinite, quartz and muscovite. Some kaoline contains small crystals of pyrite. This area consists almost of the tuffs. Kaolin deposits also would be formed by the alteration of the tuffs. 5. Nohwado pyrophyllite deposits: Quartz and pyrophyllite are chief minerals. SK number of the ore ranges from 32 to 30. The pyrophyllite deposits would be formed by the hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolitic lava beds. This area consists of alterative beds of tuffs and rhyolitic lavas. 6. Songsuk pyrophyllite deposits: Chief minerals are quartz, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and iron oxides. In the pyrophyllite deposits egg-like inclusions of diaspore and kaolinite in composition. This area almost consists of tuffs. Several faults are developed and along the fault the tuff would begin to alter to pyrophyllite and some parts to diaspore and kaolinite nodules by the acts of hydrothermal solution.
In the high-Ca limestone zone of the Pungchon Formation of the Lower Chosun Supergroup, cryptocrystalline alterations with reddish brown color occur as fissure-fillings or coatings, which was originated from the upper formation, i. e., the Hwajeol Formation. The precipitates result in degradation and contamination of the high-Ca limestone ore in grade and quality, showing characteristic occurrence and mineral composition typical of suggesting a supergene origin. Chalcedonic quartz, kaolinite, illite, goethite and hematite are constituting a characteristic authigenic mineral assemblage and, in places, smectite is less commonly included in the weathering product. In addition to these authigenic phases, some detrital minerals such as mica and orthoclase constituting relatively coarser grains are also rarely present in the supergene alterations. A rather complex clay facies consisting of kaolinite, illite and smectite in the alterations seems to correspond to the typical clay composition of the reported residual pedogenic soils by limestone weathering. The cryptocrystalline weathering product is partly altered to stilbite, a characteristic hydrothermal zeolite, in places, by the hydrothermal contact of late stage. The time of formation and infiltration of the supergene alterations seems to correspond to the stage just after the epithermal alteration of the Pungchon Limestone, i. e., an early Jurassic age. The supergene alteration, which may imply the stage of uplifting, weathering and erosion of the Chosun Supergroup, appears to have undergone at an oxygen-rich environment in descending water of meteoric origin by means of a chemical leaching and diffusion.
This paper presents the explorations of hydrothermal vents located in the Marina Arc and Back Arc Basin using the deep-sea ROV Hemire. These explorations were conducted by KRISO and KIOST to demonstrate the capability of Hemire in various applications for deep-sea scientific research. The missions included the following: (1) to search the reported vents, (2) conduct visual inspections, (3) deploy/recover a sediment trap and bait traps, (4) sample sediment/water/rock, (5) measure the magnetic field at the vent site, and (6) acquire a detailed map using multi-beam sonar near the bottom. We installed three HD cameras for precise visual inspection, a high-temperature thermometer, a three-component magnetometer, and a multi-beam sonar to acquire details of the bottom contour or identify vents in the survey area. The explorations were performed in an expedition from March 23 to April 5, 2016, and the missions were successfully completed. This paper discusses the operational process, navigation, and control of Hemire, as well as the exploration results.
World-class magnesite deposits are developed in the Dashiqiao mineralized district of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt in China. This belt extends to the northern side of the Korean Peninsula and hosts major magnesite deposits in the Dancheon region of North Korea. Magnesite ores from the Pailou deposits in the Dashiqiao district is classified into pure magnetite, chlorite-magnetite, chlorite-talc-magnetite, and dolomite groups depending on the constituent minerals. According to the result of petrographic study, magnesite was formed by the alteration of dolomite, and, talc, chlorite, and apatite were produced as late-stage alteration minerals that replaced the magnesite. Fluid inclusions observed in magnesite are a liquid-type inclusion, with a homogenization temperature of 121-250 ℃ and a salinity of 1.7-22.4 wt% NaCl equiv. The chlorite geothermometer, indicating the temperature of hydrothermal alteration, is 137~293 ℃, slightly higher than the homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions, and the pressure is calculated to be less than 3.2 kb. For magnesite mineralization in the study area, the initially formed-dolomite was subjected to replacement by Mg-rich fluid to form a magnesite ore body, and then it was enriched through regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration. It seems that altered minerals such as talc were crystallized by Si and Al-rich late-stage hydrothermal fluids. These results are similar to the genetic environments of the Daeheung deposit, a representative magnesite deposit in North Korea, and it is believed that the two deposits went through a similar geological and ore genetic process of magnesite mineralization.
