In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

Hydrostatic Bearings have been applied to ultra high precision machine tools and precision instruments, because of their low friction characteristic, high load carrying capacity and high moving accuracy at all range of speed. In regard to realizing the Hydrostatic Bearing, various restrictors such as capillary, orifice, diaphram valve, spool valve, and etc can be used. However, their stiffness and flexibility are not sufficient in practical use for ultra precision machine tool elements. In this study dynamic equations were derived and the dynamic characteristics were simulated for both orifice and flow control servo valve. Simulation was carried out on the condition that static and sinusoidal dynamic loads were applied to the table of CNC jig Boring machine. The simulation results indicate the improvement of the performance of the Bearing system when flow control servo valve has been used as restrictor of Hydrostatic Bearing.

For improving the motion accuracy of hydrostatic tables, a corrective machining algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm consists of three main processes. The reverse analysis is performed firstly to estimate the rail profile from the measured linear and angular motion error, in the algorithm. For the next step, the corrective machining information is obtained based upon the estimated rail pronto. Finally, the motion errors on the correctively machined rail are analyzed by using the motion error analysis method. These processes are iterated until the analyzed motion errors are satisfactory within the target accuracy. In order to verify the validity of the algorithm theoretically, the motion errors calculated by the estimated rail after the corrective machining process, are compared with those by the true rail which is previously assumed as the initially measured value. The motion errors calculated using the estimated rail show good agreement with the assumed values, and it is shown that the algorithm is effective in acquiring the corrective machining information to improve the accuracy of hydrostatic tables.

An ultraprecision multi-axis machine tool has been designed and developed in our laboratory. The machine tool has four moving axes which are composed of three linear axes and one rotational axis. It has a gantry type structure and the Z-axis is on the X-axis and the C-axis, on which a workpiece is located, is inside the Y-axis. This paper shows control performance improving method and procedure for the ultra-precision positioning control of a hydrostatic bearing guided linear axis. Through improvements of electrical and mechanical components for the control system such as control electronics and oil pumping systems, the control disturbing noise is decreased. Also by the frequency domain analysis of control system those problem-making system components are identified and modified with analytical methods. The controller is analyzed and designed from frequency domain data and system information. In the experimental control results the nanometer order control result is successfully presented.

Measurement of five DOF motion errors in a ultra precision feed table was attempted in this study. Yaw and pitch error were measured by using a laser interferometer and roll error was measured by using the reversal method. Linear motion errors in the vertical and horizontal directions were measured by using the sequential two point method. In this case, influence of angular motion errors was compensated by using the previously measured ones by the laser interferometer and the reversal method. The capacitive type sensors and an optical straight edge were used in the reversal method and the sequential two point method. Influence of thermal deformation on sensor jig was investgated and minimized by the periodic measurement according to the variation of room temperature. Deviation of gain between sensors was also compensated using the step response data. 5 DOF motion errors of a hydrostatic table driven by the linear motor werer tested using the measurement method. In the horizontal direction, measuring accuracies for the linear and angular motion were within ${\pm}0.02\;{\mu}m$ and ${\pm}0.04$ arcsec, respectively. In the vertical direction, they were within ${\pm}0.02{\mu}m$ and ${\pm}0.05$ arcsec. From these results, it was found that the introduced measurement method was very effective to measure 5 DOF motion errors of the ultra precision feed tables.
Grouting for soil improvement has generally been applied to the depth over water table. Recently, it is needed to develop the grouting technique for soils under greater static water pressure or greater overburden pressure in constructions such as deep excavation or harbour deepening. In this study, a laboratory apparatus was developed to control the injection pressure, load pressure, and hydrostatic pressure. A series of experiments were performed with various degrees of hydrostatic pressure using the developed equipment. As a result, injected volume increase as injection pressure increase, while the volume significantly decreased under hydrostatic pressure. Larger volume of grout bulb was shown in soils with larger granular and pore size based on the comparison result of volume changes with respect to the amount of grouting injection.

In the case of direct connecting the nut of ballscrew to guide table, machining error and misalignment of ballscrew largely affect to the motional accuracy of guideway. For decreasing these influences, two type of floating couplings: leaf spring type and hybrid type which releases the table from nut of ballscrew except feed and rotational direction is proposed in this study. In order to verify practical availability of the proposed floating couplings, motional accuracy, dynamic characteristics and micro step response of hydrostatic guideway, mounted with each type of couplings are tested. The conventional fixed type coupling is also tested as the reference in characteristics. From the results of experiments, it is proved that the hybrid type coupling is superior to other couplings and is available to high precision feeding system with ballscrew.

Wind power, which is one of the promising renewable energies, has shown the high growth rate of 35 % of the annual average in the recent 5 years and also windmill related equipment market has been fast-growing. Yaw & Pitch bearing are the key parts of windmill and are machined by huge vertical lathe which is monopolized by the advanced countries. The purpose of this study is to develop the multi-tasking vertical lathe for 5 MW grade windmill bearings, which might be mass produced 3 or 5 years later. In this study, the structure of the crossrail and rotary table, which are the key units of the huge multi-tasking vertical lathe, were optimized through the finite element analysis. Also the basic performance of the rotary table has been evaluated.

This paper presents the motion accuracy simulation considering loads such as workpiece weight, cutting force, cogging force of a linear motor, and force caused by misalignment and runout error of a ballscrew in linear motion units. The transfer function method is basically utilized to estimate 5-DOF motion errors, together with the equilibrium equations of force and moment on the table. The transfer function method is modified in order to consider clearance changed according to the loads in the double sided hydrostatic/aerostatic bearings. Then, the analytic model for predicting the 5-DOF motion errors is proposed with the modified transfer function method. Motion errors were simulated under different loading conditions in the linear motion units using hydrostatic, aerostatic, and linear motion bearings, respectively. And the proposed analytic model was verified by comparing the estimated and measured motion errors.
