수소 버스 용기용 수소 투과량 측정 시스템의 신뢰성 평가 연구 (Reliability Evaluation Study of a Hydrogen Permeation Measurement System for 175 L Hydrogen Bus Vessels)

  • This paper provides an analysis of the experimental procedures and results to ensure the reliability of the system manufactured for testing the hydrogen permeability of a 175 L compressed hydrogen container for a hydrogen bus. Based on the hydrogen permeability standard of 6 cc/(h·L), it was injected into the permeability test chamber at 10% intervals, and the permeated hydrogen concentration according to the injected amount was measured and compared with the actual amount of hydrogen permeated. As a result of the experiment, the measured value represented 96.34% of the actual permeation amount, which can be used as basic data for the hydrogen bus vessel permeability test system being built in Korea.

  • Hydrogen evolution on a steel surface and subsequent hydrogen diffusion into the steel matrix are evaluated using an electrochemical permeation test with no applied cathodic current on the hydrogen charging side. In particular, cyclic operation in the permeation test is also conducted to clarify the corrosion-induced hydrogen evolution behavior. In contrast to the conventional perception that the cathodic reduction reaction on the steel in neutral aqueous environments is an oxygen reduction reaction, this study demonstrates that atomic hydrogen may be generated on the steel surface by the corrosion reaction, even in a neutral environment. Although a much lower permeation current density and significant slower diffusion kinetics of hydrogen are observed compared to the results measured in acidic environments, they contribute to the increase in the embrittlement index. This study suggests that the research on hydrogen embrittlement in ultra-strong steels should be approached from the viewpoint of corrosion reactions on the steel surface and subsequent hydrogen evolution/diffusion behavior.

SAFETY STUDIES ON HYDROGEN PRODUCTION SYSTEM WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE GAS-COOLED REACTOR

  • A primary-pipe rupture accident is one of the design-basis accidents of a High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR). When the primary-pipe rupture accident occurs, air is expected to enter the reactor core from the breach and oxidize in-core graphite structures. This paper describes an experiment and analysis of the air ingress phenomena and the method fur the prevention of air ingress into the reactor during the primary-pipe rupture accident. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental ones regarding the density of the gas mixture, the concentration of each gas species produced by the graphite oxidation reaction and the onset time of the natural circulation of air. A hydrogen production system connected to the High-Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) Is being designed to be able to produce hydrogen by themo-chemical iodine-Sulfur process, using a nuclear heat of 10 MW supplied by the HTTR. The HTTR hydrogen production system is first connected to a nuclear reactor in the world; hence a permeation test of hydrogen isotopes through heat exchanger is carried out to obtain detailed data for safety review and development of analytical codes. This paper also describes an overview of the hydrogen permeation test and permeability of hydrogen and deuterium of Hastelloy XR.

The Relationship Between Hydrogen Trapping Behavior and SSCC Suceptibility of API X60/65 Grade Steels

  • It is well known that SSCC (sulfide stress corrosion cracking) is caused by drastic ingression of hydrogen during the service and accumulation of hydrogen near the potential crack initiation site in the material. It is important to characterize the hydrogen trapping behavior to evaluate the service performance of the high strength pipeline steels. In this study. the relationship between the hydrogen trapping behavior and SSCC susceptibility is evaluated in terms of alloy composition, microstructure and carbide behavior. The hydrogen trapping behavior was measured by electrochemical hydrogen permeation test cell (Devanathan cell). The SSCC susceptibility is evaluated by constant extension rate test and constant strain lest method. The hydrogen trapping behavior is affected greatly by microstructure and nature of carbide particles. The fine TiC, and NbC in the matrix of ferritic structure acts as strong irreversible trap sites whereas the bainitic structure acts as reversible trap site. The SSCC susceptibility is closely related to not only the hydrogen trapping behavior but also the loading condition. As the activity of reversible trap site increases, SSCC susceptibility decreases under static loading condition below yield strength, whereas SSCC susceptibility increases under dynamic loading condition or above yield strength. As the activity of irreversible trap site increases. SSCC susceptibility increases regardless of loading condition. It is cased by the mixed effect of dislocation on hydrogen diffusion and trapping behavior.

Pd 코팅된 $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막의 수소투과 특성 (The Characteristics of Hydrogen Permeation through Pd-coated $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ Alloy Membranes)

  • 니오븀 금속을 기반으로 하는 $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막의 수소 투과 특성 및 화학적 안정성에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 직경 10 mm, 두께 0.5 mm의 $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막을 제작하였으며, 2가지 조성($H_2$ 100%, $H_2$ 60% + $CO_2$ 40%)의 공급가스를 $450^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 투과시킬 때 압력에 따른 수소 투과 특성에 관한 실험을 진행하였다. 본 실험에서의 최대 수소 투과량은 순수한 수소를 투과시킬 경우 절대압력 3 bar에서 $5.58mL/min/cm^2$로 나타났다. 또한 공급가스 조성에 따른 각각의 경우 모두 Sievert's law에 잘 부합하였으며, 이산화탄소와의 혼합가스 사용시, 투과량은 수소 분압 감소에 비례하여 감소하였다. 투과 실험 후 XRD 분석을 통하여 $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막의 이산화탄소에 대한 화학적 안정성에 대한 실험을 수행하였다.

수소 정제용 팔라듐 합금 분리막 연구 (A Study on the Palladium Alloy Membrane for Hydrogen Separation)

  • This study presented the effect of membrane thickness on hydrogen permeability. Microvoids on the surface of the membrane should not exist for the exact values of hydrogen permeability. Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membranes were fabricated by Ni powder sintering, substrate plasma pretreatment, sputtering and Cu reflow process. And this leaded to void-free surface and dense film of Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membrane. Hydrogen permeation test showed that hydrogen permeability increased from 2.7 to $15.2ml/cm^2{\cdot}min{\cdot}atm^{0.5}$ as membrane thickness decreased from 12 to $4{\mu}m$. This represented the similar trend as a hydrogen permeability of pure palladium membrane based on solution-diffusion mechanism.

  • 팔라듐이 코팅된 $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막을 통해 수소 투과시 혼합가스의 영향에 대해 알아보았다. 순수 수소, 수소, 이산화탄소 및 일산화탄소의 혼합가스를 공급가스로 주입할 때, $450^{\circ}C$, 1-3 bar의 압력에서 팔라듐이 코팅된 $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막의 수소 투과 실험을 수행하였다. 수소만을 공급한 투과 실험에서 팔라듐 코팅된 $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막(두께: 0.5 mm)의 수소 투과량은 3 bar, $450^{\circ}C$ 조건에서 $5.36mL/min/cm^2$였다. 또한 수소/이산화탄소, 수소/일산화탄소 및 수소/이산화탄소/일산화탄소를 공급한 투과실험에서 $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막의 수소 투과량은 각각 4.46, 5.20, $3.91mL/min/cm^2$였다. 따라서, 수소/이산화탄소, 수소/일산화탄소 및 수소/이산화탄소/일산화탄소 혼합가스를 각각 공급할 때 투과량은 온도와 압력에 상관없이 수소 분압 감소만큼 감소하였고 모든 경우 Sievert 법칙을 잘 만족시켰다. 투과 후 분리막의 XRD 결과로부터 $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ 합금 분리막은 여러 혼합가스에 대해 안정성과 내구성이 우수하다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Effect of Heat Treatment Conditions on Corrosion and Hydrogen Diffusion Behaviors of Ultra-Strong Steel Used for Automotive Applications

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of conditions for quenching and/or tempering on the corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behavior of ultra-strong automotive steel in terms of the localized plastic strain related to the dislocation density, and the precipitation of iron carbide. In this study, a range of analytical and experimental methods were deployed, such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy, electron back scatter diffraction, electrochemical permeation technique, slow-strain rate test (SSRT), and electrochemical polarization test. The results showed that the hydrogen diffusion parameters involving the diffusion kinetics and hydrogen solubility, obtained from the permeation experiment, could not be directly indicative of the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) occurring under the condition with low hydrogen concentration. The SSRT results showed that the partitioning process, leading to decrease in localized plastic strain and dislocation density in the sample, results in a high resistance to HE-induced by aqueous corrosion. Conversely, coarse iron carbide, precipitated during heat treatment, weakened the long-term corrosion resistance. This can also be a controlling factor for the development of ultra-strong steel with superior corrosion and HE resistance.

수성 가스 전이반응에서 $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ 합금 분리막의 수소분리 (Hydrogen separation of $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ Alloy Membrane in Water-gas shift Reaction)

  • 팔라듐이 코팅된 $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ 합금 분리막을 통해 sweep 가스를 사용하지 않고 수소 투과 시 혼합가스의 영향에 대해 알아보았다. 분리막은 $400^{\circ}C$에서 sweep 가스를 사용하지 않고 순수 수소, 수소/이산화탄소, 수소/일산화탄소의 혼합가스를 1.5~8.0 bar의 압력으로 실험하였다. Sweep 가스를 사용하지 않고 수소만을 공급한 투과 실험에서 팔라듐 코팅된 $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ 합금 분리막(두께 : 0.5 mm)의 수소 투과량은 $40.7mL/min/cm^2$였다. 또한 수소/이산화탄소를 공급한 투과실험에서 $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ 합금 분리막의 수소 투과량은 $21.4mL/min/cm^2$였다. 수소/이산화탄소 및 수소/일산화탄소 혼합가스를 각각 공급할 때 투과량은 압력에 상관없이 수소 분압 감소 만큼 감소하였고 모든 경우 Sievert 법칙을 잘 만족시켰다. 투과 후 분리막의 XRD, SEM/EDX 결과로부터 $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ 합금 분리막은 여러 혼합가스에 대해 안정성과 내구성이 우수하다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Effect of Pre-strain on Hydrogen Embrittlement in Intercritically Annealed Fe-6.5Mn-0.08C Medium-Mn steels

  • The present research deals with the effect of pre-strain on the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of intercritically annealed medium-Mn steels. A slow strain-rate tensile test was conducted after hydrogen charging by an electrochemical permeation method. Based on EBSD and XRD analysis results, the microstructure was composed of martensite and retained austenite of which fraction increased with an increase in the intercritical annealing temperature. The tensile test results showed that the steel with a higher fraction of retained austenite had relatively high hydrogen embrittlement resistance because the retained austenite acts as an irreversible hydrogen trap site. As the amount of pre-strain was increased, the hydrogen embrittlement resistance decreased notably due to an increase in the dislocation density and strain-induced martensite transformation.
