  • The polyamic acid (PAA) based on 3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride(BTDA)-3,3', 4,4'-dipheylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride(BAPP), 2,2-bis(4-[4-aminophenoxyl]phenyl) propane(DSDA)-3,3', 4,4'-dipheylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride(BAPP), and 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride(BTDA)-4,4'-oxydianiline(4,4'-ODA) was synthesised. The casted PAA films were partially imidised and the permeation properties of these PAA films for $O_2$ and $N_2$ were investigated according to the degree of imidisation. When the degree of imidisation was increased by curing, the permeabilities of the PAA films were increased for a while and then decreased. These results show that the increase of gas permeation by the disappearence of strong hydrogen bond is larger than the decrease of gas permeation by the dense effect. The decrease of hydrogen bond between molecular chains of PAA suddenly increases the vibration of the chain to make holes but the compaction in polymer chain gradually decreases the gas permeation. The largest values of permeability of BTDA-BAPP, DSDA-BAPP and BTDA-4,4'-ODA film was 8.3, 0.3 and 0.8 barrer respectively, and the imidisation content corresponding to the values of the largest permeability was 37, 47 and 55% each. But the permselctivities of the PAA films were not changed by the variation of the degree of imidisation.

  • Films of TiO$_2$/SiO$_2$ were deposited on the inner surface of the porous glass support tubes by decomposition of tetraisopropyl titanate (TIPT) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) at atmospheric pressure. Dense and hydrogen -permselective membranes were formed at 400-600$\^{C}$. The permeation rates of H$_2$ through the membrane at 600$\^{C}$ were 0.2-0.4 ㎤(STP)/min-㎠ atm and H$_2$:N$_2$permeation ratios were above 1000. The permeation properties of the membranes were investigated at various deposition temperatures and TIPT/TEOS concentrations. Decomposition of TIPT alone at temperatures above 400$\^{C}$ produced porous crystalline TiO$_2$ films and they were not H7-selective. Decomposition of TEOS produced H$_2$-permeable SiO$_2$ films at 400-600$\^{C}$ but film deposition rate was very low. Addition of TIFT to the TEOS stream significantly accelerated the deposition rate and produced highly H$_2$-selective films. Increasing the TIPT/TEOS concentration ratio increased the deposition rate. The TiO$_2$/SiO$_2$ membranes formed at 600 $\^{C}$ have the permeation properties comparable to those of SiO$_2$ membranes produced from TEOS.

  • The mechanical properties of the hydrogen valve responsible for supplying and blocking hydrogen gas in a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) were researched. Mechanical properties by hydrogen embrittlement were investigated by coating chromium nitride (CrN) and titanium nitride (TiN) on aluminum alloy by arc ion plating method. The coating layer was deposited to a thickness of about 2 ㎛, and a slow strain rate test (SSRT) was conducted after hydrogen embrittlement to determine the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the CrN and TiN coating layers. The CrN-coated specimen presented little decrease in mechanical properties until 12 hours of hydrogen charging due to its excellent resistance to hydrogen permeation. However, both the CrN and TiN-coated specimens exhibited deterioration in mechanical properties due to the peeling of the coating layer after 24 hours of hydrogen charging. The specimens coated at 350 ℃ presented a significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength due to abnormal grain growth.

  • Thermochemical water-splitting IS(Iodine-Sulfur) process has been investigating for large-scale hydrogen production. For the construction of an efficient process scheme, two kinds of membrane technologies are under investigating to improve the hydrogen producing HI decomposition step. One is a concentration of HI in quasi-azeotropic HIx ($HI-H_2O-I_2$) solution by elecro-electrodialysis. It was confirmed that HI concentrated from the $HI-H_2O-I_2$ solution with a molar ratio of 1:5:1 at $80^{\circ}C$. The other is a membrane reactor to enhance the one-pass conversion of thermal decomposition reaction of gaseous hydrogen iodide (HI). It was found from the simulation study that the conversion of over 0.9 would be attainable using the membrane reactor using the gas permeation properties of the prepared silica hydrogen permselective membrane by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Design criterion of the membrane reactor was also discussed.

  • In this work, to detect of hydrogen in DI water in the generator area of nuclear power plants was fabricated Pd/Pt gate MISFET sensor using Pd membrane. $H_2$ permeation through Pd accounts for external mass transfer, surface adsorption and desorption, transitions to and from the bulk metal, and diffusion within the metal. The identification of pinholes in the generator area of plant is an important safety consideration, as hydrogen build-up gives rise to explosion. For this type of application the sensor needs to be isolated in DI water, accordingly, a Pd membrane was used to separate the DI water. The hydrogen in the DI water was then absorbed on the Pd thin film and diffused into the oil through the thin film. The Pd/Pt gate MISFET sensor, encapsulated by oil, will thereby detect permeated hydrogen.

  • A palladium-nikel(Pd-Ni) alloy composite membrane has been fabricated on microporous nickel support formed with nickel powder. Plasma surface treatment process is introduced as pre-treatment process instead of HCI activation. Pd coating layer was prepared by dc magnetron sputtering deposition after $H_2$ plasma surface treatment. Palladium-nickel alloy composite layer had a fairly uniform and dense surface morphology. The membrane was characterized by permeation experiments with hydrogen and nitrogen gases at temperature of 773 K and pressure of 2.2psi. The hydrogen permeance was 6 ml/minㆍ$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍatm and the selectivity was 120 for hydrogen/nitrogen($H_2$/$N_2$) mixing gases at 773 K.

  • Hydrogen isotopes, which are used as raw materials in fusion reaction, participate in the reaction only in small amount, and most of them are released together with impurities. In order to recover and reuse only hydrogen isotopes from this exhaust gas, a recovery process is required, and most of the hydrogen isotopes can be recovered using a Pd Membrane. In this study, the recovery rate of hydrogen isotopes was measured through the first and second stage Pd membrane experiments. In the case of the experiment using a single stage Pd membrane, about 99.2%, and in the case of the first stage and second stage Pd membrane connection experiments, a recovery rate of 99.9% or more was obtained. Therefore, the recovery rate of Pd membrane process applied to hydrogen can be applied to hydrogen isotopes. In addition, the simulation model was established using aspen custom modeler, a commercial software, and the validity of the simulation was checked by applying the references and experimental data. The simulation results based on the experimental data showed a difference of 2% or less.

  • In the present study, effects of a thin Zn-flash coating on hydrogen evolution, infusion, and embrittlement of advanced high strength steel during electro-galvanizing were examined. The electrochemical permeation technique in conjunction with impedance spectroscopy was employed under applied cathodic polarization. Moreover, a slow-strain rate test was conducted to evaluate loss of elongation (i.e., indicative of hydrogen embrittlement (HE)) and examine fracture surfaces. Results showed that the presence of a thin Zn-flash coating, even when it was not distributed uniformly, reduced hydrogen evolution rate and substantially impeded infusion of hydrogen into the steel substrate. This was primarily due to a hydrogen overvoltage on Zn coating and trapping of hydrogen at the interface of Zn coating/flash coating/steel substrate. Consequently, the sample with flash coating had a smaller HE index than the sample without flash coating. These results suggest that a thin Zn-flash coating could be an effective technical strategy for mitigating HE in advanced high-strength steels.

  • Martensitic high-strength steels revealed superior mechanical properties of high tensile strength exceeding 1000 Mpa, and have been applied in a variety of industries. When the steels are exposed to corrosive environments, however, they are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE), resulting in catastrophic cracking failure. To improve resistance to HE, it is crucial to obtain significant insight into the exact physical nature associated with hydrogen diffusion behavior in the steel. For martensitic steels, tempering condition should be adjusted carefully to improve toughness. The tempering process involves microstructural modifications, that provide changes in hydrogen diffusion/trapping behavior in the steels. From this perspective, this study examined the relationship between tempering condition and hydrogen diffusion behavior in the steels. Results based on glycerin measurements and hydrogen permeation evaluations indicated that hydrogen diffusion/trapping behavior was strongly affected by the characteristics of precipitates, as well as by metallurgical defects such as dislocation. Tempering condition should be adjusted properly by considering required mechanical properties and resistance to HE.
