  • In this study, the theoretical analysis focused on the quantity of liquid hydrogen required for cooling down to 20 K, as well as the generation of boil-off gas (BOG) from the cooling process of the cryogenic components. The study involved calculating the amount of liquid hydrogen needed to achieve the desired temperature for the cryogenic components and subsequently determining the resulting BOG production at various reference temperatures. It was shown that it was important to efficiently lower the temperature of cryogenic parts through preliminary cooling. As a result, the reference temperature and pressure had an influence on the BOG generation on the cooling of cryogenic components using liquid hydrogen.

  • The influences of pH were investigated for anaerobic hydrogen gas production under the constant pH condition ranged from pH 3 to 10. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas were main components of the gas but methane was not detected in the produced gas when sucrose was added in enrichment medium. When the modified Gompartz equation was applied for the statistical analysis of experimental data, a hydrogen production potential and maximum gas production rate at pH 5 were 1,182 mL and 112.46 mL/g dry wt biomass/hr. The hydrogen conversion ratio was 22.56%. The butyrate/acetate ratios at pH 5 and pH 6 are 1.63 and 0.38. Higher butyrate/acetate ratio produced more hydrogen gas generation. The Haldane equation model was used to find the optimum pH and fitted well with the experimental data$(r^2=0.98)$. The optimum pH and specific hydrogen production were 5.5 and 119.61 mL/g VSS/h.

  • The use of fossil fuels is a major contributor to the increase atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions. As such problems arise, interest in new and renewable energy devices, particularly fuel cells, is greatly increasing. In this study, various characteristics of mixed strains were observed in wastewater collected by the Jeonju Environment Office to investigate the effects of microorganisms on voltage generation and voltage generation of substrates, electrode materials, electrons, electron transport media, and ash microbial fuel cells. As a result of separately measuring the voltage generated during inoculation, the inoculation voltage of Escherichia coli K12 (E. coli K12) was 0.45 V, and the maximum inoculation voltage of the mixed strain was 1.2 V. Thereafter, voltage values were collected using a digital multimeter and the amount of voltage generated over time was measured. In the case of E. coli K12, the maximum voltage reached 0.45 V, and the cell voltage was maintained above 0.23 V for 140 hours. In contrast, for the mixed strain, the maximum voltage reached 1.2 V and the voltage was slowly decreased to 0.97 V. In addition, the degree of microbial adsorption to the electrod surface after the inoculation test was confirmed using a scanning electron microscope. Therefore, these results showed the possibility of purifying pollutants at the same time as power generation through the production of hydrogen ions using microorganisms and wastewater.

  • Global interest in hydrogen energy is increasing as an eco-friendly future energy that can replace fossil fuels. Accordingly, a next-generation hydrogen production technology using microorganisms, nuclear power, etc. is being developed, while a lot of time and effort are still required to overcome the cost of hydrogen production based on fossil fuels. As a way to minimize greenhouse gas emissions in the hydrocarbon-based hydrogen production process, methane direct decomposition technology has recently attracted attention. In order to improve the economic feasibility of the process, the simultaneous production of value-added carbon materials with hydrogen can be one of the most essential aspects. For that purpose, various studies on catalysis related to the quality and yield of high-value carbon materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In terms of process technology, a number of the research and development of fluidized-bed reactors capable of continuous production and improved gas-solid contact efficiency has been attempted. Recently, methane direct decomposition technology using a fluidized bed has been developed to the extent that it can produce 270 kg/day of hydrogen and 1000 kg/day of carbon. Plus, with the development of catalyst regeneration, separation and recirculation technologies, the process efficiency can be further improved. This review paper investigates the recent development of catalysts and fluidized bed reactor for methane direct pyrolysis to identify the key challenges and opportunities.

  • The effect of arc like streamer discharge is investigated on the hydrogen generation in the plasma reactor with multineedle - plate electrode geometry and SDR (Plasma reactor using the surface discharge). An additive of the two type (the saw type and the pellet type) was placed under the water surface to investigate the effect of the water surface conditions. The experimental results are compared in case of the reactor with and without an additive on the water surface. The generation of arc streamer discharge is more powerful with increasing applied voltage in the saw type. The maximum hydrogen Production concentration is about 4300 ppm at 74W in the SDR with additive of the saw type. Also, the Energy yield of the SDR (28990 g/kWh, 4300ppm, 74W) is higher than of the multineedle - plate electrode geometry (20892g/kWh, 3300ppm, 77W).

  • H2 generation from renewable sources is crucial for ensuring sustainable production of energy. One approach to achieve this goal is biohydrogen production by utilizing renewable resources such as biomass and microorganisms. In contrast to commercial methods, biohydrogen production needs ambient temperature and pressure, thereby requiring less energy and cost. Biohydrogen production can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). However, it is also associated with significant challenges, including low hydrogen yields, hydrodynamic issues in bioreactors, and the need for H2 separation and purification methods to obtain high-purity H2. Various technologies have been developed for hydrogen separation and purification, including cryogenic distillation, pressure-swing adsorption, absorption, and membrane technology. This review addresses important experimental developments in dense polymeric membranes for biohydrogen purification.

  • In this study, rotary magnet holder (RMH) was manufactured to analyze the ion transport effect according to the rotating magnetic field for the hydrogen production efficiency by alkaline water electrolyte. In the experiment, the voltage signal according to the magnet arrangement inside the RMH, the rotation speed, and the rotation time was measured using the voltage measurement module. As a result of the voltage signal measurement experiment, the average potential difference increased as the rotation speed of the RMH increased. Through the results of the voltage signal measurement experiment, the most efficient magnet arrangement (case 2) was applied to the RMH to conduct a water electrolysis experiment. A 20% NaOH aqueous solution was filled in the electrolytic cell, and a direct current 2 V constant voltage was applied to measure the current value according to the RMH rotation to compare the hydrogen generation amount. When rotating at 100 RPM, the hydrogen production efficiency increased by 8.06% compared to when not rotating. Considering the area exceeding +25 mA, which was not measured at the beginning of the experiment, an increase in hydrogen production of about 10% or more can be expected.

  • The ammonia-water based power generation cycle utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its heat sink has attracted much attention, since the ammonia-water cycle has many thermodynamic advantages in conversion of low-grade heat source in the form of sensible energy and LNG has a great cold energy. In this paper, we carry out thermodynamic performance analysis of a combined power generation cycle which is consisted of an ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle and LNG power generation cycle. LNG is able to condense the ammonia-water mixture at a very low condensing temperature in a heat exchanger, which leads to an increased power output. Based on the thermodynamic models, the effects of the key parameters such as source temperature, ammonia concentration and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of system are throughly investigated. The results show that the thermodynamic performance of the ammonia-water power generation cycle can be improved by the LNG cold energy and there exist an optimum ammonia concentration to reach the maximum system net work production.

  • The thermal behavior of $NiFe_2O_4$ prepared by a solid-state reaction was investigated for $H_2$ generation by the thermochemical cycle. The reduction of $NiFe_2O_4$ started from $800^{\circ}C$, and the weight loss was 0.2-0.3 wt% up to $1000^{\circ}C$. In the $H_2O$ decomposition reaction, $H_2$ was generated by oxidation of reduced $NiFe_2O_4$. The crystal structure of $NiFe_2O_4$ maintained during the redox reaction of 5 cycles. From this observation, the lattice oxygen in $NiFe_2O_4$ is released without the structural change during the thermal reduction and oxygen deficient $NiFe_2O_4$ can be restored to the spinel structure of $NiFe_2O_4$.

  • Electrochemical devices are constructed for continuous syngas (CO + H2) production with controlled selectivity between CO2 and proton reduction reactions. The ratio of CO to H2, or the faradaic efficiency toward CO generation, was mechanically manipulated by adjusting the space volume between the cathode and the polymer gas separator in the device. In particular, the area added between the cathode and the ion-conducting polymer using 0.5 M KHCO3 catholyte regulated the solution acidity and proton reduction kinetics in the flow cell. The faradaic efficiency of CO production was controlled as a function of the distance between the polymer separator and cathode in addition to that manipulated by the electrode potential. Further, the electrochemical CO2 reduction device using Au NPs presented a stable operation for more than 23 h at different H2:CO production levels, demonstrating the functional stability of the flow cell utilizing the mechanical variable as an important operational factor.
