  • Hypoxia has persisted during summer in the bottom water of the lower portion of the Rappahannock Estuary, a western shore tributary of Chesapeake Bay. A laterally integrated two-dimensional, real-time model, consisting of linked hydrodynamic and water quality models, was developed to study the contributing processes for hypoxia. The hydrodynamic model gives the information of physical transport processes, both advective and diffusive, to the water quality model, which simulates the spatial and temporal distributions of eight water quality state variables. • The study was aimed to evaluate the applicability of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality model, ELCOM-CAEDYM for Yongdam Reservoir, Korea. The model was applied for the simulations of hydrodynamics, thermal stratification processes, stream density flow propagation, and water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic materials, and algal biomass (chl-a) for the period of June to December, 2006. The field data observed at four monitoring stations (ST1~ST4) within the reservoir were used to validate the models performance. The model showed reasonable performance nevertheless low frequency boundary forcing data were provided, and well replicated the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the system. Simulated spatial and temporal variations of water temperature, nutrients, and chl-a concentrations were moderately consistent with the field observations. In particular, the model rationally reproduced the succession of different algal species; i.e., diatom dominant during spring and early summer, after then cyanobacteria dominant under warm and stratified conditions. ELCOM-CAEDYM is recommendable as a suitable coupled 3D hydrodynamic and water quality model that can be effectively used for the advanced water quality management of large stratified reservoirs in Korea.

  • We in the Korea Institute for Advanced Study are preparing the fifth Horizon Run in a series of large-scale cosmological simulations. For the first time we will include full hydrodynamics and astrophysical processes using a RAMSES code. I will discuss the impact of large-scale structures on smaller scale properties in cosmological hydrodynamic simulation to justify our choice of simulation boxsize, whose one side length is up to 1 Gpc.

  • Poly(allylamine) hydrochloride is a weak cationic polyelectrolyte that exhibits different aggregation properties at different solution pH values and aging times. Specifically, after several days aging in a pH 3 buffer, less than 1 mg/mL poly(allylamine) hydrochloride became turbid, and the hydrodynamic radius increased with a single diffusion mode. However, the hydrodynamic radius did not change at high concentrations. The dynamic processes of polymer aggregations at different pH values were verified by a light scattering and zeta-potential apparatus. The major interaction was caused by the capturing of counterions by the polyelectrolyte, which generates electrostatic, hydrophobic and cation-p interactions.

  • In this paper, we describe a physicomathematical model of the processes that occur in a sodium circuit with a variable flow cross-section in the case of a water leak into sodium. The application area for this technique includes the possibility of analyzing consequences of this leak as applied to sodium-water steam generators in fast neutron reactors. Hydrodynamic processes that occur in sodium circuits in the event of a water leak are described within the framework of a one-dimensional thermally nonequilibrium three-component gas-liquid flow model (sodium-hydrogen-sodium hydroxide). Consideration is given to the results of a mathematical modeling of experiments involving steam injection into the sodium loop of a circulation test facility. That was done by means of the computer code in which the proposed model had been implemented.

  • This study addresses a microfluidic method to uniformly form diacetylene (DA) liposomes and control their size. DA liposomes are biochemical sensor materials with a unique property such that when they are polymerized to polydiacetylene (PDA) they exhibit non-fluorescent blue to fluorescent red phase transition upon chemical or thermal stress. The liposome size and distribution are important because they significantly affect the phase transition. So far, DA Liposomes, have been prepared by mixing of bulk phases leading to heterogeneous, polydisperse distribution in size. Therefore, additional post-processes are required such as sonication or membrane extrusion to obtain an appropriate size of liposomes. Here, we report a novel strategy using a microfluidic chip and hydrodynamic focusing to form DA liposomes and control their size. Preliminary results obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) show that the microfluidic strategy generates more monodispersed liposomes than a bulk method.

  • Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.

  • The generation of fine relics of suspensions is a significant interest as it holds the key to the fabrication of electronic devices. These processes offer opportunities for miniaturization of multilayer circuits, for production of functionally graded materials, ordered composites and far small complex-shaped components. Some novel printing methods of depositing ceramic and metal droplets were suggested in recent years. In an electro-hydrodynamic printing, the metallic capillary nozzle can be raised to several kilovolts with respect to the infinite ground plate or pin-type electrode positioned a few millimeters from the nozzle tip. Depending on the electrical and physical properties of the liquid, for a given geometry, it Is possible to generate droplets in any one of three modes, dripping, cone-jet and multi-jet. In this experiment, an alumina suspension flowing through a nozzle was subjected to electro-hydrodynamic printing using pin-type electrodes in the cone-jet mode at different applied voltages. The pin-type electrodes of 1, 100, 1000${\mu}m$ in diameter were used to form fine ceramic patterns onto the substrates. Various feature sizes with applied voltages and electrode diameters were measured. The feature sizes increased with the electrode diameter and applied voltages. The feature size was as fine as $30 {\mu}m$.

  • An abnormal mono-specific bloom of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa had developed at a specific location (transitional zone, monitoring station of Hoenam) in Daecheong Reservoir from middle of July to early August, 2001. The maximum cell counts during the peak bloom reached 1,477,500 cells/mL, which was more than 6~10 times greater than those at other monitoring sites. The hypothesis of this study is that the timing and location of the algal bloom was highly correlated with the local environmental niche that was controled by physical processes such as hydrodynamic mixing and pollutant transport in the reservoir. A three-dimensional, coupled hydrodynamic and ecological model, ELCOM-CAEDYM, was applied to the period of development and subsequent decline of the bloom. The model was calibrated against observed water temperature profiles and water quality variables for different locations, and applied to reproduce the algal bloom event and justify the limiting factor that controled the Microcystis bloom at R3. The simulation results supported the hypothesis that the phosphorus loading induced from a contaminated tributary during several runoff events are closely related to the rapid growth of Microcystis during the period of bloom. Also the physical environments of the reservoir such as a strong thermal stratification and weak wind velocity conditions provided competitive advantage to Microcystis given its light adaptation capability. The results show how the ELCOM-CAEDYM captures the complex interactions between the hydrodynamic and biogeochemical processes, and the local environmental niche that is preferable for cyanobacterial species growth.
