  • In this study, hull dimensions of an FPSO were optimized to maximize its operability at Brazil field. In contrast with the previous works which have used simplified models to evaluate some indicators related to stability and hydrodynamic performances of FPSOs for its own optimal design, we developed a generic hull and compartment modeler and sophisticated stability and hydrodynamic calculation modules. With the aid of the developed tools, the hull optimization was performed with initial dimensions of an FPSO originally designed for west Africa field. The optimization results indicated the relative importance of hydrodynamic performances compared with stability performances for the FPSO hull dimensioning by showing that there were 3 active constraints related to them, which were the natural periods of heave and roll and the maximum pitch angle under 1-year return period waves at full load condition. To the author's knowledge, this study is the first attempt to combine altogether the hull and compartment modeling and full set of stability and hydrodynamic calculations precisely to optimize an FPSO's hull dimensions within 30 min. Also, it is worthwhile to mention that the developed methods are generic enough to be applied to all types of ship-shaped offshore platforms.

  • In this paper, numerical analyses were undertaken to calculate the static and dynamic performances of step-pocket, inward pumping spiral grooved, outward pumping spiral grooved and herringbone grooved bearings. For each bearing, optimal values for various design parameters were obtained to maximize the load capacity and the stiffness and bearing performances were calculated. The optimized performances of these bearings were compared to conclude that the performance of step-pocket bearing is better than the other bearings.

  • A ducted marine propulsor has been widely used for the thruster of underwater vehicles for protecting collision damage, increasing propulsive efficiency, and reducing cavitation. Since a single-stage ducted propulsor contains a set of rotor and stator inside an annular duct, the numerical analysis becomes extremely complex and computationally expensive. However, the accurate prediction of viscous flow past a ducted marine propulsor is essential for determining hydrodynamic forces and the propulsive performances. To analyze a ducted propulsor having rotor-stator Interaction, the present work has solved 3D incompressible RANS equations on the sliding multiblocked grid. The flow of a single stage turbine flow was simulated for code validation and time averaged pressure coefficients were compared with experiments. Good agreement was obtained. The hydrodynamic performance coefficients were also computed.

  • A model test was carried out, in order to verify the hydrodynamic performances of public 30 feet class sailing yacht. In the initial design stage, the performances and the running attitude of sail yacht including the hull form and sail plan, appendages were estimated by VPP, from which made the representative test conditions. A new experiment system such as captive model device was composed because the running attitude could be changed by wind conditions. The test results show that the minimum resistance is generated in the heeling 20 degree, which was expected in the initial design stage. It is thought to be the useful informations that the keel has au effects on hydrodynamic forces and resistance differences between the upwind and the downwind condition.

  • new bearing concept, the wave journal bearing, has been developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of an air-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearing. This concept features waves on bearing surface. In this study, we present the solution of the compressible Reynolds equation valid for arbitrary Knudsen numbers. Straight wave journal bearing is investigated numerically. The performances of straight wave bearing are compared to the plain journal bearing over relatively wide range of bearing number and eccentricity. The wave journal bearing offers better stability than the plain journal bearing under a13 bearing numbers covered in this study. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on the geometric parameters such as the amplitude and the starting point of the wave relative to the applied load. Under the condition of Knudsen number)0.01, we can not ignore the effect of slip for journal bearing.

  • The experimental characterization of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is performed for the practical implementation of high-performance hard disk drive system. Firstly, the design concept of hydrodynamic bearing for the disk drive system is addressed including the herringbone grooved journal bearing, the spiral grooved thrust bearing, capillary seal design, and the viscous pumping of fluid. Secondly, the experimental evaluation is performed for the disk drive system in which the hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is implemented and its dynamic performances are compared with conventional ball-bearing spindle motor. The key parameters include NRRO(Non Repeatable Run-Out), disk dynamics, acoustics, and resultant PES (Position Error Signal). Finally, the external gyro-exciting test results including 200k CSS(Continuous Start-Stop) on three angular attitudes(0,90, 180 degree) are presented in order to verify the practical reliability of disk drive system subject to the gyro-motion of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor.
