Optimized biodiesel yield in a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor using response surface methodology

  • Biodiesel is a non-polluting and non-toxic energy source that can replace conventional diesel. However, the higher production cost and raw material scarcity became challenges that obstruct the commercialization of biodiesel production. In the current investigation, fried cooking oil is used for biodiesel production in a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor, thus enhancing raw material availability and helping better waste oil disposal. However, due to the cavitation effect inside the reactor, the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor can give biodiesel yield above 98%. Thus, the use of orifice plates (having a different number of holes for cavitation) in the reactor shows more than 90% biodiesel yield within 10 mins of a time interval. The effects of rising temperature at different molar ratios are also investigated. The five-hole plate achieves the highest yield for a 4.5:1 molar ratio at 65℃. And the similar result is predicted by the response surface methodology model; however, the optimized yield is obtained at 60℃. The investigation will help understand the effect of hydrodynamic cavitation on biodiesel yield at different molar ratios and elevated temperatures.

Comparing geometric parameters of a hydrodynamic cavitation process treating pesticide effluent

  • Paper focuses on comparison between two different orifice plate configurations (plate number 1 and plate number 2) used as cavitating device in the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor for improving pollutant removal efficiencies. Effect of four different parameters such as hydraulic characteristics (in terms of range of flow rates, orifice velocities, cavitation number at different inlet pressures); cavitation number (in range of 5.76-0.35 for plate number 1 and 1.20-0.35 for plate number 2); inlet pressure (2-8 bars) and reaction time (0 to 60 min) in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and chlorpyrifos degradation has been studied and compared. Optimum inlet pressure of 5 bars exists for degradation of pollutants for both the plates. It is found that geometry of orifice plate plays important role in removal efficiencies of pollutant. Results obtained confirmed that orifice plate 1 with configuration of 1.5 mm 17 holes; cavitational number of 1.54 performed better with around 60% COD and 98% chlorpyrifos removal as compared to orifice plate 2 having configuration of 2 mm single hole; cavitational number of 0.53 with 40% COD and 96% chlorpyrifos in 2 h duration time.

  • This paper presents the dynamic characteristics of r rotor-bearing system supported by an actively controlled hydrodynamic journal bearing. The proportional, derivative and integral controls are adopted for the control algorithm to control the hydrodynamic journal bearing with an axially groove. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-olsson boundery condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than conventional analysis, which uses the Reynolds condition. The speed at onset of instability of a rotor-bearing system is increased by both proportional and derivative control of the bearing. The integral control has no effect on stability characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearing. The PD-control is more effective than proportional or derivative control. Results show the active control of bearing can be adopted for the stability improvement of a rotor-bearing system.

Slotted hydrofoil design optimization to minimize cavitation in amphibious aircraft application: A numerical simulation approach

  • The proposed study aims to numerically investigate the performance of hydrofoils in the context of amphibious aircraft application. In particular, we also study the effectiveness of a slotted hydrofoil in minimizing the cavitation phenomenon, to improve the overall water take-off performance of an amphibious aircraft. We use the ICON A5 as a base model for this study. First, we propose an approach to estimate the required hydrofoil surface area and to select the most suitable airfoil shape that can minimize cavitation, thus improving the hydrodynamic efficiency. Once the hydrofoil is selected, we perform 2D numerical studies of the hydrodynamic and cavitating characteristics of a non-slotted hydrofoil on ANSYS Fluent. In this work, we also propose to use a slotted hydrofoil to be a passive method to control the cavitation performance through the boundary layer control. Numerical results of several slotted configurations demonstrate notable improvement on the cavitation performance. We then perform a multiobjective optimization with a response surface model to simultaneously minimize the cavitation and maximize the hydrodynamic efficiency of the hydrofoil. The optimization takes the slot geometry, including the slot angle and lengths, as the design variables. In addition, a global sensitivity study has been carried and it shows that the slot widths are the more dominant factors.

  • The production of high quality oil to meet new standard needs a 'next generation' innovative oil refining tool in paradigm shift. 'Nanoneutralization' using controlled hydrodynamic cavitation-assisted Nanoreactor is successfully being introduced and commercialized into edible oil industry and it plays a key driver for sustainable development of food processing. This emerging technology using bubble dynamics as a consequence of Bernoulli's principle by hydrodynamic cavitation in Venturi-designed multi-flow through cell is radically changing the conventionally chemical-oriented neutralization. Nanoneutralization derived by the creation of nanometer-sized bubbles formed through scientifically structured geometric channels under high pressure has been proven to improve mass transfer and reaction rate so substantially reduce the chemicals required for refined vegetable oil and to increase oil yield while even improving oil quality. More researches on science behind this revolutionary technology will help usto better understand the principle and process hence makes its potential applications expandable in extraction, refining and modification of fats and oils processing.

  • 본 연구는 멸균 방법 중 하나인 수력학적 공동현상을 이용한 살균처리로 인한 우유의 비타민, 무기질 및 지방 함량에 대한 영향을 조사하고자 한다. 비타민(vitamin A, vitamin $B_2$),무기질(Ca, P, Mg, Zn) 및 조지방 함량을 식품의약품안전처의 축산물 가공기준 및 성분규격 실험법에 따라 측정하였다. Vitamin A는 처리 후 약 23% 감소하였고, vitamin $B_2$는 약 19% 감소하였다. 무기질의 경우, 처리 전후의 함량 차이가 거의 보이지 않았다. 또한 P는 2 mg/100g, Mg은 0.1 mg/100g의 함량 차이를 보였다. 우유의 조지방 함량은 처리 전 3.46%, 처리 후 3.41%로 차이가 거의 나타나지 않았다. 수력학적 공동현상 처리 시 우유의 비타민과 무기질 함량을 변화시키지 않아 기존 살균 방법을 대체할 수 있는 가능성을 보여주었다. 따라서 기존 가열 살균처리 시 발생하는 이화학적 특성 및 품질의 변화를 강조하고, 우수한 품질의 우유를 공급하기 위하여 수력학적 공동현상 살균처리에 대한 명확하고 체계적인 연구가 더 이루어져야할 것으로 보인다.

초월공동 수중운동체용 제어핀의 유체력 특성에 대한 실험연구 (An Experimental Study on Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Control Fin for a Supercavitating Underwater Vehicle)

  • Wedge-shaped fins are generally used to provide sufficient forces and moments to control and maneuver a supercavitating vehicle. There are four fins placed along the girth of the vehicle, near he tail: two of the fins are horizontal and the other two fins are vertical. In a fully developed supercavitating flow condition, a part of the fin is in a cavity pocket and the other is exposed to water. In this paper, experimental investigations of hydrodynamic characteristics of the wedge-shaped fin models are presented. Experiments were conducted at a cavitation tunnel of the Chungnam National University. We first closely observed the typical formation of wake cavitation and measured lift and drag forces acting on two different test models. Next, using a special device for generating natural and artificial supercavities, we investigated hydrodynamic forces at different cavitation number conditions. This work provides a basis for interpreting the cavity stability and hydrodynamic characteristics of the wedge-shaped control fin for a supercavitating vehicle.

Performance prediction of horizontal axis marine current turbines

  • In this study, hydrodynamic performance of a 400 mm diameter horizontal axis marine current turbine model was tested in a cavitation tunnel with 1.21 m x 0.8 m cross-section for over a range of tip speed ratios. Torque and thrust data, as well as cavitation visualizations, for certain operating conditions were acquired. Experimental results indicated that the turbine can be exposed to significant amount of sheet and cloud cavitation over the blades along with vortex cavitation at the blade tips. Inception and distribution of cavitation along the blades of the model turbine were then modelled numerically for design operating conditions using a vortex lattice method. The method was also applied to a turbine tested previously and obtained results were compared with the data available. The comparison between simulation results and experimental data showed a slight difference in terms of span-wise extent of the cavitation region. The cloud and tip vortex cavity observed in experiments cannot be modelled due to the fact that the VLM lacks the ability to predict such types of cavitation. Notwithstanding, the use of such prediction methods can provide a reasonably accurate approach to estimate, therefore take the hydrodynamic effects of cavitation into account in design and analysis of marine current turbines.

유체 윤활 저널베어링의 음원 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Sound Source of Hydrodynamic proceeding Bearings)

  • Results of theoretical investigations on acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are presented. Nonlinear analysis of rotor bearing system including rotor imbalance is performed in order to obtain acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings. Furthermore, a cavitation algorithm, implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition, is adopted to predict cavitation regions in a fluid film. Acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are identified through frequency analysis of pressure fluctuation calculated from the nonlinear transient analysis. The results show that the acoustical frequency spectra of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are pure tone spectra, containing the frequency of the shaft rotation and its super-harmonics. The analysis also shows that the super-harmonics are predominant at neighborhood of the fluid film reformation and rupture regions.

동압 베어링의 비례 및 미분 제어 (Proportional and Derivative Control of Hydrodynamic Journal Bearings)

The proportional and derivative controls including coupled motion are adopted for the control algorithm to control the hydrodynamic journal bearing with a circumferentially groove. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than a conventional analysis which uses the Reynolds condition. The stability characteristics of a rotor-bearing system supported by actively controlled hydrodynamic journal bearing are investigated for various control gains with the Routh-Hurwitz criteria using the linear dynamic coefficients which are obtained from the perturbation method. It is found that the speed at onset of the instability is increased for both proportional and derivative control of the bearing. It is also found that the proportional and derivative control of the coupled motion is more effective than that of the uncoupled motion.
