  • DIWS system was employed to treat hydrochloric acid gas from cold rolling mill process of iron and steel industry. Chlorine gas generated from the acid regeneration system was combined with hydrogen gas and hydrogen chloride gas was increased to 50%. After the injection of Na2S2O3 to remove chlorine gas, the removal of hydrogen chloride was stably kept 87.5~88.8%, where the inflow was 13.1~13.4ppm and the outflow was 1.5~1.7ppm. DIWS system can be recommended for the real iron and steel plant because it was stably maintained not only the air emission standards but also the reduction of chemical usage.

  • With the rapid increase in seawater desalination, the importance of boron rejection is rising. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrophilic compounds on surface modification to maximize water flux and increase boron rejection. First, polyamide active layer was fabricated by interfacial polymerization of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane with M-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to obtain Control polyamide membrane. Next, D-gluconic acid (DGCA) and D-gluconic acid sodium salt (DGCA-Na) were synthesized with glutaraldehyde (GA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) by modifying the surface of Control polyamide membrane. XPS analysis was carried out for the surface analysis of the synthesized membrane, and it was confirmed that the reaction of surface with DGCA and DGCA-Na compounds was performed. Also, FE-SEM and AFM analysis were performed for morphology measurement, and polyamide active layer formation and surface roughness were confirmed. In the case of water flux, the membrane fabricated by the surface modification had a value of 10 GFD or less. However, the boron rejection of the membranes synthesized with DGCA and DGCA-Na compounds were 94.38% and 94.64%, respectively, which were 12.03 %p and 12.29 %p larger than the Control polyamide membrane, respectively.

  • The acid pretreatment of collagen molecules disrupts their crosslinks and assists in the release of acid-soluble proteins, fats, and other components. Generally, to achieve optimum extraction efficiency, strong acids may be used at a lower acid concentration compared to weak acids. This study aimed to determine the yield and physicochemical properties of gelatins extracted from buffalo hides pretreated with different acids. Hides were extracted with hydrochloric, citric, and acetic acids at concentrations of 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 M. A completely randomized design and the least significant difference test were used in the experimental design, and all measurements were performed in triplicate. The highest yield (29.17%) was obtained from pretreatment with 0.9 M HCl. The gel strength did not differ significantly (p>0.05) according to acid type (280.26-259.62 g Bloom), and the highest viscosity was obtained from the 0.6 M citric acid pretreatment. All the gelatins contained ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-chain components and several degraded peptides (24-66 kDa). The color and Fourier-transform infrared spectrum of the gelatin extracted using 0.9 M HCl were similar to those of commercial bovine skin gelatin. In general, the physicochemical properties of the gelatin complied with the industry standard set by the Gelatin Manufacturers Institute of America, revealing that buffalo hide could serve as a potential alternative source of gelatin.

  • Ion exchange procedure was studied for the separation of thorium from the acidic solution obtained by means of decomposition of monazite with alkali solution. Present cation exchange method consists of adsorption of cations from the sample solution (ca. 0.6N HCl acidic) onto Amberlite IR-120 resin, elution of all of the rare earth cations with 700 ml. of 2N Hydrochloric acid, and recovery of the thorium by elution with 200ml. of 6N sulfaric acid. Thorium recovery by the ion-exchange method mentioned above, was quantitative, and it is concluded that this ion-exchange method may be used not only for industrial separation of thorium from rare earths but also for quantitative determination of thorium with relative error, ${\pm}1.0.$.

  • In this paper, we carried out separation of membrane and leaching of Pt and Ru using hydrochloric acid from MEA(membrane-electrode assembly) of fuel cell. In this method, these were separated from MEA of fuel cell using the distilled water, 10 vol.% butanol solution and 15 vol.% cationic surfactant(Koremul-LN-7) by dipping method without the dispersion of catalyst particles. And the leaching of Pt and Ru containing in the separated carbon paper catalysts has been studied by hydrochloric acid using $HNO_3$ or $H_2O_2$ as a oxidant. The leaching ratio of Pt and Ru were higher when $H_2O_2$ was used as a oxidant and the optimum conditions were obtained in 8M HCl, the amount of $H_2O_2$ 5M and 6 hours of leaching time at $90^{\circ}C$. In this condition, extraction of Pt and Ru were 98% and 71.5%, respectively.

  • A new $N_3O_2$ pentadentate ligand, N,N'-Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-ethylenetriamine(H-BHET 3HCl) was synthesized. The hydrochloric acid salts of Br-BHET 3HCl, Cl-BHET 3HCl, $CH_3O$-BHET 3HCl and $CH_3$-BHET 3HCl containing Br-, Cl-, H-, $CH_3O-$ and $CH_3-$ groups at the para-site of the phenol group of the H-BHEP were synthesized. The structures of the ligands were confirmed by C. H. N. atomic analysis and $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, UV-visible and mass spectra. The calculated stepwise protonation constants(${\logK_n}^H$) of the synthesized $N_3O_2$ ligands showed six steps of the proton dissociation. The orders of the overall protonation constants($\log{\beta}_p$) of the ligands were Br-BHET < Cl-BHET < H-BHET < $CH_3O$-BHET < $CH_3$-BHET. The orders agreed well with that of para Hammett substituent constants(${\delta}_p$). The calculated stability constants($\logK_{ML}$) between the ligands and heavy metal ions (Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II)) agreed well with the order of the overall proton dissociation constants of the ligands but they showed a reverse order in para Hammestt substituent constants(${\delta}_p$). The order of the stability constants between the heavy metal ions with the synthesized ligands were Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Pb(II).

  • In order to investigate the mechanism of dissolutin of nickel from a matte composed essentially of heazlewoodite and ferronickel, the leaching in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric was carried out at $50-90^{\circ}C$, 0.5-3.ON HCl, and with the particle sizes between $100-160{\mu}m$ and $400-500{\mu}m$. The leaching rate of heazlewoodite was much rapider than that of ferronickel, and the two components were simultaneously dissolved with different reaction rates. Within the experimental range, NiS, an intermediate, was not formed. However a possibility to form a thin layer of NiS on particle surface upon saturating the reaction mixture with $H_2S$ was not excluded. At the initial stage, the activation energy was about 10 kcal/g mol. The reaction occurred at the particle surface, and consequently the particle size decreased with time. The rate of dissoultion for nickel was linearly proportional to the concentration of HCl up to 1.0N.

  • Isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polytetramethylene glycol 1000 (PTMG1000), and N-methyl diethanol amine (MDEA) were applied to prepare cationic polyurethane water dispersions (PUD). Various neutralizers and chain extenders were introduced in order to investigate property changes, such as particle size, viscosity, $T_g$, tensile strength, and water swellability, depending on chemical structure of those chemicals. While the PUDs neutralized by acetic acid showed a typical elastomeric behavior, the others used with hydrochloride presented crystalline behavior. Among chain extenders isophorone diamine (IPDA) provided the best mechanical property. The particle size of the PUD neutralized with HCl was smaller than that with acetic acid. It is believed that this is attributed to the size difference of counter ions. The PUD chain-extended with hydrazine had the smallest particle size.

  • The Lowry method was used in this study to measure protein in Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccines (polyribosylibitol phosphate-tetanus toxoid; PRP-TT) using deoxycholic acid (DOC) to induce protein precipitation. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) did not induce precipitation adequately from the Hib conjugate bulk and the freeze-dried Hib conjugate product. Its yield was approximately 50%. The matrix structure of Hib conjugate inhibits precipitation by TCA. Although the Lowry method can be carried out without precipitation in Hib conjugate bulk when no residual impurities (adipic acid dihydrazide [ADH], 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylamino-propyl) carbodiimide-HCI [EDAC], phenol and cyanogens bromide [CNBr], etc.) are present, it cannot be used for Hib conjugate products that contain sucrose 8.5%, because 8.5% concentration of sucrose enhanced the protein concentration. DOC- and HCl-induced precipitation is an alternative method for evaluating the protein content of the Hib conjugate bulk and the Hib conjugate product. The precipitation was optimal with a final concentrate of 0.1% for DOC at $4^{\circ}C$ and pH 2. This Lowry method, using DOC/HCI precipitation to induce protein precipitation, was confirmed a consistent, reproducible, and valid test for proteins in Hib conjugate bulk and its freeze-dried product.

  • In this study, the feasibility of soil washing and soil flushing was investigated to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Particularly, EDTA, well known as the most effective washing agent for removal of heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove zinc in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was the most effective. However, it is not effective to use HCl solution over 0.1 M concentration. Sequential process using HCl was effective to enhance the removal efficiency of zinc. In column test, the removal efficiency of Zn was 27%. Accordingly, it is feasible to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil using soil washing or flushing with HCI.
