Lab scale batch and column tests were performed to investigate the treatability of petroleum contaminated soil using the in-situ soil flushing method. The pyrex column (4.5$\times$25 cm) was used to investigate optimal washing agent, surfactant concentration, mixing ratio, and inlet velocity. The miked surfactant of $POE_{14}$ and SDS were determined as ideal systems for the batch tests. From the results of preliminary tests, mixed surfactant was found to be more harmful for microorganisms. So $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$ were chosen as the surfactant system for the batch study. The washing efficiency for the diesel contaminated soil was increased until 1 %, and decreased after l %. When applied as selected mixed surfactant, the ideal mixed ratio was recognized as 1:1. Therefore we selected miked surfactant $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$, surfactant concentration 1%, and mixed ratio 1:1 for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil. In column tests, the total removal efficiency was improved as the flux of washing agent was increased. At the same pore volume, small flux showed better removal efficiency.
Long chain alcohols, the mixtures of 1-hexadecanol/1-octadecanol, were used as cosurfactants for O/W emulsion prepared with glycerol monostearate/POE(100) monostearate mixed nonionic surfactants, and the phase behavior and flow properties of O/W emulsions were observed. The transition temperature of long chain alcohol was varied with the composition of 1-hexadecanol/1-octadecanol and had the lowest value when the mixed ratio of 1-hexadecanol/1-octadecanol was 2/1. The liquid crystalline phase was formed as the addition of long chain alcohol and the secondry droplet, the flocculate of the emulsion particles, was made, and thus the viscosity of the emulsion was increased. When the temperature of emulsion system was under the transition temperature of long chain alcohol, the mobility of hydrocarbon group of long chain alcohol was restricted, and thus gel structure was formed and the viscosity of the the O/W emulsion was increased, but along with the time, the liquid crystalline phase was disappeared and the viscosity of emulsion was decreased. Long chain alcohol/nonionic surfactants/water formed the liquid crystalline phase when the long chain alcohol was added above the saturation point of solution(2 wt% in this experoment), and the secondry droplet didn't formed when the long chain alcohol was added more than a certain amount (10 wt% in this experiment).
Block copolymers including ABA triblock architectures are useful as thermoplastic elastomers and toughened plastics depending on the relative glassy and rubbery content. These materials can be blended with other polymers and utilized as additives, toughening agents, and compatibilizers. Most of commercially available block copolymers are derived from petroleum. Renewable alternatives are attractive considering the finite supply of fossil resources on earth and the overall economic and environmental expenses involved in the recovery and use of oil. Furthermore, tomorrow's sustainable materials are demanding the design and implementation with programmed end-of-life. The present review focuses on the preparation and evaluation of new classes of renewable ABA triblock copolymers and also emphasizes on the use of carbohydrate-derived poly(lactide) or plant-based poly(olefins) having a high glass transition temperature and/or high melting temperature for the hard phase in addition to the use of bio-based amorphous hydrocarbon polymers with a low glass transition temperature for the soft components. The combination of multiple controlled polymerizations has proven to be a powerful approach. Precision-controlled synthesis of these hybrid macromolecules has led to the development of new elastomers and tough plastics offering renewability, biodegradability, and high performance.

The growth characteristics of Candida tropicalis KIST 359, isolated from soil samples collected at an oil depot in Korea, have been studied by cultivating batches under varying conditions. The conclusions of the study were: 1. The yeast easily assimilates hydrocarbons in a range of $C_{14}-C_{17}$, and the optimum cultivation temperature and pH are $30^{\circ}C$ and 5.5, respectively. 2. Using this strain of micro-organism, gas oil gives a higher cell yield than kerosine and with gas oil except urea all other nitrogen sources $(NH_4NO_3,\;NH_4Cl,\;(NH_4)_2SO_4\;and\;(NH_4)_2HPO_4)$ similarly support a satisfactory growth of the yeast. 3. The highest yield is obtained with a gas oil level of 10%(v/v), and concentrations of nitrogen source and $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ of 0.5 and 0.05%(w/v), respectively. 4. The protein content of dried yeast cells is 59.8%. Its amino acid composition can be compared well with that of FAO provisional patterns, but with a low methionine and a high lysine content.
As a part of basic investigation for utilizing by-products derived from marine food processing more effectively as a food source, lipid contents, fatty acid compositions and lipid compositions in viscera and head of conger eel and hair tail, viscera of mackerel pike, and squids caught off Newzealand and off Falkland island were determined. The lipid contents in marine by-products showed $40.5{\sim}48.0%$ on a dry weight basis and it consisted of $92.1{\sim}99.0%$ neutral lipid and $1.0{\sim}7.9%$ polar lipid such as phospholipid and glycolipid. The neutral lipids mainly consisted of triglyceride$(50.0{\sim}69.9%)$ and had free fatty acid, free sterol, esterified sterol and hydrocarbon, diglyceride, and monoglyceride in less quantity. Squid viscera oil showed higher content in polyenes such as 20:5 and 22:6 than by-product oil derived from fish processing. Viscera oil of squid caught off Newzealand(21.1%) was the highest on DHA composition, followed by that of squid caught off Falkland island(16.3%), hair tail by-product oil(13.9%), conger eel by-product oil(11.7%) and mackerel pike by-product oil(10.7%), in the order named. The major fatty acids in total lipid and neutral lipid of byproducts were generally 16:0, 18: 1n-9, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3.
The aim of this article is to assess the application characteristics of the site by remediating oil-contaminated area using DSB (Deep-site Biopile) system. In the contaminated area, the soil was composed of penetrable sand and the leaked oil was spread widely (total 7,201 cubic meters) through 2.5 meter deep underground water flow. DSB system was operated for 30 minutes intervals for 24 hours in a day (30 minutes opεration and 30 minutes stop). To check contamination level change in the contaminated area after DSB system was operated, samples were taken. The result from the site shows that BTEX/TPH contamination level was dropped 50% after 30-day operation of DSB system, and that contamination level was dropped below contamination level check standard after 165 days and the remediation was completed. Unlike traditional biological remediation methods DSB system could efficiently process soil and water which were contaminated by high levels of oil compounds.
Soil washing techniques coupled with high pressure air jet were applied for diesel-contaminated soils sampled by an underground oil reservoir of which the initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) ($2,828{\pm}206\;mg/kg$) exceeded 5 times of current standard level (500 mg/kg) regulated by the Soil-Environment Conservation Law. Through several tests, we found that the position of impeller has a critical impact for washing efficiencies. The highest washing efficiency was obtained at an oblique angle (30 degree) for the impeller and optimized mixing speed (300 rpm) that could have high shearing forces. Considered economical and feasible aspects, the optimum mixing time was 10 min. Rate constants of TPH removal derived from the first-order equation were not linearly increased as mixing speed increased, indicating that mechanical mixing has some limits to enhance the washing efficiencies. Application of high-pressure air jet in washing process increased the washing efficiency. This increase might be caused by the fact that the surface of micro-air bubbles strongly attached hydrophobic matters of soil particles. As the pressure of air jet increased, the separation efficiencies of TPH-contaminated soil particles increased. In the combined process of high-pressure air jet and mixing by impeller, the optimum mixing speed and air flow-rate were determined to be 60 rpm and $2\;kg/cm^2$, respectively. Consequently, the washing technique coupled with high-pressure air jet could be considered as a feasible application for remediating petroleum-contaminated soils.

The VOC (volatile organic compound) analyzer is devised to measure the four main aromatic hydrocarbon gases: toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and styfene. It is not affected by ambient temperature and humidity. In addition, standby and measuring time of VOC Analyzer is a short as below 30 min and 8 min, respectively. Since the semiconductor gas sensor is supersensitive to gas components, it is not necessary to use a conventional gas concentrator or other complicated equipment. In this study, VOC emission behavior from 4 types paints (lacquer, urethane vanish, water-base paint, enamel paint) for wood-based panel was investigated using VOC Analyzer. After a specimen was spreaded on aluminum foil ($6.32{\times}6.32cm$) in $3{\ell}$ polyester bag, after 24 hours we could measure maximum VOC emission level that is a stabilized VOC value. Xylene of VOCs was high emitted from lacquer, urethane vanish and water-based paint, and TVOC (Toluene + Ethylbenzene + Xylene + Styrene) of lacquer was the highest emission concentration than another.
Candle fires do not occur frequently, but can easily result in death. In this study, the thermal characteristics of candles and conditions and debris of candle fires were investigated to determine the causes of candle fires. The rates of decrease in weight of 10 candles were measured and found to be between 2.6 g/h and 6.7 g/h. Most candle fires are caused by the ignitiong of combustible materials close to them. The temperature near a candle ranges from about $200^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$ at a distance of 1 cm and low ignition temperature materials such as papers can easily catch fire. The melting temperature of candles ranges between $50^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ and their major chemical components are fatty acids and normal hydrocarbons (over C20). Using pretreatment conditions involving the use of activated charcoal strips at $150^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours, the fire debris including candle residues were analyzed using a Gas-chromatograph/Mass-spectrometer (GC/MS).
