  • The plate-type fuel assembly adopted in nuclear research reactor suffers from complicated effect induced by non-uniform irradiation, which might affect stress conditions, mechanical behaviors and thermal-hydraulic performance of the fuel assembly. This paper is the Part II work of a two-part study devoted to analyzing the complex unique mechanical deformation and thermal-hydraulic characteristics for the typical plate-type fuel assembly under irradiation effect, which is on the basis of developed and verified numerical thermal-fluid-structure coupling methodology under irradiation in Part I of this work. The mechanical deformation, thermal-hydraulic performance and Mises stress have been analyzed for the typical plate-type fuel assembly consisting of support plates under non-uniform irradiation. It was interesting to observe that: the plate-type fuel assembly including the fuel plates and support plates tended to bend towards the location with maximum fission rate; the hot spots in the fuel foil appeared at the location with maximum thickness increment; the maximum Mises stress of fuel foil was located at the adjacent location with the maximum plate thickness increment et al.

  • This study focused on the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of underwater tunnels based on Mohr-Coulomb (M-C), Hoek-Brown (H-B) and generalized H-B failure criteria. An improved approach for calculating stress, displacement and plastic radius of the circular tunnel considering hydraulic-mechanical coupling was developed. The innovation of this study was that the radius-incremental-approach was reconstructed (i.e., the whole plastic zone is divided into a finite number of concentric annuli by radius), stress and displacement of each annulus were determined in terms of numerical method and Terzaghi's effective stress principle. The validation of the proposed approach was conducted by comparing with the results in Brown and Bray (1982) and Park and Kim (2006). In addition, the Rp-pin curve (plastic radius-internal supporting pressure curve) was obtained using the numerical iterative method, and the plastic radius of the deep-buried tunnel could be obtained by interpolation method in terms of the known value of internal supporting pressure pin. Combining with the theories in Carranza and Fairhurst (2000), the improved technique for assessing the reliability of the tunnel support was proposed.

  • This paper presents the hydrodynamic design and performance analysis method for a miniaturized centrifugal blood pump using three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In order to obtain the hydraulically high efficient configuration of a miniaturized centrifugal blood pump for cardiopulmonary circulation, a well-established commercial CFD code was incorporated considering detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the blood pump system. A prototype of centrifugal blood pump developed by the present design and analysis method has been tested in the mock circulatory system. Predicted results by the CFD code agree very well with in vitro hydraulic performance data for a centrifugal blood pump over the entire operating conditions. Preliminary in vivo animal testing has also been conducted to demonstrate the hemodynamic feasibility for use of centrifugal blood pump as a mechanical circulatory support. A miniaturized centrifugal blood pump developed by the hydraulic design optimization and performance prediction method presented herein shows the possibility of a good candidate for intra and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary circulation pump in the near future.

  • BACKGROUND: Different physical and chemical properties of biochar, which is made out of a variety of biomass materials, can impact water movement through amended soil. The objective of this research was to develop a decision support tool evaluating the impact of the shape and the size distribution of biochar on soil saturated hydraulic conductivity ($K_{sat}$). METHODS AND RESULTS: Plastic beads of different size and morphology were compared with biochar to assess impacts on soil $K_{sat}$. Bead and biochar were added at the rate of 5% (v/w) to coarse sand. The particle size of bead and biochar had an effect on the $K_{sat}$, with larger and smaller particle sizes than the original sand grain (0.5 mm) decreasing the $K_{sat}$ value. The equivalent size bead or biochar to the sand grains had no impact on $K_{sat}$. The amendment shape also influenced soil hydraulic properties, but only when the particle size was between 3-6 mm. Intra-particle porosity had no significant influence on the $K_{sat}$ due to its small pore size and increased tortuosity compared to the inter-particle spaces (macro-porosity). CONCLUSION: The results supported the conclusion that both particle size and shape of the amended biochar impacted the $K_{sat}$ value.

  • In this paper, we have studied the images which have been reconstructed by using combination of images acquired by the variation of operating frequency. When inner images have been reconstructed, they have been superposed by the surface state effect. In this case, the images of the phase object can be enhanced by the contrast of inner images. There is a kind of specimen, one is a reference block having 1/4T, 1/2T, 3/4T side drilled holes as main run piping material of the steam generator in nuclear power plants. It has been shown that the two results of defect shapes have better than before in this processing and phase contrast grow about twice. And we have constructed the acoustic microscope by using a quadrature detector that enables to acquire the amplitude and phase of the reflected signal simultaneously. Further more we have studied the reconstruction method of the amplitude and phase images, the enhancement method of the defect images' contrast.

  • Subsea tunnels that link land to island and among nations for transportation, efficient development of limited surface and pursuit of economic development should be designed to support pore water pressure on the lining. It is generally constructed in the bed rock of the sea bottom. When the tunnel excavation face meets fractured-zones below sea bottom, collapse may occur due to an increase of pore water pressure and large inflow. Such an example can be found in the Norwegian subsea tunnel experiences in 1980's. In this study hydraulic behavior of tunnel heading is investigated using numerical method based on the collapse of Norwegian subsea tunnel. The effect of pore water pressure and inflow rate were mainly concerned. Horse-shoe shaped model tunnel which has 50 m depth from the sea bottom is considered. To evaluate hydraulic performance, parametric study was carried out for varying relative permeability. It is revealed that pore water pressure has increased with an increase of sea depth. Especially, at the fractured-zone, pore water pressure on the lining has increased significantly. Inflow rate into tunnel has also increased correspondingly with an increase in sea depth. S-shaped characteristic relation between relative permeability and normalized pore water pressure was obtained.

  • This paper considers the development of the dynamic analysis model and simulation-based operation safety estimation of A-Frame to be applied to the test evaluation support vessel for real sea test. The support vessel will be manufactured by modifying the existing offshore support vessel. Also, development and installation of various sensors and supporting facilities for test evaluation are under preparation. Among these facilities, A-Frame is an equipment that transfers marine equipment from ship deck to the sea floor, and is being designed to transfer up to 50 ton class equipment. However, the A-Frame is a moving equipment using hydraulic cylinders. When the 50 ton equipment is attached and transferred to A-Frame, the buckling of cylinders may occur or A-Frame becomes inoperable due to the influence of huge inertia. For this reason, safety verification should be performed using dynamic analysis techniques that can take into account huge inertia forces in the design of A-Frame. Therefore, in this study, A-Frame and ship behavior were modeled using dynamic analysis method, and the applied loads of various equipment including hydraulic cylinder of A-Frame was measured and the operation safety review was performed.

  • A CCTV inspection method has been widely used to assess sewer condition and performance, but Korea lacks a proper decision support system for prioritizing sewer repair and rehabilitation (R&R). The objective of this paper is to introduce the results that we have developed in the Sewer Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Decision-making (SCARD) Program using MS-EXCEL. The SCARD-Program is based on a standardized defect score for sewer structural and hydraulic assessment. Priorities are ranked based on risk scores, which are calculated by multiplying the sewer severity scores by the environmental impacts. This program is composed of three parts, which are decision-making for sewer condition and performance assessment, decision-making for sewer R&R priority assessment, and decision-making for optimal budget allocation. The SCARD-Program is useful for decision-makers, as it enables them to assess the sewer condition and to prioritize sewer R&R within the limited annual budget. In the future, this program logic will applied to the GIS-based sewer asset management system in local governments.
