  • This study examined the compressive strength development and pH values of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate(${\alpha}-CH$)-based binders developed for vegetation concrete with neutral pH between 6~7. Considering cost down and strength enhancement of the prepared binders, the ${\alpha}-CH$ was partially replaced by ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS), fly ash(FA), or ordinary Portland cement(OPC) by 25% and 50%. The compressive strength of mortars using 100% ${\alpha}-CH$ was 50% lower than that of 100% OPC mortars. With the increase of the replacement level of GGBS or FA, the compressive strength of ${\alpha}-CH$-based mortars tended to decrease, whereas the pH values were maintained to be 6.5~7.5. The main hydration products of ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with GGBS or FA were a gypsum($CaSO_4$), whereas portlandite($Ca(OH)_2$) was not observed in such binders. Meanwhile, the pH values of ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with OPC exceeded 11.5 due to the formation of $Ca(OH)_2$ phase as a hydration product. From the thermogravimetric analysis, the amount of $Ca(OH)_2$ in ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with OPC was evaluated to be approximately 10% of the cement content.

  • As a basic study for the application of natural zeolite as a concrete admixture, the compressive strength, activity factor, Ca(OH)2 quantitative analysis and XRD experiments were investigated. It is thought that SiO2, which is abundant in natural zeolite, affects the strength development by reacting with the hydration product of cement in all specimens in which natural zeolite was added according to powder level and substitution rate. As the substitution rate increases, the compressive strength decreases, which is considered to be due to the decrease in the amount of C3S and C2S minerals in the clinker, which affects the strength expression compared to the cement content of the reference mortar. The XRD crystal structure did not show a significant difference from the reference mortar, and it was confirmed that the Z2-10 (Blaine: 15,600㎠ / g) specimen with 10% substitution of natural zeolite was the best among the experimental levels. Substitution amount for use as concrete admixture is 10% substitution is most ideally seen.

  • Cement has been used as a main material in the modern construction industry. However, it has been pointed out as a main cause of global warming due to carbon dioxide generated during manufactured. Recently, research that replacing cement substitute to industrial by-products such as Blast Furnace Slag which is by-producted in steelworks. When Blast Furnace Slag is used as a cement substitute, it shows a problem of lower initial strength, which is caused by glassy membrane on the particle surface. In this study, we used Electrolysis Alkaline Aqueous to improve the usability and problem of lower initial strength. As a result of the experiment, cement matrix using Blast Furnace Slag and Alkaline Aqueous showed initial strength and hydrate product were developed than that using general mixing water. Also, as a result of porosity analysis, It was confirmed that cement matrix using Alkaline Aqueous and Blast Furnace Slag has a tighter structure in internal porosity and porosity distribution than using general mixing water.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the manufacturing process of non-sintered cement for the safe containment of radioactive waste using low level or ultra-low level radioactive waste soil generated from nuclear-decommissioning facilities, clay minerals, and blast furnace slag (BFS) as an industrial by-product recycling and to characterize the products using mineralogical and morphological analyses. A stepwise approach was used: (1) measuring properties of source materials (reactants), such as waste soil, clay minerals, and BFS, (2) manufacturing the non-sintered cement for the containment of radioactive waste using source materials and deducing the optimal mixing ratio of solidifying and adjusting agents, and (3) conducting mineralogical and morphological analyses of products from the hydration reactions of manufactured non-sintered cement solidifier (NSCS) containing waste concrete generated from nuclear-decommissioning facilities. The analytical results of NSCS using waste soil and clay minerals confirmed none of the hydration products, but calcium silicate (CSH) and ettringite were examined as hydration products in the case of using BFS. The compressive strength of NSCS manufactured with the optimum mixing ratio and using waste soil and clay minerals was 3 MPa after the 28-day curing period, and it was not satisfied with the acceptance criteria (3.44 MPa) for being brought in disposal sites. However, the compressive strength of NSCS using BFS was estimated to be satisfied with the acceptance criteria, despite manufacturing conditions, and it was maximized to 27 MPa at the optimal mixing ratio. The results indicate that the most relevant NSCS for the safe containment of radioactive waste can be manufactured using BFS as solidifying agent and using waste soil and clay minerals as adsorbents for radioactive nuclides.

  • This study aims to find methods that prevents aging of buildings paint coating and that limits defects in construction. Defects in painting can occur in four stages: pure paint, during painting, after the paint coating has dried, and after some period of time has passed after coating. Paint may become bad due to precipitation of pigments, formation of membranes, and seeding during manufacturing. Therefore, it is important that the paint is well mixed and kept airtight at a cool, dark place. Indents, paint brush strokes, orange peel, separation of colors, and paint running and spreading during the paint work process can be prevented by using high quality materials and applying a high-level of construction method. After the paint coating has dried, boiling, yellowing, poor drying, poor bonding, and/or glen deficiency may occur. These are influenced by the levels of cleanness of the dried product, drying temperature and hydration. Then, when the coating has been left dried for some period of time, cracking, peeling, scaling, swelling, discoloring, and/or rusting may develop due to the ultraviolet and contaminants in the air. Since these defects occur due to inappropriate construction schedule and/or hot and humid condition, one must use weatherproof materials. Furthermore, poor paint color may be caused by contamination in the sample plate, discoloration, and/or discrepancies in colors which are due to material differences, level of glossiness, degree of dispersion, dual color property of metallic colors, precipitation of pigments, etc. One should achieve reduction in construction cost and effectiveness in paint work by limiting contaminations in the construction site and strictly observing to construction regulations.

  • On the international provision on prohibition of ocean dumping of waste, tap water sludge has been buried or recycled on th low value added product as landfill. Due to the tap water sludge having high inorganic content, differing from the sewage sludge, it is possible to use as a usable resource by suitable process. We have studied on hydro thermal processing of tap water sludge with phosphoric acid and finally synthesize a artificial zeolite having a deodorization property. To use it as a building material, it has to be solidification. This study is on the properties of artificial zeolite synthsized and solidification properties by various types of solidifier. It is showed that the slaked lime is the best on setting property and its optimum content is 30-60 weight proportion. Solid by solidified by slaked lime has low strength and excellent deodorization performance, so it is possible to use as a functional pannel as gypsum board.

  • Recently, the interest is increasing about the eco-friendly concrete. Accordingly, the blast furnace slag(BFS), a by-product of industry is known for improving the durability through compaction in concrete and is expanding the use. The research about BFS in concrete be accomplished frequently. In this study, we should know the hydration characteristic of BFS concrete the through the adiabatic temperature rise test due to the replacement of a variety of BFS. In addition, we produced the regression analysis factors through the test result and analyzied the effect for the replacement of BFS. According to test results, the compressive strength showed a slight degradation or equal and the the adiabatic temperature rise figure and rising factors are went down for rising replacment of BFS. In the future, the study about the adiabatic temperature rise equation for the various replacement of BFS and binder is considered necessary.

  • The present study investigated the physical changes and reaction products with setting time after mixing of various mineral admixtures such as lime, hydrated lime, gypsum, kaolin, zeolite and diatomaceous earth with four types of cement (portland cement, slag cement, quick lime, hydrated lime) and clay rich sediments in soft foundation. As results, slag cement showed the greater compressive strength than normal portland cement. The mixing experiments with various mineral admixtures and slag cement resulted that gypsum showed the greatest compressive strength. Additionally, we conducted mixing experiments with various mixing ratios of gypsum and slag cement. The experiments showed that the mixing ratio of $30\%$ gypum and $70\%$ slag cement has the greatest compressive strength. Ettringite was produced as a reaction Product. This fact indicates that gypsum effectively promotes hydration reaction and contributed to the greater compressive strength. These experimental results can be used as fundamental data for the stabilization of soft clay foundation.

  • The optimum extraction of phenolic compounds from whole Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruits was accomplished using 70% ethanol, which produced extracts that generated a zone of inhibition around Helicobacter pylori of 13 mm when $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds were applied. In this study, the quality of white bread baked from dough containing added Rosa multiflora Thunberg extracts was investigated. No deterioration of product quality factors including hydration of wheat flour, formation of dough and internal visual characteristics of dough was observed. However, white bread containing Rosa multiflora Thunberg extracts had a wet texture because of the high moisture level, as well as a high number of irregular bubble holes when compared to the control. Nevertheless, there were no remarkable differences between the sample and the control.

  • This study was performed to evaluate void ratio, compressive and flexural strength, and pH properties according to the admixture ratio of rice husk ash, aggregate size, and neutral treatment time of porous concrete with an admixture of rice husk ash produced as an agricultural by-product. The SEM results for cement mortar with a 5% rice husk ash admixture for the weight of cement formed more C-S-H hydrates due to the $SiO_2$ present in the applied rice husk ash. According to the results of the SEM test, the $SiO_2$ that was a major chemical element of rice husk ash generated a large amount of calcium hydroxide in the early stage of the hydration process of cement leading to the formation of ettringite. The void ratio of porous concrete with an admixture of rice husk ash decreased with increasing admixture ratio of rice husk ash. In addition, the void ratio of porous concrete with an admixture of rice husk ash decreased compared to porous concrete with no admixture of rice husk ash. The compressive and flexural strength of porous concrete with a 5% and 10% admixture ratio of rice husk ash slightly increased compared to concrete with no admixture of rice husk ash. The pH value of porous concrete rapidly decreased immediately after neutral treatment. Then, it gradually increased and decreased again after 14 days. Also, for neutral treatment, the pH value of porous concrete showed appropriate pH levels(less than 9.5) in all mixtures for planting at 28 curing days.
