  • This paper presents a numerical model which can predict degree of cement mineral component, such as $C_3S$, $C_2S$, $C_3A$, $C_4AF$ and microstructure of hydrating cement as a function of water to cement ratio, cement particle size distribution, cement mineral components and temperature. In this model cement particles are parked randomly in cell space and hydration process is described using a multi-component intergrated kinetic model. The simulation result of degree of hydration of cement mineral component agrees well with experiment result. The content of cement hydration product, such as CSH and CH can be obtained as an accompanied result during hydration process. By introducing of equal-area projection method, water withdrawl mechanism and contact area among cement particles can be considered in detail. By using proposed method, pore size distribution of hydrating cement is predicted.

  • The early hydration characteristics according to the C3S/C3A ratio and presence of gypsum, in order to establish the hydration mechanism of the system C3S-C3A, have been studied. The rate of C3S dissolution in the system C3S-Gypsum was higher than that in the system C3S. Consequently, the induction period was reduced and the rate of Ca(OH)2 formation in the accleration period was increased. The hydration of C3S in the system C3S-C3A was retarded because Al3+ in the liquid phase originating from the hydration of C3A was incorporated into calcium hydrosilicates formed. The retardation phenomenon of C3S hydration was not appeared in the system C3S-C3A-gypsum because the reaction of monosulfate formation became the rate-determining step.

  • The concretes cast in the sea water would be likely to be rich mix and mass concrete. Therefore it is important to check out the hydration heat of concrete and to reduce it to prevent the concrete from processing the temperature crack. Recently the antiwashout agent is used on underwater concrete for preventing from the segregation of concrete in the water. The experimental studies were done for the combined cement replaced by fly ash 30%unit weight of binder to study on the characteristics of hydration heat of antiwashout underwater concrete, and its characteristic was discussed by comparing on cast in sea water with anther one in air. The present paper showed that the hydration heat concrete replaced by 30%of fly ash was more significantly reduced than the normal concrete. The hydration heat of antiwashout underwater concrete was highter than that of normal concrete, but it was reduced lower than the normal concrete by adding fly ash.

  • Length change, hydration heat, setting time and compressive strength of OPC were measured by adding KCl and replacing limestone powder so as to examine the influence of limestone powder on hydration of the OPC contained much chloride. In general, the chloride modified cement was high in heat of hydration, short in its setting time, low in its fluidity and low in its strength at 28 days due to the sudden hydration in its initial stage. As a result of the experiment, it has been demonstrated that heat of hydration, became low as one replaced limestone powder to the chloride modified cement, and the fluidity and shrinkage rate of mortar decreased without change in setting time; furthermore, the compressive strength at 28 days was improved.

  • When recycled aggregate with old mortar and particles is used in concrete mixing, such aggregates can affect hydration reaction by promoting or inhibiting it. In this study, the possibility of hydration reaction on old mortar and particle was analyzed. Hydration reaction was carried out in old mortar that is finely crushed by an impact machine in the production of recycled aggregates, and it was found that this did have an impact on the strength development of concrete. Unlike in old cement, the hydration reaction did not progress in the particles, and it had high amounts of silica powder and calcium carbonate. In conclusion, the old mortar can have the influence of improving compressive strength, but the particles can delay the setting time of recycled aggregate concrete.

  • The changes in the free energy and hydration free energy of N-acetyl-N'-methylalaninamide in the unhydrated and hydrated states were calculated with ECEPP/2 and the hydration shell model. The configurational entropy change of each conformation in both states were computed by a harmonic method. To understand the hydration structure of each hydrated conformation, the hydration-shell coordination numbers of functional. groups of the molecule were estimated from water-accessible volumes, and the contributions of water-accessible volume and polarization of each group to the hydration free energy were analyzed. The results show a reasonable agreement with those of recent theoretical studies and experiments.

  • In recent years, nano-reinforcing materials are widely utilized in cement composites due to their unique multifunctional properties. This study incorporated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the cementitious composites at ratios of 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%, and investigated their influence on the flowability, mechanical strength, and hydration heat properties. The addition of MWCNTs enhanced the compressive and split tensile strengths approximately by 18-51%. In the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, the internal hydration heat of the composites reduced by 5%, 9%, and 12% with the increase of MWCNTs in 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%. This study further performed hydration heat analysis and estimated the adiabatic temperature rise, thermal stress, and thermal crack index. The internal hydration heat of the concrete decreased by 5%, 10%, and 13% with the increase of MWCNTs. The thermal stress of the concrete decreased with increase in the addition of MWCNTs, and the obtained temperature crack index was effective in controlling the thermal cracks.

  • In this paper, we investigated the performance of synthetic graphene oxide-functionalized carbon nanotubes (GF) to promote cement hydration and increase the mechanical properties of cement paste. The enhancement effect of GF on the various properties of cement paste was evaluated via the mechanical strength, X-ray diffraction, and heat of hydration of cement paste. The results clearly showed that GF incorporation into cement paste promotes the early hydration of cement paste, generates more hydration products, which results in the mechanical improvement of cement paste. The compressive and splitting tensile strength were increased by 32.17% and 17.31%, respectively, compared to ordinary Portland cement at 28 days of hydration.

  • This study is tocompare and analyze the results of hydration heat analysis and on-field measurements using the method with hydration heat difference and insulation curing method for controlling hydration heat in mass concrete. As a result of the analysis, the temperature difference between the center and the surface was predicted very similarly, and the mass concrete surface was controlled to a safe level when evaluating with a temperature crack index, and after being finished, it was confirmed that there was no hydration crack.

  • Two kinds of clinker liquid melts, one containing 2.0% of $K_2O$ and the other without $K_2O$, were prepared with the similar composition as those developed during the firing of portland cement clinker. One portion of melt was quenched and found to consist of glass together with traces of proto-$C_3A$, and the other portion was allowed to cool spontaneously to crystallize $C_3A$ and calciumferrite well. The product obtained by crystallization of the melt without $K_2O$showed cubic $C_3A$, while orthorhombic $C_3A$ was formed from the crystallized product containing $K_2O$. Studies on the hydration behavior of the samples made from the melts with 30% of gypsum were carried out for 24 hours by observation at regular intervals ettringite, monosulphate hydrates and gypsum which were formed or consumed during hydration. The samples without $K_2O$ in the melts were hydrated wth addition of proper amount of $K_2SO_4$ in the water for hydration. Hydration behavior of glassified $C_3A$ showed that it has low reactivity relative to crystallized $C_3A$, and also hydration reactivity of orthorhombic $C_3A$ was much lower than that of cubic $C_3A$ in 60 minutes. Potassium sulphate in the solution reduced the hydration reactivity of $C_3A$ . Evolution peaks of hydration heat examined by twin-type conduction micro-calorimeter showed that glassified $C_3A$ without $K_2O$ had secondary peak after 9 hours and $C_3A$ containing $K_2O$ after 12 hours. When crystallized $C_3A$ was hydrated, initial peaks of hydration heat were considerably high and there was no secondary peak for cubic $C_3A$ but the secondary peak of orthorhombic $C_3A$ appeared after 4 hours.
