  • Background: Physicians tend to overcorrect when applying the acellular dermal matrix for reconstructive option because of volume decrement problem after absorption comparing with initial volume. However, there are no studies on the exact volume decrement and absorption rate with commercial products in South Korea. To figure out absorption rate of acellular dermal matrix product in South Korea (Megaderm), authors designed this experiment. Methods: Nine mice were used and randomly divided into three groups by the time with sacrificing. The implant (Megaderm) was tailored to fit a cuboid form ($1.0cm{\times}1.0cm$ in length and width and 2.0 mm in thickness). A skin incision was made at anterior chest with blade #15 scalpel with exposing the pectoralis major muscle. As hydrated Megaderm was located upon the pectoralis major muscle, the skin was sutured with Ethilon #5-0. After the surgical procedure, each animal group was sacrificed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks, respectively, for biopsies and histological analysis of the implants. All samples were stained with routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and Masson's trichrome staining and the thickness were measured. A measurements were analyzed using Friedman test. Statistically, the correlation between thicknesses of Megaderm before and after implantation was analyzed. Results: After sacrificing the animal groups at postoperative 4, 8, 12 weeks, the mean tissue thickness values were $2.10{\pm}1.03mm$, $2.17{\pm}0.21mm$, and $2.40{\pm}0.20mm$ (p= 0.368), respectively. The remaining ratios after absorption comparing with after initial hydrated Megaderm were 82.7%, 85.4%, and 94.5%, respectively. In histopathological findings, neovascularization and density of collagenous fiber was increased with time. Conclusion: Author's hypothesis was absorption rate of implant would be increased over time. But in this experiment, there is no statistical significance between mean absorption thickness of implant and the time (p= 0.368). Also it can be affected by graft site, blood supply, and animals that were used in the experiment.

  • Three inexpensive oxidation reagents, namely pyridinium chlorochromate, chromium trioxide-dipyridine and nicotinium dichromate were utilized for oxidation of carbohydrates in 78-92% yield. Hydration could be eliminated in the oxidation of pentopyranosides and hexopyranosides, while pentofuranosides had a tendency to be easily hydrated during the oxidation. In the carbon-13 n. m. r. study, the carbonyl function resulted from the oxidation affected on the chemical shifts of $\alpha$- and $\beta$-carbons of methyl 3. 4-O-isopropylidene-$\beta$-D-arabinopyranosid-2-ulose (8) and 1,2 : 4, 5-di-O-isopropylidene-$\beta$-D-erythro-2, 3-hexodiulo-2, 6-pyranose (10) to slightly down fields (0.7-2.6 p. p. m.) compared with the chemical shifts before oxidation. While the carbonyl groups of 1. 2-O-isopropylidene-5-O-ethyloxycarbonyl-$\alpha$-D-erythro-pentofuran-3-ulose (4) and methyl 3, 5-0-isopropylidene-$\alpha$-D-threo-pentofuranosid-2-ulose (6) pushed the $\alpha$-carbons to up fields (3, 2-18.3 p. p. m. However, the order of signals on the spectra before and after oxidation remained unaltered.

  • The roasting of pyrite with a cyclone reactor have been studied in terms of investigating the reaction behavior of pyrite. The development of a fundamental model for pyrite oxidation and lime sulfation in a vertical cyclone reactor. The model assumes a chemical control shrinking core behavior for the pyrite and a fluid film control shrinking core behavior for the lime. The oxygen and sulphur dioxide concentrations and the energy balance for the gas, pyrite and lime particles are solved. The model was solved and characterized numerically. Experiments have been performed to study the influence of reaction parameters such as reactor temperatures, pyrite particle sizes, air flow rates, feeding rates, and mixing ratio of pyrite and lime. The oxidation and sulfation products were characterized chemically and physically.

  • In this paper, we have developed a simple, new and economical carbonation method to synthesize a pure form of aragonite needles using dolomite raw materials. The obtained aragonite Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) was characterized by XRD and SEM, for the measurement of morphology, particle size, and aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter of the particles). The synthesis of aragonite PCC involves two steps. At first, after calcinated dolomite fine powder was dissolved in water for hydration, the hydrated solution was mixed with aqueous solution of magnesium chloride at $80^{\circ}C$, and then $CO_2$ was bubbled into the suspension for 3 h to produce aragonite PCC. Finally, aragonite type precipitated calcium carbonate can be synthesized from natural dolomite via a simple carbonation process, yielding product with average particle size of $30-40{\mu}m$.

  • This study focused on the investigation of durability of latex modified concrete in the points of surface scaling resistance as cement types variated and latex content variated such as 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. An increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength, but with slightly lower compressive strength. The increase in flexural strength might be attributed to the latex films between the hydrated cement and aggregates, and the decrease in compressive strength to the flexibility of the latex component named by Butadiene. The surface scaling resistance test was used to evaluate the durability of latex-modified concretes and rapid setting latex-modified concretes. The surface scaling resistance of LMC was quite good comparing to conventional concrete. Further, surface scaling resistance of RSLMC was improved with increasing the latex content.

  • Density functional theory calculations are applied to investigate the intramolecular proton transfer in the tautomers of thymine radical cation and its hydrated complexes with one water molecule. The optimized structures and energies for 6 tautomers and 6 transition states of thymine radical cation are calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. It is predicted that the order of relative stability for the keto and enol tautomers of thymine radical cation is the same with that of the neutral thymine tautomers, though the enol tautomers are more stabilized with respect to the di-keto form in the radical cation than in the neutral state. A new channel of proton transfer from >C5-$CH_{3}$ of thymine is found to open and have the lowest energy barrier of other proton transfer processes in thymine radical cation. The roles of hydration are also investigated with thymine-water 1 : 1 complex ions. The presence of water significantly lowers the barrier of the proton transfer, which clearly shows the assisting role of hydration even with one water molecule

  • Drying shrinkage cracking which may be caused by the relatively large specific surface is a matter of grave concern for latex modified concrete(LMC) overlay and rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) overlay. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to study the drying shrinkage properties of LMC and RSLMC with the main experimental variables such as cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid setting cement), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), W-C ratios, and curing days at a same controlled environment of 60% of relative humidity and $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature. Test results revealed that the drying shrinkage of latex modified concrete(LMC), rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete(RSLMC) was considerably lower than that of ordinary portland cement concrete(OPC), rapid-setting cement concrete(RSC), respectively. This may be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic and colloidal properties of the latexes, resulting in reduced water evaporation.

  • This study focused on the investigation of strength development and permeability of LMC(Latex Modified Concrete) and RSLMC(Rapid-Setting Cement Latex Modified Concrete) as the latex content, cement types and w/c ratio changed. The compressive strength of latex modified concrete decreased slightly and the flexural strength increased quitely at 15% of latex content. This may be due to the flexibility of latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, respectively. The permeability test results showed that the permeability of LMC was considerably lower than that of conventional concrete. Results of chloride permeability test, for RSLMC indicated very low at an early age caused by the early formation of needle-shape ettringites and latex film.

  • In this work, we describe a novel and simple technique to produce non-hydrate surfactant complexes for the formation of highly crystalline fatty acid modified SPIONs by thermolysis of iron oleate (FeOl) complexes in a non-coordinating solvent. FeOl complexes were prepared by direct coordination of iron ions and carboxylic acid; thus, we could control the stoichiometric composition of the precursor by changing the molar ratio of fatty acid and metal ions. The discrete thermal behaviors and chemical coordination of the intermediate non-hydrated FeOl were studied by thermo-analytic techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

  • Alkali metal salts were introduced to enhance the ionization efficiency of glucose and maltooligoses in electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A mixture of the same moles of glucose, maltose, maltotriose, maltotetraose, maltopentaose, maltohexaose, and maltoheptaose was used. Salts of lithium, sodium, potassium, and cesium were employed as the cationizing agent. The ionization efficiency varied with the alkali metal cation types as well as the analyte sizes. Ion abundance distribution of the [M+$cation]^+$ ions of the carbohydrates varied with the fragmentor voltage. The maximum ion abundance at low fragmentor voltage was observed at maltose, while the maximum ion abundance at high fragmentor voltage shifted to maltotriose or maltotetraose for Na, K, and Cs. Variation of the ionization efficiency was explained with the hydrated cation size and the binding energy of the analyte and alkali metal cation.
