For efficient transmission and storage of digital images, the requirements of image compression is incresing. Because the medical images contain diagnostic information small distortion has been more important factor than the low rate in such images. Generally the distortion in image is the difference of pixel values. However the image is percieved by human visual systems. So it is reasonable that human visual system characteristics be used as criteria of the image compression. In this paper, the Just Noticeable Difference curve is used as criteria of determining the homogeniety of a block and acceptibility of distortions. And Block Truncation Coding using spatial masking effect of eyes is adopted to code the blocks which contain line components. And small blocks which varies slowly can be approximated to polynomial functions successfully. We proposed the hybrid block coding scheme based on the block characteristics and human visual system characteristics. Simulation to several kinds of the medical images using this method showed that medical images can be compressed 5:1 - 10:1 without noticeable distortion.

In this paper, two interference suppression schemes (LCCMA, HIC) applied to the MC-CDMA system were proposed. The proposed schemes have advantages that it don't requires the other's spreading code and can be used even in mobile. The proposed HIC combines the proposed interference suppressor with PIC. Simulation is performed in various environments using the Monte Carlo method. Simulation results show that there is 1.4~3 times capacity increase in corresponding simulation environments. Also this scheme can take advantage of path diversity whereas the system using EGC, MRC, and PIC cannot. Therefore, as the number of path increase, a considerable performance improvement can be attained.
Advances in wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have enabled small and low-cost sensors with the capability of sensing various types of physical and environmental conditions, data processing, and wireless communication. In the WSN, the sensor nodes have a limited transmission range and their processing and storage capabilities as well as their energy resources are limited. A triple umpiring system has already been proved for its better performance in WSNs. The clustering technique is effective in prolonging the lifetime of the WSN. In this study, we have modified the ad-hoc on demand distance vector routing by incorporating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based dynamic clustering. The proposed scheme, which is an efficient and secure routing protocol for wireless sensor networks through SNR-based dynamic clustering (ESRPSDC) mechanisms, can partition the nodes into clusters and select the cluster head (CH) among the nodes based on the energy, and non CH nodes join with a specific CH based on the SNR values. Error recovery has been implemented during the inter-cluster routing in order to avoid end-to-end error recovery. Security has been achieved by isolating the malicious nodes using sink-based routing pattern analysis. Extensive investigation studies using a global mobile simulator have shown that this hybrid ESRP significantly improves the energy efficiency and packet reception rate as compared with the SNR unaware routing algorithms such as the low energy aware adaptive clustering hierarchy and power efficient gathering in sensor information systems.
In density-based topology optimization, 0/1 solutions are sought. Discrete topological problems are often relaxed with continuous design variables so that they can be solved using continuous mathematical programming. Although the relaxed methods are practical, grey areas appear in the optimum topologies. SIMP (Solid Isotropic Microstructures with Penalization) employs penalty schemes to suppress the intermediate densities. SRV (the Sum of the Reciprocal Variables) drives the solution to a 0/1 layout with the SRV constraint. However, both methods cannot effectively remove all the grey areas. SRV has some numerical aspects. In this work, a new scheme SIMP-SRV is proposed by combining SIMP and SRV approaches, where SIMP is employed to generate an intermediate solution to initialize the design variables and SRV is then adopted to produce the final design. The new method turned out to be very effective in conjunction with the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) when using for the stiffness topology optimization of continuum structures for minimum compliance. The numerical examples show that the hybrid technique can effectively remove all grey areas and generate stiffer optimal designs characterized with a sharper boundary in contrast to SIMP and SRV.

A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.

The conventional fixed gain PI controller is very sensitive to step change of command speed, parameter variation and load disturbances. The precise speed control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drive becomes a complex issue due to nonlinear coupling among its winding currents and the rotor speed as well as the nonlinear electromagnetic developed torque. Therefore, there exists a need to tune the PI controller parameters on-line to ensure optimum drive performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This paper is proposed hybrid intelligent-PI(HIPI) controller of IPMSM drive using adaptive learning mechanism(ALM) and fuzzy neural network(FNN). The proposed controller is developed to ensure accurate speed control of IPMSM drive under system disturbances and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. The PI controller parameters are optimized by ALM-FNN at all possible operating condition in a closed loop vector control scheme. The validity of the proposed controller is verified by results at different dynamic operating conditions.

The Multichannel Analyzer for Transient and steady-state in Rod Array - Liquid Metal Reactor for Flow Blockage analysis (MATRA-LMR-FB) code for the analysis of a subchannel blockage has been developed and evaluated through several experiments. The current version of the code is improved here by the implementation of a distributed resistance model which accurately considers the effect of flow resistance on wire spacers, by the addition of a turbulent mixing model, and by the application of a hybrid scheme for low flow regions. Validation calculations for the MATRA-LMR-FB code were performed for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) 19-pin tests with wire spacers and Karlsruhe 169-pin tests with grid spacers. The analysis of the ORNL 19-pin tests conducted using the code reveals that the code has sufficient predictive accuracy, within a range of 5 $^{\circ}C$, for the experimental data with a blockage. As for the results of the analyses, the standard deviation for the Karlsruhe 169-pin tests, 0.316, was larger than the standard deviation for the ORNL 19-pin tests, 0.047.

Increasing energy prices and growing concerns about global warming address the need to improve energy self-sufficiency in many industrial and municipal sectors. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are representative of energy-consuming facilities in Korea, accounting for 5% of national energy consumption. We present renewable energy technologies and energy self-sufficiency scenarios in a municipal WWTP ($30,000m^3d^{-1}$) located in Yongin, South Korea. By employing photovoltaics (PV, 135 kW), small hydropower turbine (10 kW), and thermal energy from treated effluent (25 RT: refrigeration ton) within the WWTP, a total of 142 tonne of oil equivalent (toe) of energy was estimated to be generated, accounting for $365ton\;CO_2\;yr^{-1}$ of greenhouse gas emission reduction. Core renewable technologies under consideration include 1) hybrid solar PV system consisting of fixed PV, dual-axis PV, and building integrated PV, 2) low-head small hydropower plant specifically designed for treated effluent, 3) effluent heat recovery system for heating and air conditioning. In addition to these core technologies, smart operation and management scheme will be presented for enhancing overall energy savings and distribution within the WWTP.

The attractive features of photosynthetic reaction center proteins for energy application make them useful in solar energy conversion to hydrogen fuel or electrical energy. Almost unity charge separation quantum yield and its rapid speed of ~1ns, absorbance region in visible light (480~740 nm) and high proportion of photosynthetically active solar energy of 48.5% allowed photosystem1 to exploited as a bio-material for photo-energy devices. Directionality of photosystem1 in electron transfer can solve main problem in two-step water splitting process where back reaction deteriorates the overall efficiency. In the study, photosystem1 was extracted from spinach and the photo-induced excited electron in the reaction center was utilized in various field of light energy application. First, hydrogen evolving system realized by photodeposition of platinum at the end of the electron transfer chain, with combining specific semiconductor to oxidize water in the first step of Z-scheme. The evaluation by gas-chromatography demonstrated hydrogen evolution through the system. For the further application of photoelectrical material on electrode, photosystem1 have been controlled by copper ion, which is expected to assemble photosystem in specific orientation followed by maximized photoelectrical ability of film. The research proposed concrete methods for combining natural protein and artificial materials in one system and suggested possibility of designing interface between biological and inorganic materials.
