The machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is featured by tremendous number of devices, small data transmission, and large uplink to downlink traffic ratio. The massive access requests generated by M2M devices would result in the current medium access control (MAC) protocol in LTE/LTE-A networks suffering from physical random access channel (PRACH) overload, high signaling overhead, and resource underutilization. As such, fairness should be carefully considered when M2M traffic coexists with human-to-human (H2H) traffic. To tackle these problems, we propose an adaptive Slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) hybrid protocol. In particular, the proposed hybrid protocol divides the reserved uplink resource blocks (RBs) in a transmission cycle into the S-ALOHA part for M2M traffic with small-size packets and the TDMA part for H2H traffic with large-size packets. Adaptive resource allocation and access class barring (ACB) are exploited and optimized to maximize the channel utility with fairness constraint. Moreover, an upper performance bound for the proposed hybrid protocol is provided by performing the system equilibrium analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with pure S-ALOHA and pure TDMA protocol under a target fairness constraint of 0.9, our proposed hybrid protocol can improve the capacity by at least 9.44% when ${\lambda}_1:{\lambda}_2=1:1$and by at least 20.53% when ${\lambda}_1:{\lambda}_2=10:1$, where ${\lambda}_1,{\lambda}_2$ are traffic arrival rates of M2M and H2H traffic, respectively.
To provide interactive sonics in HFC(Hybrid Fiber Coax)-CATV network, there must be supported a MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol. It is wet known that collision can be occurred in the HFC upstream channel because it is shared by up to 500 users. Thus it needs the collision resolution algorithm. Consequently, this paper proposes the analysis mood to study stability of binary stack algorithm for adaptive collision resolution algorithm in HFC-CATV. Also, it compares a system throughput between IPP model and D-BMAP model.
This paper presents a terminal-assisted frame-based packet reservation multiple access (TAF-PRMA) protocol, which optimizes random access control between heterogeneous traffic aiming at more efficient voice/data integrated services in dynamic reservation TDMA-based broadband access networks. In order to achieve a differentiated quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee for individual service plus maximal system resource utilization, TAF-PRMA independently controls the random access parameters such as the lengths of the access regions dedicated to respective service traffic and the corresponding permission probabilities, on a frame-by-frame basis. In addition, we have adopted a terminal-assisted random access mechanism where the voice terminal readjusts a global permission probability from the central controller in order to handle the 'fair access' issue resulting from distributed queuing problems inherent in the access network. Our extensive simulation results indicate that TAF-PRMA achieves significant improvements in terms of voice capacity, delay, and fairness over most of the existing medium access control (MAC) schemes for integrated services.

In this paper, a slotted CDMA_ALOHA protocol with hybrid ARQ is proposed for the wireless CDMA communication networks. The proposed protocol combines the characteristics of the slotted ALOHA, CDMA, and the hybrid ARQ, in order to increase the throughput by reducing the number of retransmissions when the channel experiences heavy traffic. The main feature of the proposed protocol is the utilization of the forward error correction capability to correct errors that appear after the CDMA dispreading of the packets. The base station does not need to ask so often for retransmission of erroneous packets. It will request for retransmission only when the FEC capability is exceeded. The performance of the proposed protocol is analyzed by considering the packet collision probability as well as the bit error probability. The numerical results show that the system throughput is closely related to the bit error rate of the wireless link and the FEC coding rate.

The DCF (Dcistributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function) are the basic MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. According to the DCF, each node performs the exponential backoff algorithm before the transmission of its data frame. Each node doubles the backoff waiting time before the transmission of its data frame whenever it detects the transmission collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes having the data frames to transmit increases, the overall MAC performance of the DCF decreases. On the other hand, according to the PCF, each node is granted the transmission opportunity by which the PCF transmission is possible without the collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes increases, the MAC performance of the PCF increases, In this paper, considering the tradeoff of MAC performance between the DCF and PCF, a hybrid MAC protocol is proposed to enhance the performance of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.

In this paper, we introduce a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective switchless wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network based on a quality-of-service supporting reservation-based medium access control (MAC) protocol. The protocol not only provides both packet and circuit switching but also supports multicasting. The network efficiency is significantly increased by spatially reusing wavelengths and exploiting multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) employed in the architecture. We have demonstrated the feasibility of this architecture by simulating in $Optsim^{TM}$.

It is well-known that the cooperative communication and error control technology can improve the network performance, but most existing cooperative MAC protocols have not focused on how to cope with the contention process caused by cooperation and how to reduce the bad influence of channel packet error rate on the system performance. Inspired by this, this paper first modifies and improves the basic rules of the IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to optimize the contention among the multi-relay in a cooperative ARQ scheme. Secondly, a hybrid ARQ protocol with soft combining is adopted to make full use of the effective information in the error data packet and hence improve the ability of the receiver to decode the data packet correctly. The closed expressions of network performance including throughput and average packet transmission delay in a saturated network are then analyzed and derived by establishing a dedicated two-dimensional Markov model and solving its steady-state distribution. Finally, the performance evaluation and superiority of the proposed protocol are validated in different representative study cases through MATLAB simulations.

Bidirectional cable TV networks using HFC(Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) networks need MAC (Medium access control) protocols to have efficient access in upstream channels. In this paper, we have studied and evaluated several contention resolution algorithms and mapping of higher layer traffic described in IEEE 802.14 and MCNS (Multimedial Cable Network System) MAC protocols with respect to IP, ABR and CBR traffic types. IEEE 802.14 MAC protocol demonstrates better performance for transmitting ATM cells while the MCNS MAC protocols for the IP traffic.

The study aims at offering a solution to the problems of transmission delay and data throughput decrease as the number of contending On-Board Units (OBU) increases by applying CSMA medium access control protocol based upon IEEE 802.11p. In a competition-based medium, contention probability becomes high as OBU increases. In order to improve the performance of this medium access layer, the author proposes EDCA which a adaptive adjustment of the Contention Windows (CW) considering traffic density and data type. EDCA applies fixed values of Minimum Contention Window (CWmin) and Maximum Contention Window (CWmax) for each of four kinds of Access Categories (AC) for channel-specific service differentiation. EDCA does not guarantee the channel-specific features and network state whereas it guarantees inter-AC differentiation by classifying into traffic features. Thus it is not possible to actively respond to a contention caused by network congestion occurring in a short moment in channel. As a solution, CWminAS(CWmin Adaptation Scheme) and ACATICT(Adaptive Contention window Adjustment Technique based on Individual Class Traffic) are proposed as active CW control techniques. In previous researches, the contention probabilities for each value of AC were not examined or a single channel based AC value was considered. And the channel-specific demands of IEEE 802.11p and the corresponding contention probabilities were not reflected in the studies. The study considers the collision number of a previous service section and the current network congestion proposes a dynamic control technique ACCW(Adaptive Control of Contention windows in considering the WAVE situation) for CW of the next channel.
