  • A magnetic levitation system with hybrid magnets, which is composed of permanent magnets and electromagnets, consumes less power than the conventional attraction type system. In this paper, we propose PID controller and PID-Fuzzy controller for hybrid magnet. We first present "constant gap" control technology with PID controller.   • Optimization of an electric machine is mainly a nonlinear multi-modal problem. For the optimization of the multi-modal problem, many function calls are required with much consumption of time. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm in which function calls are less than conventional methods. Specifically, the proposed method uses the kriging metamodel and the fill-blank technique to find an approximated solution in a whole problem region. To increase the convergence speed in local peaks, a parallel gradient assisted simplex method is proposed and combined with the kriging meta-model. The correctness and usefulness of the proposed hybrid algorithm is verified through a mathematical test function and applied into the practical optimization as the cogging torque minimization for an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine.

  • A new permanent magnet biased hybrid maglev actuator is developed. Compared to the classical hybrid maglev actuators, the new maglev has unique flux paths such that bias fluxes are separated with control flux paths. The control flux paths have minimum reluctances only developed by air gaps, so the currents to produce control fluxes can be minimized. The consumed power to operate this maglev system can also be minimized. The gravity load can be compensated with the static magnetic forces developed by the permanent magnet bias fluxes while external disturbances are controlled with the bidirectional AC magnetic forces developed by control fluxes by currents. 1-D circuit model is developed for this model such that the flux densities and magnetic forces are extensively analyzed. 3-D finite element model is also developed to analyze the performances of the maglev actuator.

  • A new hybrid permanent magnet biased magnetic levitation actuator (maglev) is developed. This new maglev actuator is composed of two C-core electromagnetic cores separated with two permanent magnets. Compared to the conventional hybrid maglev actuators, the new actuator has unique flux paths such that bias flux paths are separated with control flux paths. The control flux paths have minimum reluctances only developed by air gaps, so the currents to produce control fluxes can be minimized. The gravity load can be compensated with the permanent magnet bias fluxes developed at off-centered air gap positions while external disturbances are controlled with control fluxes by currents. The consumed power to operate this levitation system can be minimized. 1-D magnetic circuit model is developed for this model such that the flux densities and magnetic forces are extensively analyzed. 3-D finite element model is also developed to analyze the performances of the maglev actuator.

  • In this paper, the performance design and analysis for an Interior Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) that will be used as a traction motor in the e-4WD system of hybrid SUV(Sports Utility Vehicle) and RV(Recreational Vehicle), are investigated using finite element method. In order to improve the accuracy of design, the tolerances of parts and assemblies as well as the material properties of permanent magnet, stator, rotor and winding etc. are considered under the conditions similar to real driving state of motor. Both no load performance test and maximum load performance test, in which real driving state and cooling condition have been considered, are also implemented via proto sample build to verify the validity of motor's performance design.

  • Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) have advantages over other types of energy storage methods due to their infinite charge/discharge cycles and environmental friendliness. The system has two radial bearings and one hybrid-thrust bearing. Thrust hybrid-type bearing use permanent magnet to relieve gravity load. The radial bearings were designed to provide sufficient force slew rate considering the unbalance disturbance at the operating speeds. In this paper, we will derive dynamic model of hybrid-type bearing using permanent magnet for thrust bearing and present simulation and stability of the model.

  • In this paper, a design method for minimizing the cogging torque of an Interior Permanent Magnet Motor (IPM) is proposed based on a hybrid algorithm. The suggested optimization algorithm is based on a combination of the Response Surface Method (RSM) and Simplex Method. The results show that the proposed method provides improved characteristics compared to the conventional methods, such as a shorter calculation time and the acquisition of a more correct solution.

  • In this paper, hybrid electromagnets using NdFeB permenant magnet are designed by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Four hybrid magnets levitate the carrier of which total weight including control circuits and battery is 14[kg]. The nominal air gap length of the hybrid magnet is 3[mm]. The control circuit consists of DSP, 4-quadrant chopper, and gap sensor as feedback sensors. As a result, some experimental results for the magnetic levitation control by PI feedback control theory are shown.

High Coercive Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets for High Temperature Application

  • Various sintered magnets containing $28{\sim}31\;wt%$ Nd and $0{\sim}7\;wt%$ Dy were evaluated for coercivity and irreversible flux loss as a preliminary study to develop highly-coercive, high-temperature magnets that can be applied for driving motors in a hybrid vehicle. The sintered magnets were prepared in sequence of strip casting, HD treatment, jet milling, magnetic field pressing, sintering and post-annealing. Increasing Dy content and adjusting post-annealing temperature monotonically increased coercivity of magnets from about 14 kOe to 30 kOe. A magnet containing 28 wt% Nd and 7 wt% Dy exhibits a $(BH)_{max}$+$_i{H_c}$ value of almost 64. This is very close to what the automobile industry considers as the minimum value (65) for a hybrid vehicle system. Moreover, irreversible flux loss of the magnet was about 3% at $200^{\circ}C$, which is well less than the allowable limit (5%) to a driving motor in hybrid vehicles.
