  • A hybrid cutting using both plasma and end mill was developed for safe and efficient dismantling of nuclear facilities. In this cutting method, a moving arc plasma heats up the workpiece before milling. Thermally softened part of the workpiece is then removed quickly and deeply with an end mill. For the cutting experiments, a three-axis numerical control (NC) milling machine was combined with a commercialized arc plasma torch and used to cut 25 mm thick stainless steel plates. Experimental results revealed that pre-heating by arc plasmas can improve the cutting volume per unit time higher than 40% by reducing the cutting load and increasing the cuttable depth when using an end mill without cutting fluids. These advantages of a hybrid cutting process are expected to contribute to quick and safe segmentations of metal structures with radioactively contaminated inner surfaces.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cutting frequency on dry matter yield and nutritive value between heading and headless varieties of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid in 1998. Treatments were var. TE hay grazer(heading type) and Jumbo(headless type) as main plot, and 1, 2, and 3 cutting times per a year as sub plot. Although plant height of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments, headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type, and both of variety decreased with 1, 2, and 3 cutting times in order. Also, dry matter yield of sorghum~sudangrass hybrid was no significant difference between heading and headless type. Dry matter yield of first cutting plot in heading type and in headless type was the higher than those of second and third cutting plot. Acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber of headless type were slightly higher than that of heading type. Acid detergent fiber of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was highest at first cutting plot in both varieties. Neutral detergent fiber of second cutting plot in heading type and first cutting plot in headless type were the highest respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility of headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type. And in vitro dry matter digestibility of second cutting plot was the highest in both varieties. In vitro digestible dry matter of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments. The results demonstrated that although there was not significant difference, cultivation of headless type and first cutting plot per a year were very good for nutritive value and DM yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid as summer forage crops in Korea. • Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the practicality and the validity of different surface treatments of self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) by comparing bone cutting capacity and osseointegration. Methods: Self-drilling OMIs were surface-treated in three ways: Acid etched (Etched), resorbable blasting media (RBM), partially resorbabla balsting media (Hybrid). We compared the bone cutting capacity by measuring insertion depths into artificial bone (polyurethane foam). To compare osseointegration, OMIs were placed in the tibia of 25 rabbits and the removal torque value was measured at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after placement. The specimens were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results: The bone cutting capacity of the etched and hybrid group was lower than the machined (control) group, and was most inhibited in the RBM group (p < 0.05). At 4 weeks, the removal torque in the machined group was significantly decreased (p < 0.05), but was increased in the etched group (p < 0.05). In the hybrid group, the removal torque significantly increased at 2 weeks, and was the highest among all measured values at 8 weeks (p < 0.05). The infiltration of bone-like tissue surface was evaluated by SEM, and calcium and phosphorus were detected via EDS only in the hybrid group. Conclusions: Partial RBM surface treatment (hybrid type in this study) produced the most stable self-drilling OMIs, without a corresponding reduction in bone cutting capacity.

  • Field experiment was carried out to study the new and old leaf development and photosynthesis of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid 855F, pearl millet Suwon No.6 and barnyard millet in cutting and non-cutting plots from the 2nd cutting day(September, 17th). Leaf regrowth of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and pearl millet begun after the 2nd cutting day, except barnyard millet. Photosynthetic rate of new leaf blades in cutting plots reached to higher level than old leaf at 12th to 20th day after cutting(DAC). Stomatal density of leaf blade of each crop in non-cutting plot was observed higher pearl millet and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid than barnyard millet. New leaf blade of each crop in cutting plot was showed complete development in stomata size, form and vascular bundles in 12th DAC. Non-structural carbohydrates(NSC) contents of stembase in sorghum-sudan hybrid which had 17 %, the highest among three forages decreased daily into 8th DAC and begun to increase from 20th DAC. But, those of pearl millet and barnyard millet in cutting plots were about 10 % at cutting day and inclined to decrease continuously into the 20th DAC and reached about 3~4% in 32nd DAC. These results showed that regrowth energy of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was mainly dependent on non-structural carbohydrates of stembase until 12th DAC, but pearl millet had active lower leaves supported its regrowth by concurrent photosynthesis. As barnyard millet which did not reserve enough NSC, its regrowth fail to survive under low temperature. Also, late regrowth of rest two forage crops was delayed with decreasing daily temperature after mid-September.

  • An FFD(flexible fine die) is an embossed mold that consists of a thin plate ranging from 0.6 to 3 mm in thickness. FFDs are primarily used for cutting LCD films and F-PCB sheets. In the high-speed micro-milling process of flexible fine dies, the lubrication and cooling of the cutting edges is very important from the aspect of eco machining and cutting performance. In this paper, a comparative study of tool wear and surface roughness between cutting fluid and hybrid lubrication for eco-machining of FFD was conducted for processes of high-speed machining of highly hardened material (STC5, HRC52). Especially, the incorporated fluid method for eco machining, in which the cutting performances can be simultaneously measured, was introduced. The machining results show that hybrid lubrication, instead of conventional cutting fluid, leads to excellent tool wear and surface roughness and represents the proper conditions for eco micro-machining of flexible fine dies.

  • In this study, we conducted the preliminary research for high speed laser cutting of LED module. In particular, the feasibility of ultra-high speed laser cutting of 100 mm/s which exceeds the cutting speed of conventional dicing saw was examined. For this, copper/ceramic and silicone/ceramic hybrid substrates, which are the components of the LED module, were fabricated, and the surface morphology, surface roughness and flexural strength of the laser-cut samples were investigate and compared with the dicing-cut samples. To investigate optimal laser cutting conditions for hybrid substrates, the effects of various laser cutting conditions on cutting surface characteristics were studied using single ceramic and copper substrate. Optimal laser cutting conditions of the hybrid substrates were the use of Ar assist gas, high laser power and high assist gas pressure. Comparing the cutting surface of the hybrid substrates, the surface characteristics of the laser-cut samples are slightly inferior to those of the dicing-cut samples. The average surface roughness of the laser-cut samples was about $9{\mu}m$, and that of the dicing-cut samples was about $4{\mu}m$. However, considering very low cutting speed (3 mm/s) of the dicing saw, the surface morphology of the laser-cut sample was relatively uniform, and the surface roughness was not much different from that of the dicing-cut sample. The flexural strength of the laser-cut samples was equivalent to or slightly inferior to the flexural strength of dicing-cut samples. However, if the laser processing conditions are sufficiently optimized, the ultra-high speed laser cutting of the LED module will be possible.

  • The problem of generating torch paths for 2D laser cutting of a stock plate nested with a set of free-formed parts is investigated. The objective is to minimize the total length of the torch path starting from a blown depot, then visiting all the given Parts, and retuning back to the depot. A torch Path consists of the depot and Piercing Points each of which is to be specified for cutting a part. The torch path optimization problem is shown to be formulated as an extended version of the standard travelling salesman problem To solve the problem, a hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed. In order to improve the speed of evolution convergence, the algorithm employs a genetic algorithm for global search and a combination of an optimization technique and a genetic algorithm for local optimization. Traditional genetic operators developed for continuous optimization problems are used to effectively deal with the continuous nature of piercing point positions. Computational results are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • Geometric cutting-simulation and verification play an important role in detecting NC machining errors in mold & die manufacturing and thereby reducing correcting time & cost on the shop floor. Current researches in the area may be categorized into view-based, solid-based, and discrete vector-based methods mainly depending on workpiece models. Each methodology has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of computing speed, representation accuracy, and its ability of numerical inspection. The paper proposes a hybrid modeling scheme for workpiece representation with z-map model and discrete vector model, which performs 3-axis and 5-axis cutting-simulation via tool swept surface construction by connecting a sequence of silhouette curves.
