This study is performed to examine the non-destruction properties of the Hwangtoh mortar. The absorption ratio is in the range of $8.25%{\sim}18.16%$, it tend to increase with increase using the stone dust and Hwangtoh. The pulse velocity and dynamic modulus at the curing age 7 and 28days are in the range of $2,290m/s{\sim}4,140m/s,\;2,976m/s{\sim}4,219m/s\;and\;105{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2{\sim}293{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2,\;137{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2{\sim}318{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, respectively. They tend to decrease with increase using the stone dust and Hwangtoh.
In this paper, the applicability of Hwangtoh, as an alternative of cement paste, is investigated for the solution of internal heat and shrinkage caused by the hydration of cement paste. Several small-sized specimens of Hwangtoh and ordinary portland concrete (OPC) were compared as to compressive strength, heat of hydration, and shrinkage strain. Moreover, the applicability to the construction structures was reviewed through the test of large-size specimens. The 28-day compressive strength of Hwangtoh concrete (HBC), ranged 18 to 33 MPa, can reach that of OPC. Not only the maximun internal temperature of HBC was read about 1/4 of OPC as it is cured, but also its shrinkage decreased more than the OPC did. Therefore, Hwangtoh binder is more favorable than cement binder in terms of its hydration heat and shrinkage under the construction of concrete.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of variations in the mix rate of PVA fiber and the replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh on non-sintering Hwangtoh mortar and concrete mixed with PVA fiber. For water to binder ratio, mortar and concrete were both 50%, and PVA fiber mix rate was 0% and 0.3%. The replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh was 0, 25, 50 and 75(%) for mortar, and 0, 15, 30 and 50(%) for concrete. The properties of the mortar and concrete were compared and analyzed in 4 different levels, and the results can be summarized as follows. The replacement ratio of 30% of the non-sintering Hwangtoh, and the PVA fiber mix rate of 0.3% is determined to result in concrete of high quality, including strength and fluidity, and crack control by plastic shrinkage.

This work aims to suggest the most proper Hwangtoh color(ocher) for sidewalks and walkways located at the central part of the city. The actual colors of Hwangtoh samples that were obtained from 3 different locations (mountain walkways) in Busan were measured. In addition, personal preferences of such Hwangtoh colors were evaluated through survey in order to provide a proper standard reference color for urban walkways and sidewalks. With respect to the chromaticity of Hwangtoh obtained in Busan, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were found to range from 3.6 to 13.6 and 11.4 to 23.4, respectively. It was also found that $L^*$ (lightness) values of 3 different Hwangtoh samples were found to be similar. According to the results from survey, higher values of $+a^*$ (red type) and $+b^*$ (yellow type) were preferred, indicating the red and yellow color needs to be developed stronger from Hwangtoh. Based on these findings, the proper Hwangtoh color used for walkways in urban area was chosen. It was found to be $L^*$ for 32.2~45.8, $a^*$ for 5.2~13.6, and $b^*$ for 15.8~21.2, respectively.

Hwangtoh is the rich resource that accounts for about 15.0% of the domestic soil, and can be used as the admixture of concrete with Pozzolan characteristics if activated by rapidly freezing after burning with high temperature. In this study, the mortar curbs containing active hwangtoh were produced, based on the mixture for the mortar curbs sold on the market. The substitution rate of active hwangtoh were considered 10.0% and 25.0%, and the test items were selected to compressive and flexural strength tests, freezing/thawing resistance tests, accelerated carbonation tests, and accelerated chloride diffusion tests. In the results of the mechanical performance, it was showed that the highest strength was evaluated in OPC mixture, and the increase in strength was small by the increase of age, which was believed to be due to the fact that most of the strength in each mixture was created in three days of steam curing. The results of the freezing/thawing tests for 28 aged days showed the reduction rate of compressive strength was 85.0% or higher for all specimen, meeting the criteria presented. The accelerated carbonation tests were carried out on the specimen at 28 days of age, and the results showed that the mortar with active hwangtoh had lower carbonation resistance performance than mortar with OPC. The passed charge of each mixture was assessed in accordance with ASTM C 1202 on 28 and 91 aged days. The OPC mixture had "Low" rate and the mortar with active hwangtoh had "Moderate" rate. So it was thought that the mortar with active hwangtoh had appropriate resistance performance for chloride attack.

In this study, possible use of indigenous natural loess (Hwangtoh) as a new binding material via geopolymerization process is examined. Hwangtoh pastes with four different mix proportions of varying alkali liquid concentrations (6 M, 8 M) and the constituents of the binder as well as the alkali liquid at a constant liquid-to-binder ratio of 0.55 were prepared. Analysis of the natural loess (Hwangtoh) paste was carried out as follows : 1) Measurement of compressive strength and weight of cubic specimens versus curing time; 2) Analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) about reaction product; 3) Porosity analysis of hardened Hwangtoh paste. The result showed that it is possible to prepare Hwangtoh paste with 29.1 MPa at the age of 7 day by using alkali solution (made as 1 : 4.5 the mass ratio of liquefied $Na_2SiO_3$ and NaOH solution and applying the curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$). Compressive strength development with respect to the degree of moisture evaporation from the paste seems to be independent of curing temperature. Therefore, it seems that higher early strength of the paste specimens cured at higher temperature can be attributed to both higher rate of reaction and moisture evaporation.

In this study, the physical and chemical properties of mortar are evaluated by micro-analysis, taking into account the substitution rate(20%, 30%, and 40%) of zeolite with porous properties and active hwangtoh. First, the physical and chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh are reviewed to confirm that the specific surface area of those is similar with ordinary portland cement, and the main chemical composition is SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, etc.. So, it is thought that they have the properties of pozolan reactive materials. As the results of the strength test considering the amount of substitution based on that of cement, It is confirmed that strength decreases with the increase of the replacement amount of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and the strength of mortar with replacement rate of 20% is higher than OPC mortar. It is confirmed that the amount of porosity is increased due to chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and in particular, the size of the pore is greater than 1㎛ in mortar mixed with active hwangtoh.

The purpose of this study was to analyze mechanical properties through an experiment of concrete that reinforced PET fiber, blast furnace slag and Hwangtoh. As admixture that is substitute material of cement for environmental concrete development In order to measure compressive strength, the experiment has executed to concrete, Hwangtoh concrete and a mixture specimen of Hwangtoh and PET reinforcement fiber. Also, creep and drying shrinkage experiment have executed to analyze long-term quality of specimens. Test results, compressive strength by age was not much of difference as a substitute, however, compressive strength of HTC specimen was the strongest of the three specimens. In the case of creep and drying shrinkage, long-term quality of HTC specimen was distinguished.
For the development of the environment-friendly insulating composite materials, natural cellulose (wood chip and sawdust) was used as a core material and activated Hwangtoh was used as a binder. Various specimens were prepared with the water/binder ratio and natural cellulose/binder ratio. The physical properties of these specimens were then investigated through compressive and flexural strength test, absorption test, hot water resistance test, thermal conductivity, measurement of pore distribution and observation of micro-structures using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that the absorption ratio increased with the increase of natural cellulose/binder ratio but decreased remarkably with the increase of polymer/binder ratio. The compressive and flexural strength development varied appreciably with the increase of water/binder ratio and natural cellulose/binder ratio. On the other hand, thermal conductivity decreased with the increase of natural cellulose/binder ratio and polymer/binder ratio. Through SEM, it was found that activated Hwangtoh that reacted with water formed a hydrate crystal leading to the compact structure and the total pore volume of the specimen using activated Hwangtoh was smaller than that of the non-activated Hwangtoh.

Many studies have been conducted with respect to the materials to replace the cement in order to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions during the cement production. Activated hwangtoh as cement replacement material goes through calcination process of $850^{\circ}C$. PVA fibers and GFRP bars are used in order to compensate for the cracks of activated hwangtoh concrete(AHC). This paper presents an experimental study investigating the bond characteristic of GFRP bars in PVA fiber reinforced AHC under tensile loads. Experimental results showed that average bond strength factor of specimens with and without PVA fiber was 2.27~2.48 and was not significantly affected by the ratio of PVA fiber andactivated hwangtoh. In addition, as the bond length was increased, the bond strength was reduced.
