  • The purpose of this study is to find out a way to apply the strength of American homeowners association to Korean housing management system through literature review on the legal basis, organizational composition and functions, and management models of homeowners association. Following is distinctive characteristics of American homeowners association. 1) Homeowners association is a juridical entity which 'Condominium Act' obliges residents to join. 2) The board of directors is decision maker. The covenant, however, gives residents right to act in committees. 3) Homeowners association has self-governing functions such as management of common spaces, permission of new construction and taxation. 4) Types of management are volunteers' self-management, association-employed management, full agency management, and some mixed types. Residents pay management charge by month or by quarter. This study suggests as follow. 1) It is needed for Korea to legislate the law to regulate the management system of detached houses. 2)Management system of Korea can be more efficient with volunteers' committees for active participation. Above all, architectural control committee is essential in the circumstance that reform of apartment is popular these days. 3) The management entity is recommended to have some self-governing function to talk about taxation policy with local governments.

  • An advance d and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for determination of omeparzole in human plasma has been developed. After omeprazole was extracted from plasma with diethylether, the organic phase was transferred to another tube and trapped back with 0.1 N NaOH solution. The alkaline aqueous layer was injected into a reversed-phase C8 column. Lansoprazole was used as an internal standard. The mobile phase consisted of 30% of acetonitrile and 70% of 0.2 M $ KH_{2}PO_{4}$, pH 7.0. Recoveries of the analytes and internal standard were >75.48%. The coefficients of variation of intra- and inter-day assay were <5.78 and 4.59% for plasma samples. The detection limit in plasma was 2 ng/ml. The clinical applicability of this assay method was evaluated by determining plasma concentration-time courses of the respective analytes in 24 healthy volunteers after oral administration 40 mg of omeprazole. The present assay is considered to be simple, accurate, economical and suitable for the study of the kinetic disposition of omeprazole in the body.

  • Oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC) is known to be a sensitive and simple method to determine total antioxidant capacity(TAC) in biological samples. While TAC has received great attention with its relation to pathogenesis in the progression of several diseases, little is known about association of ORAC with metabolic risk factors. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between ORAC and serum lipid profiles, fasting glucose and anthropometric measures. One hundred seventeen volunteers participated in the study. Perchloric acid treated serum was used to determine $ORAC_{pca}$. Mean$ORAC_{pca}$ of subjects whose serum total cholesterol(TC) concentrations were $\geq$ 200 mg/dl was significantly(P < 0.05) higher than that of subjects whose TC concentrations were < 200mg/dl. There were significantly positive correlations between $ORAC_{pca}$ and serum concentrations of TC(P < 0.05) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol(P < 0.01). The positive relation between cholesterol concentrations and $ORAC_{pca}$ in serum may suggest an elevated TAC against oxidative stress associated with the cardiovascular risk factors. • Propentofylline (PPF, 3-methyl-1-(5-oxohexyl)-7-propylxanthine) has been reported to be effective for the treatment of both vascular dementia and dementia of the Alzheimer type. The pharmacological effects of PPF may be exerted via the stimulation of nerve growth factor, increased cerebral blood flow, and inhibition of adenosine uptake. The objectives of this experiment are to determine the kinetic behavior of PPF, to identify, and to quantify its metabolite in human. Blood samples were obtained from human volunteers following oral administration of 200mg of PPF tablets. For the identification and quantification of the metabolite, 3-methyl-1-(5-hydroxyhexyl)-7-propylxanthine (PPFOH), PPFOH was synthesized and identified by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) and $^1H$-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The molecular weight of synthesized metabolite is 308 dalton. The PPF and PPFOH in plasma were extracted with diethyl ether and identified by electron impact GC/MS. The plasma concentrations of PPF and PPFOH were determined by gas chromatography/nitrogen phosphorus detector in plasma and their pharmacokinetic parameters were determined. The mean half-life of PPF was 0.74 hr. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of PPF and PPFOH were 508 and 460ng.hr/ml, respectively. $C_{max}$ of PPF was about 828.4ng/ml and the peak concentration was achieved at about 2.2 hr ($T_{max}$). These results indicate that PPF is rapidly disappeared from blood due to extensive metabolism into PPFOH.

  • This study analyzed appropriate equipment combination for emergency recovery after flood disasters and proposed an alternative approach for economic and rapid emergency recovery based on the utilization of human resources who have practical experience in construction business and in equipment operation. The current countermeasures and response to flood disaster including emergency procedures and methodologies are investigated and related legal framework was also analyzed. Currently, some emergency recovery works are over payed and delayed due to unclear and inefficient processes on equipment and human resources mobilization during and after flood disasters, particularly in local governments. Best practices in mobilizing equipment and human resources were compiled, theoretical foundation was investigated and analyzed, and improved emergency recovery schemes were proposed for effective flood disaster countermeasures in local government. Prioritization in equipment and human resources mobilization was also proposed considering equipment transportation distance and accessability to disaster sites. This study also proposed improved ways to utilize experts in local areas in supporting community emergency response volunteers for disaster risk management.

  • Bile salt hydrolase (BSH, EC 3.5.1.24) activity, which cleaves amide bond between carboxyl group (bile acid) and amino group (glycine or taurine), is commonly detected in gut-associated species of human and animal. During the screening of BSH active strains from the fecal samples of elderly human volunteers, strain CU30-2 was isolated on the basis of the highly active BSH producing activity. A bsh gene of the isolate was cloned into the pET22b expression vector and overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) Gold by induction with 1mM IPTG. The overexpressed BSH enzyme with 6x His-tag was purified with apparent homogeneity using a $Ni^+$-NTA agarose column and characterized. The BSH enzyme of E. faecalis CU30-2 exhibited approximately 50 times higher activity against glycol-conjugated bile salts than tauro-conjugated bile salts having the highest activity against glycocholic acid. Considering the prevalence of E. faecalis strains in the human GI tract and glycol-conjugates dominated bile acid composition of human bile, further study is needed to investigate the impact of the BSH activity exerted by E. faecalis strains to the host as well as to the BSH producing strains.

  • This study was aimed to establish analytical method of Bi to develop a guideline of the bioequivalence test of tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate (TDB). For this purpose, a simple, specific and sensitive inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) method were developed and validated in human plasma. Various concentrations of bismuth standard solution (0-25ng/mL) were prepared with distilled water and human blank plasma. To 10mL of the volumetric flasks, 2mL of blank plasma was added with 8ml of distilled water. Bi standard solution was added to prepare the calibration samples and injected into ICP-MS. The plasma samples obtained from volunteers given 3 tablets of bismuth (total 900mg as TDB) were analyzed as described above. As a result, the coefficients of variation were <20% in quantitation limit (0.2 ng/mL) and <15% at the rest of concentrations. The stability test by repeated freezing-thawing cycles showed that the samples were stable only for 24hr. The stability tested for samples with a short-term period of storage at room temperature and pre-treatment prior to the analysis showed very stable over 24hr. In 8 healthy Korean subjects received Denol tablets at the dose of 900mg bismuth, AUC, $C_{max},\;T_{max}$ and half-life $(t_{1/2})$ were determined to be $198.33{\pm}173.78 ng{\cdot}hr/mL,\;64.48{\pm}27.06 ng/mL,\;0.52{\pm}0.21 hr,\;and\;5.15{\pm}2.67 hr$, respectively, from the plasma bismuth concentration-time curves. In conclusion, the method was suitable for the determination of bismuth in human plasma samples and could be applied to bioequivalence test of bismuth tablet.

  • Safety study of the continuous releasing dichlorvos-resin insecticide $(Mopari^{\circledR})$ was conducted in human volunteers and domestic fowls. For the purpose, the potential hazards in using the insecticide were observed in terms of the inhibition of plasma cholinesterase activity and the changes in the liver function (GOT, GPT, Alkaline phosphatase, Bilirubin, Thymol turbidity), the blood picture (RBC, WBC with differential count, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit and ESR) and the urine picture (sugar, albumin, pH and microscopic findings) in 40 healthy adult volunteers and 60 leghorn domestic fowls. In case of the human study the observation was continued for 2 months during the application of the insectiside ($1{\sim}3$ solid formulations/$30m^3$) in the living rooms of ordinary Korean dwelling houses or in the office. In the animal test, however, 1 to 5 solid formulations of the insecticide were applied in the fowl cage of $9.2m^3$ for 5 weeks. Any significant inhibition of the plasma cholinesterase activity was not observed in both the human volunteer and the fowl throughout the experimental period. And the liver function as well as the blood and urine pictures were also not changed after exposure to the vaporizing insecticide. It is considered from the result that the amount of dichlorvos released into the air by the continuous vaporizing dichlorvos-resin insecticide presents no significant hazardous effect on humans or animals in the present experimental condition.

  • Hospice can not only help the dying persons to maintain the high quality of life and facing the death in comfortable and peaceful state, but also the bereaved family to relieve the grief and sufferings. We investigated the work of hospice performed by church base from March 2000 until recently and reported the results dividing them into three parts. 1)The application of resources in church to administration, education, nursing delivery of hospice in the aspects of management. 2)Spiritual and postmortal management relating hospice nursing and funeral in hospice practice. 3)Case report of hospice and the patients situation(5 in average a month). The expected effects of hospice practice using the resources in church are as follows. 1)Hospice practice can provide the highly qualified persons with the opportunities to do voluntary services and find their lives worth living. Consequently hospice contributes to the spreading of the volunteering culture. 2)The volunteers in hospice can grow mature spiritually and get interpersonal relationships among the volunteers. Doyle. D., Geoflrey.W.C., & Macdonald. N.(1988). Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine(2nd ed). New York :Oxford University Press. Woodruff. R.(1996). Palliative Medicine(2nd ed). Melburn: Asperula Pty Ltd. 3)Through the hospice activity, church can practice and show the moral. 4)The volunteers in hospice can make a organization with a hope to be a beautiful community in church. 5)The patients and their families can enjoy the high quality of life through the holistic care provided by 33 nursing practical items of hospice. 6)'Hospice newsletter' can be a useful vehicle to provide readers with hope and encouragement through the stories of the patient and the volunteers. The persons unaware of the hospice can be contacted with hospice by this 'Hospice newsletter'. 7)Irrespective of the economic status, all patients are served equally that hospice can contribute to dying with dignity and the equality of human being.
