In one case of housing construction for the elderly in Japan, there was no level difference in the interior. Two bedrooms were provided for the husband and the wife, because of the difference of time to bed. The sunroom for enjoying the outside of the nature was provided. • It is identified that an initial person who built of 'Seoul Gyedong Modernized Hanok(former Min Hyeong-gi house)' used as 'Bukchon Culture Center' in present, was not Min Hyeong-gi, but his wife, Yu Jin-gyeong, and she built it when 8 years went on after his death(1879~1973), and the construction year was at the gate of Chuseok in 1921. Yu Jin-gyeong was Head Family's Eldest Daughter-in-law in family of Yeo Heung-min who was an influential person at the late Joseon Dynasty and was widow who had only son for 3 generations. And she built this house and moved to gain daughter and live futher grandchilds together in law in new nest. It is arranged that an annex surrounds with main building as the central figure. And this house emulates Yeonkeong-dang in backyard of the Changdeok Palace for 'preservation of main building' and Chim-bang-ga-toe applied on a bedroom in a palace is applied around nobleman family's the main room. It is rare case and expresses that a palace factor is borrowed. Yu Jin-gyeong's house is that a tradition Hanok is adjusted closely in city and central and basing mode as 'protective bedding' and building concept as 'a noble and protective architecture' is realized. So it has a character that development of Hangrang architecture is appeared and Head Family's Eldest Daughter-in-law widow of modern upper class had a special benefit. As well as, a meaning that it is experimental house based on tradition and is build of Hanok with housekeeping as the central figure for appear a form which has minimal Hangrang for housekeeping in yangban family of modern city, can be found.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand various styles of Korean house living, up to the present, to identify apartment living as the main house living, and plan and propose the interior unit spaces for apartment house based on the analysis on living space. A survey study was conducted to deduce the traditional major life style and its changes along with favorable housing spaces. In conclusion, this study proposed the unit space planning requirements that satisfies the conceptual and interior elements for habitant's characteristics and preference according to major life style as follow; 1) As the Ahn-bang(master bed room) has been changed from traditional space concept, it is mainly used as private space for husband and wife, and its utilized period is mostly at night time, the back-arrangement of the Ahn-bang should be considered. 2) As the living room is central space in the apartment housing and has complex functions which is utilized as space for family gathering and guest reception similar to the Ahn-bang of the traditional house, it should secure more space and it is desirable to arrange the space as open type by combining the pathway area. 3) As for the kitchen/dining room, the kitchen should be isolated from external attraction and the space for storing and preparing traditional foods should also considered, and the dining room should be arranged as open type. This study also suggests that since the apartment housing must be an integrated environment for habitants which satisfy behavioral, physical and mental elements simultaneously, the unit housing space should be constantly analyzed in various ways to produce a housing space which meet both their changing major life style and the temporal environment.

  • This study surveyed features of weddings in the main family by selecting 10 families in which the grandnephew and grandnephew's wife dwell in the head house, have a shrine, and hold a memorial service for Bulcheonwi (不遷位). A case survey through in-depth interview was carried out from April 9, to October 8, 2011. It surveyed the contents and the wedding artifacts in Uihon (議婚), Napchae (納采), Nappye (納幣), Daerye (大禮), Hyeongugorye (見舅姑禮), which are the procedures of traditional wedding that have been kept in the wedding ceremony of the main family. As a result, in deciding on marriage, the marriage was formed on the basis of similar Gagyeok (家格) and on ancestor's common scholastic mantle or origin. As for wedding furnishings, wedding presents, and wedding gifts, 9 out of 10 families were indicated to give and take weakly. Also, 6 out of 10 families held a traditional wedding ceremony in the yard of the bride's house. Hyeongugorye (見舅姑禮) was indicated to be held by all of the 10 families. A continuous effort in academic circles and industries is demanded for preserving the living culture of the main family, which proceeds with following the traditional elements even amid a rapidly-changing historical flow as today.

  • Yungneung is the royal tomb of King Jangjo (the Crown Prince Sado, 1735~1762) and his wife, Hyegyeonggung-the Lady Hong (1735~1815). King Jangjo was the second son of the 21st King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. The tomb of King Jangjo was originally established at Yangju near Seoul in 1762 and moved to Whaseong near Suwon in 1789. We examined tree-ring (dendrochronological) dates of Jeongjagak, the ceremonial hall and Bigak, the tombstone house of Yungneung. We obtained tree-ring dates of 54 wood elements. The dates of bark rings were A.D. 1785, 1786, and 1787 with completed latewoods. These tree-ring dates were well matched with the historically recorded date of two buildings, A.D. 1789 when two or three year-storage after cutting logs was considered. The results indicated that the present buildings of Yungneung was built when the royal tomb of King Jangjo was moved from Yangju to Suwon. A historical record about the construction of Yungneung, 'Hyeonyungwon-eugye' confirmed the majority of woods was moved from 'Manrichang', an official storage office in Seoul through Han river and Yellow Sea to Suwon.
