During the past five decades or so, the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow have been studied extensively because of its great technological and scientific importance. It is well known that the swirling flow improves heat transfer in duct flow. The reason for this is due to the effect of streamline curvature associated with the tangential velocity component. Although many studies have been carried out to investigate the characteristics of the swirling flow in a circular tube. The experimental methods for measuring the velocity components are by hot-wire or LDV (Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry) measuring single point velocity so far. The present study was aimed to analyse the flow characteristics of swirling flow such as time-mean velocity vector, local velocity turbulence intensity and turbulence kinetic energy by using PIV(Particle-Image Velocimetry). The experiment was carried out for four Reynold numbers $1.0\times10^{4}$, $1.5\times10^{4}$, $2.0\times10^{4}$ and $2.5\times10^{4}$ of the measuring area.
Chemical application, one of the most important crop management processes happened to cause spray drift, that would threaten farmers in field as well as dwellers in rural region. Spray drift was affected by micro-meteorological parameters. A study to evaluate short distance drift characteristics of a boom sprayer in paddy fields has been undergoing. This study is the first step of the research. Main purpose of the was conducted to develop a mean wind profile and to get information on turbulence intensities above and within rice canopy. Wind in rice paddy field were measured at every 10cm from 10 to 180cm above the ground using a 2-dimensional probe and a hot wire anemometer system. Main results were summarized as follows. 1. Mean wind profile was modeled as; Equations. see full-text 2. Roughness length and zero-displacement in rice canopy were analyzed to be respectively 0.04 and 0.7∼0.72 times of the canopy height. The values are smaller comparing to those of other crops because rice canopy is flexible and uniform comparing to other crops. 3. Turbulence intensities (Tl) was greater as close to the ground and became constant at heights greater than 1.5Hc. where Tl’s were 0.4 and 0.15 in horizontal and vertical direction respectively.
The local wall shear stress in transitional boundary layer was estimated from the near-wall mean velocity data using the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method(CPM). The previous DNS and experimental databases of transitional boundary layers were used to demonstrate the accuracy of the method and to provide the applicable range of wall unit y(sup)+. The skin friction coefficients predicted by the CPM agreed well with those from previous studies. To reexamine the applicability of CPM, near-wall hot-wire measurement were conducted in developing transitional boundary layers on a flat plate with different freestream turbulence intensities. The intermittency profiles across the transitional boundary layers were reasonably obtained from the conditional sampling technique. An empirical correlation between the representative intermittency near the wall and free parameter K$_1$of the extended wall function of CPM has been newly proposed using the present and other experimental data. The CPM has been verified as a useful tool to measure the wall shear stress in transitional boundary layer with reasonable accuracy.

The experimental study is carried out to identify the combustion generated noise mechanism in free turbulent jet diffusion flames. Axial mean fluctuating velocities in cold and reacting flow fields were measured using hot-wire anemometer and LDv.The overall sound pressure level and their spectral distribution in far field with and without combustion were also measured in an anechoic chamber. The axial mean velocity is 10-25% faster and turbulent intensities are about 10 to 15% smaller near active reacting zone than those in nonreacting flow fields. And sound pressure level is about 10-20% higher in reacting flow fields. It is also shown that the spectra of the combustion noise has lower frequency characteristics over a broadband spectrum. These results indicate that the combustion noise characteristics in jet diffusion flames are dominated by energy containing large scale eddies and the combusting flow field itself. Scaling laws correlating the gas velocity and heat of combustion show that the acoustic power of the combustion noise is linearly proportional to the 3.8th power of the mean axial velocity rather than 8th power in nonreacting flow fields, and the SPL increases linearly with logarithmic 1/2th power of the heat of combustion.

0The fields of turbomachinery and electrical generators provide many examples of flow through rotating internal passages. At the practicing Reynolds number, most of the flow motion is three dimensional and highly turbulent. The proper understanding for the characteristics of these turbulent flow is necessary for the design of thermo-fluid machinery of a good efficiency. The flow characteristics in the rotating duct with curvature are very complex in practice due to the curvature and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure of turbulence in the curved passage and the characteristics of the flow in a rotating radial straight channel have been well studied separately by many workers. But the combined effects of curvature and rotation on the flow have not been well understood inspite of the importance of the phenomena in the practical design process. In this study, the characteristics of a developing turbulent flow in a square sectioned 90.deg. bend rotating at a constant angular velocity are measured by using hot-wire anemometer to seize the rotational effects on the flow characteristics. As the results of this study, centrifugal forces associated with the curvature of the bend and Coriolis forces and centripetal forces associated with the rotational affect directly both the mean motion and the turbulent fluctuations.
The use of flux cored arc welding(FCAW) process has grown dramatically since it has been developed because of the remarkable operating characteristics and the resulting weld properties. The feature that distinguishes the FCAW process from other arc welding processes is the enclosure of fluxing ingredients within a continuously fed tubular electrode. The benefits of FCAW process are the increased productivity due to continuous wire feeding, the metallurgical effects derived from the reactions with flux, and the shapes of weld bead formed by slag. However, FCAW process causes the problem in working environment because it generates much more fume than other welding processes. Recently, the welding fume became a hot issue in the field after some welders were diagnosed as manganese toxcosis and siderosis. This study was started to investigate the characteristics of welding fume and utilize the results from the investigation to protect the welders from welding fume. As a first step, the effect of welding conditions on the fume generation rate(FGR) were investigated during FCAW process with $CO_2$ shielding. The considered welding conditions were welding current, arc voltage, travel speed, contact tube to work distance, and torch angle. The results showed that FGR was affected by all of these factors.
A cylindrical constant-volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at the spark electrode gap and the combustion characteristics of an inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters such as stratified pattern, initial charge pressure, ignition time and the excess air ratio of the initial charge mixture. Flow characteristics including mean velocity and turbulence intensity were analyzed by a hot-wire anemometer. The combustion pressure development, measured by a piezo-electric pressure transducer, was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. It was found that the mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value around 200-300 ms and then decreased gradually to near-zero value at 3000 ms. For the stratified patterns, the combustion rate under the rich injection (RI) condition was the fastest. Under the initial charge conditions, the second mixture was accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the combustion rate.
The flow characteristics of the transitional oscillatory flows are investigated analytically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct. The systems of conservation equations are analytically solved by linearizing the non-linear convective terms for the developing transitional oscillatory flows in a square duct. The analytical solutions are obtained in the form of infinite series for the velocity profiles. The experimental study for the air flow in a square duct is carried out to measure the velocity profiles and waveforms by using a hot-wire anemometer with the data acquisition and processing systems. The theoretical and experimental results provide the major characteristics of the developing transitional oscillatory flows, such as velocity profiles, velocity waveforms, and entrance length. The velocity profiles in the decelerating phase are larger than those in the accelerating phase for the developing transitional oscillatory flows. The correlations of the entrance length of the transitional oscillatory flows in a square duct are found to be $Le/Dh=K{\cdot}Re_{os}/2({\omega}^+)^2$, where K is 1.23 of an experimental constant.

Effects of the duct inlet guide vane on the flowrate distribution characteristics of the defroster nozzle exit in a defrost duct system were investigated experimentally to design the optimum heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system applied in an automotive compartment. A 3-dimensional hot-wire anemometer system was used to measure the velocity field in the vicinity of the defroster nozzle jet flow and the velocity distributions near the windshield interior surface. At first, two cases of with- and without-duct inlet guide vanes were considered as the test condition, and then three cases of the duct inlet guide vane were tested to determine the optimum guide vane shape and their positions. The arrangement of the duct inlet guide vanes has an effect on the improved flowrate distribution at the defroster nozzle exit and near the windshield interior surface. However, the application of the lots of guide vane to control the flow direction leads to increase the flow resistance, resulting in the decreased flowrate issuing from the defroster nozzle. The shape of the duct inlet guide vane affects not only the flowrate distribution between the driver side and the assistant driver side but also the reduction of the flow resistance in the defrost duct system.
A wind tunnel study has been carried out to determine the influence of spacing between buildings on wind characteristics above rural and suburban type of terrain. Experiments were performed for two types of buildings, three-floor family houses and five-floor apartment buildings. The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) models were generated by means of the Counihan method using a castellated barrier wall, vortex generators and a fetch of roughness elements. A hot wire anemometry system was applied for measurement of mean velocity and velocity fluctuations. The mean velocity profiles are in good agreement with the power law for exponent values from ${\alpha}=0.15$ to ${\alpha}=0.24$, which is acceptable for the representation of the rural and suburban ABL, respectively. Effects of the spacing density among buildings on wind characteristics range from the ground up to $0.6{\delta}$. As the spacing becomes smaller, the mean flow is slowed down, whilst, simultaneously, the turbulence intensity and absolute values of the Reynolds stress increase due to the increased friction between the surface and the air flow. This results in a higher ventilation efficiency as the increased retardation of horizontal flow simultaneously accompanies an intensified vertical transfer of momentum.
