Effect of Microstructure on Fracture Behavior of Multi-phase Low-density Steel (다상계 저비중강의 파괴거동에 미치는 미세조직의 영향)

  • Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.

Microstructure, Hardness and Tensile Properties of 600 MPa-Grade High-Strength and Seismic Resistant Reinforcing Steels (600 MPa급 고강도 일반 및 내진 철근의 미세조직, 경도와 인장 특성)

  • This present study deals with the microstructure and tensile properties of 600 MPa-grade high strength and seismic resistant reinforcing steels. The high strength reinforcing steel (SD 600) was fabricated by Tempcore processing, while the seismic resistant reinforcing steel (SD 600S) was air-cooled after hot-rolling treatment. The microstructure analysis results showed that the SD 600 steel specimen consisted of a tempered martensite and ferrite-pearlite structure after Tempcore processing, while the SD 600S steel specimen had a fully ferrite-pearlite structure. The room-temperature tensile test results indicate that, because of the enhanced solid solution and precipitation strengthening caused by relatively higher contents of C, Mn, Si and V in the SD 600S steel specimen, this specimen, with fully ferrite-pearlite structure, had yield and tensile strengths higher than those of the SD 600 specimen. On the other hand, the hardness of the SD 600 and SD 600S steel specimens changed in different ways according to location, dependent on the microstructure, ferrite grain size, and volume fraction.

Effect of Austenitizing Temperatures on the Mechanical Properties in 420J2 Martensitic Stainless Steel (420J2 마르텐사이트계 스테인레스강의 오스테나이트화 온도가 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • For the purpose of investigating the effect of austenitizing temperatures on the mechanical properties of 0.23% C-13.6%Cr martensitic stainless steel, tensile properties, hardness, impact value and carbide extraction were examined after changing the austenitizing temperatures and tempering temperatures. The results obtained are summerized as follows. The carbide laminations formed from hot rolling before austenitization could not be eliminated after austenitizing at $950^{\circ}C$. With increasing austenitizing temperature, hardness increased and showed maximum value at $1050^{\circ}C$ and then slightly decreased. With increasing tempering temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$, impact value and elongation appeard to be decreased but hardness showed nearly unchanged at austenitizing temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$ due to the fine $M_7C_3$ carbides precipitation. The abrupt increase in impact value, hardness and elongation above the tempering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ appeared to change in carbide structure from fine $M_7C_3$ to coarse $M_{23}C_6$.

An Assessment on the Formation of Oscillation Mark of the Continuously Casted Steel Slabs (연속주조된 강재 슬래브 표면의 Oscillation Mark 형성에 관한 평가)

  • In early solidification during the continuous casting of steel slabs, the formation of oscillation marks on the surface of slabs was mainly affected by carbon contents and casting conditions. The control of oscillation mark is required for the HCR(Hot Charged Rolling) process because the deep oscillation marks seriously deteriorate the surface qualities of steel slabs. The metallographic study has revealed that the oscillation mark can be classified principally according to the presence or absence of a small 'subsurface hook' and the depth of the oscillation marks in the subsurface structure at the basis of individual oscillation marks. The subsurface hook of oscillation marks was either straight or curved. When the amount of overflow was small and the subsurface hook was formed in the top of oscillation marks, the subsurface hook was straight and the oscillation mark was shallow. The oscillation marks without subsurface hook have small early solidification shell and were formed wide. The actual negative strip time$(t_N)$ was changed by the effect of meniscus level fluctuation Therefore irregular early solidification shell and oscillation mark were formed.

Numerical Study on the Natural Circulation Characteristics in an Integral Type Marine Reactor for Inclined Conditions

  • A marine reactor shows very different thermal-hydraulic characteristics compared to a land- based reactor. Especially, study on the variation of flow field due to ship motions such as inclination, heaving and rolling is essential since the flow variation has great influence on the reactor cooling capability. In this study, the natural circulation characteristics of integral type marine reactor with modular steam generators were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics code, CFX-4, for inclined conditions. The numerical analyses are performed using the results of natural circulation experiments for integral reactor which are already conducted at Seoul National University. From the results, it was found that the flow rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes increases due to buoyancy effect. Due to this flow variation, temperature difference occurs at the outlets of the each steam generator cassettes. which is mitigated through downcomer by thermal mixing. Also, around the upper pressure header the flow from descending hot leg goes up to the ascending steam generator cassettes due to large natural circulation driving force in ascending steam generator cassettes. From this result, the increase of How rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes could be understood qualitatively.

  • Steel industry is the most capital intensive and the largest energy consuming industry, which operate huge and complex facilities to supply various steel products as the primary materials to almost every manufacturing industry Major steel products are hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, plates, and wires that are produced through molten iron making, molten steel making, casting, and rolling. Each process runs in batch between setups and the specifications or bach are different with each other High energy consuming and heavy material handling require careful synchronization or processes, as well. Considering the synchronization or processes, the lot planning and scheduling problem in the integrated steelmaking process rovers the roll grouping with given casts. the sequencing or rolls over time, and the machine assignment and time scheduling or charges and casts. The problem is investigated by dividing it into two cases whether single or parallel machines at the molten steel making and the continuous casting processes. Problem descriptions and solution approaches or each instance are introduced. To test their performance and conformity, implementation or the algorithms and numerical experiments are carried out with real world and constructed data sets.

Effect of Spherodizing Heat-treatment Time on Microstructure and Mechanical Property in Accelerated Cooling-treated API-X70 Steel (가속냉각처리한 API-X70강의 미세조직과 기계적 특성에 미치는 구상화 열처리시간의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spherodizing heat treatment holding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel, which is mainly used as a structural material for line pipe steel for natural gas pipes. The accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel was spherodizing treated at 700℃ for 12~48 h. The microstructure was observed using an OM and a FEG-SEM, and mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test. The microstructure of the API X70 steel was banded in the hot rolling direction, and the polygonal ferrite(PF) adjacent to pearlite(P) has mainly a fine size, and coarse PF and fine acicular ferrite were formed in the middle of P and P. As the spherodizing treatment time increased, the number of carbide particles decreased and its distribution interval increased, and the ferrite grain size was coarsened. The tensile strength decreased and the ductility increased with spherodizing treatment time, and the yield point elongation was disappeared in a stress-strain curve after the spherodizing treatment.

Impact Toughness and Fracture Behavior in Non-Heat Treating Steels Containing Bainite (베이나이트 함유 비조질강의 충격인성 및 파괴거동)

  • Impact toughness and fracture behavior were studied in five kinds of non-heat treating steels containing bainite; standard(0.25C-1.5Mn-0.5Cr-0.2Mo-0.15V), high V(0.3V), Ni(0.5Mn-2Ni), W(0.4W instead of Mo), and high C-Ni(0.35C-0.5Mn-2Ni) steels. The good hardness and impact toughness balance was exhibited in the $1100^{\circ}C$-rolled condition, while the impact toughness was deteriorated due to coarse grained microstructure in the $1200^{\circ}C$-rolled condition. The impact toughness decreased with increasing the hardness in all steels studied. The fracture behavior was also basically identical, that is, the fracture area was divided into 3 zones; shear and fibrous zone, fracture transition zone with ductile dimples and cleavage cracks, where the cracks initiate and grow to critical size, unstable cleavage fracture propagation zone. The energy absorbed for the critical crack formation through the plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in front of the notch root contributed to a mostly significant portion of the total impact energy.

Modeling of Cementite Precipitation Kinetics on Solute Carbon Content in Extra and Ultra Low Carbon Steels (극저탄소강의 고용 탄소 함량에 미치는 시멘타이트 석출 속도 모델링)

  • The solute carbon content in ferrite is one of the important factors to obtain good formability in low carbon steels. Although most of the carbons are consumed by the formation of grain boundary cementite during coiling after hot-rolling, the carbon content after coiling is normally observed much more than that of equilibrium. In this study, a classical nucleation and growth model is used to simulate the precipitation kinetics of the grain boundary cementite from coiling temperature (CT) to room temperature (RT). The predicted precipitation behaviors depending on the initial carbon content and the cooling rate are compared with the reported. As a result, the lateral growth of thickening of cementite is a major factor for the sluggish reaction of grain boundary cementite. The reduction of solute carbon content after coiling is divided into three regions: a) increase due to no cementite precipitation, b) decrease due to the fast length-wise growth of cementite, c) increase due to the slow thickness-wise growth of cementite.

Abnormal Coating Buildup on Si Bearing Steels in Zn Pot During Line Stop

  • A hot-dip simulator was utilized to replicate abnormal coating buildup observed during line stops at galvanize lines, assessing the influence of processing conditions on buildup (up to 14 mm/side). Steel samples from 19 coils (comprising IF, BH, LCAK, HSLA, DP600-DP1180, Si: 0.006 - 0.8 wt%, P: 0.009 - 0.045 wt%) were examined to explore the phenomenon of heavy coating growth. It was discovered that heavy coating buildup (~3 mm/h) and rapid strip dissolution (~0.17 mm/h) in a GA or GI pot can manifest with specific combinations of steel chemistry and processing conditions. The results reveal the formation of a unique coating microstructure, characterized by a blend of bulky Zeta crystals and free Zn pockets/networks due to the "Sandlin" growth mechanism. Key variables contributing to abnormal coating growth include steel Si content, anneal temperature, dew point in heating and soaking furnaces, Zn pot temperature, Zn bath Al%, and cold-rolling reduction%. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco galvanize lines, an automatic online warning system for operators and special scheduling for incoming Si-bearing steels have been implemented, effectively preventing further heavy buildup occurrences.
