The purpose of this study was to find a way to lengthen the life of hot closed forging die. The fluid interpretation on the plastic deformation of billet of billet was performed by finite element method. And design modification on the impression shape was also performed. The defaced part on the impression surface was mended by the developed build-up welding method. The die life was 3,000 units but alter the procedure it was lengthened up to 5,000.
In order to analyze the densification behaviour of stainless steel powder compacts during hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at elevated temperatures, a power-law creep constitutive model based on the plastic deformation theory for porous materials was applied to the densification. Various densification mechanisms including interparticle boundary diffusion, grain boundary diffusion and lattice diffusion mechanisms were incorporated in the constitutive model, as well. The power-law creep model in conjunction with various diffusion models was applied to the HIP process of 316L stainless steel powder compacts under 50 and 100 MPa at $1125^{\circ}C$. The results of the calculations were verified using literature data. It could be found that the contribution of the diffusional mechanisms is not significant under the current process conditions.

Recently, a demand of nano/micro patterned polymer for display or biochip has been rising. Then many studies have been carried out. Nano/micro-embossing is a deformation process where the workpiece materials is heated to permit easier material flow and then forced over a planar patterned tool. In this work, the hot-emboss process is performed with different forming conditions; forming temperature, load, press hold time, to get the proper condition for linear pattern fabrication on plated-type polymers (PC). Replicated pattern depth increases in proportion to the forming temperature, load and time. Reduction of the workpiece thickness increases according to press hold time. In process of time, reduction ratio of workpiece thickness decreases because of surface area increment of the workpiece and pressure decline on it.

The rigid-plastic finite element analysis was performed for analysis of ofhot forging and cold sizing of a bevel gear. Two dimensional analysis was carried out to investigate the defect occurrence on vertical symmetric planes during hot forging and three dimensional analysis was to understand the filling behavior on horizontal planes during cold sizing. The involute curve of a tooth was approximated by a circle for convenience in the present analysis. In order to estimate the elastic deformation of the gear and dies during cold sizing, linear elastic finite element analysis was performed. Results of the analysis can be used to predict grain flows and strength distributions in the forged gear, and to design dies and an appropriate preform for the cold sizing.
Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have been widely utilized for wear-resistant components in the automotive industry. In order to expand the application of Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, the addition of alloying elements forming a stable precipitate at high temperature is required. Thermally stable inter metallic compounds can be formed through the addition of transition elements such as Fe, Ni to Al alloys. However, the amount of transition element to be added to Al alloys is limited due to their low solid solubility. Also, hypereutectic Al-Si-Fe alloys form coarse primary Si phases and needle-shaped intermetallic compounds during solidification in the general casting processes. In this study, the effects of the destruction of Intermetallic compound and Si phase are investigated via hot extrusion. Both the microstructure and mechanical properties are discussed under different extrusion conditions.

The study is concerned with the thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis of nonisothermal hot container extrusion through conical dies. The problem is treated as a non-steady state incorporating the nonisothermal heat transfer analysis. The analysis of temperature distribution includes heat transfer though the boundary surface including conduction, convection and radiation. The analysis of heat transfer is decoupled with the analysis of deformation and the material interaction is considered through iteration procedure. The effect of important process parameters including die angle and extrusion ratio in the process is investigated. Due to the geometric feature for the container extrusion through conical dies, automatic remeshing is mandatory. Automatic remeshing is achieved by introducing the modular remeshing technique.
Thermocapillary convection in an open cylindrical annulus heated from the inside wall is investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The deformable free surface is obtained as a solution of the coupled transport equations at fixed Prandtl and aspect ratio. Only steady convection can be realized in this axisymmetric computations with either non-deformable or deformable surfaces. Dynamic free-surface deformations do not induce transitions to oscillatory convection even at large Reynolds numbers. Free surfaces are convex near the cold wall due to the stagnation point, and concave near the hot wall. Free surface deformation increases with increasing Ca at a fixed Re. Two peaks appear at the free surface with low Re, while additional ripples, four peaks, occur at larger Re. Thermocapillary convection in the open annulus interior is insensitive to variations in Ca.
Shear banding is an evidence of plastic instability that localizes large shear strains in a relatively thin band when a material is plastically deformed. Shear bands have attracted much attention in amorphous metals, because shear bands are the key feature that controls the plastic deformation process. In this article, we review recent advances in understanding of the shear bands in amorphous metals regarding: dislocations versus shear bands, the formation of shear bands, hot versus cold shear bands, and property manipulation by shear band engineering. Although there are many key issues that remain puzzling, the understanding built-up from these approaches will provide a new insight for tailoring shear bands in amorphous metals, which potentially leads to unique property changes as well as improved mechanical properties. Indeed, this effort might open a new era to the future use of amorphous metals as a new menu of engineering materials.

An integrated finite element computer simulator is presented for the prediction of three dimensional heat transfer and metal flow occurring in the strip, and heat transfer and thermo elastic phenomena occurring in the rolls in 4 high mill hot strip rolling. Basic finite element models are described, with emphasis on combining each model to deal rigorously with the coupled aspect of the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the rols and strip through an iterative solution procedure. A series of process simulation are carried out to investigate the effect of various parameters under the actual process conditions. The results are shown and discussed.

Exhaust manifold is generally subjected to thermal cycle loadings ; at hot condition, large compressive plastic deformations are generated, and at cold condition, tensile stresses are remained in highly deformed critical zones. These phenomena originate from that thermal expansions of the runners are restricted by inlet flange connected to the cylinder head, because the former is less stiff than the latter and, the temperature of the inlet flange is lower than that of the runners. Therefore, due to the repetitions of thermal deformation, leakage problems could be occur between inlet flange and cylinder head. In this study, we obtained pressure distributions along gasket bead lines from the finite element analysis and compared to the test results. It shows a good agreement between numerical and experimental results.
