In this paper, we propose a crucial issue to require further management plan for Korean hospital nurses in burnout during COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of factors related to hospital nurses in burnout for the COVID-19 outbreak. Appropriate studies in the recent three years were selected from database. To perform a systematic review, the databases of RISS, KISS, DBPIA, and Kyobo scholar were searched using the key words, 'nurse in burnout' or 'burnout for nurse'. Fifty-five references were checked, but only seven studies were decided inclusion criteria to review. It was founded that Korean hospital nurses felt moderate or higher burnout level for COVID-19 pandemic. We were confirmed that related factors of hospital nurses in burnout were personal characteristics, physical symptom, depression, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and resilience, and occupational characteristics, shift work and job stress. It may be necessary to provide regulating programs for hospital nurses in burnout and to set up a policy and guidelines so as to reduce burnout of nurses working.

Background: A series of breast cancer cases were recently reported in a tertiary university hospital in South Korea. Nurses are generally exposed to risk factors for breast cancer such as night shift work, antineoplastic agents, and job strain. However, the epidemiological evidence of excess incidence among nurses remains lacking. This study aims to investigate the excess incidence of breast cancer among nurses in a tertiary university hospital and provide epidemiological evidence of occupational risk factors. Methods: A retrospective cohort was developed using personnel records of female workers in the nursing department who worked from January 2011 to June 2021 in a tertiary university hospital in South Korea. Sick leave records were used to identify cases of breast cancer. The standardized incidence ratio of breast cancer among nurses was compared to the general population. Results: A total of 5,509 nurses were followed up for 30,404 person-years, and 26 breast cancer cases were identified. This study revealed a significantly increased breast cancer incidence among all included nurses, with a standardized incidence ratio of 1.65 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-2.41), compared to the general population. Workers, who handle antineoplastic agents in their representative department and current and/or former department, had significantly elevated breast cancer standardized incidence ratios of 2.73 (95% CI: 1.008-5.94) and 3.39 (95% CI: 1.46-6.68), respectively. Conclusions: This study provides significant evidence of increased breast cancer risk among nursing staff in a hospital setting, particularly those who handle antineoplastic drugs. Measures that reduce exposure to risk factors should be implemented, especially anticancer drugs, to protect healthcare professionals. Further research at a national level that focuses on healthcare workers is necessary to validate breast cancer incidence and its contributing factors.
The objective of this study is to find out the difference in perceptional fatigue and health promoting behavior between hospital nurses and public health nurses. The subjects of this study were 141 hospital nurses and 73 public health nurses in Daejeon. Data were collected using a self-reporting questionnaire during the period from the 5th to 16th of March 2003. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS program. Real number, percentage, mean and standard deviation were calculated, and $x^2$-test and t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression procedures were carried out. The findings of this study as follows: 1. The mean score of health promoting behavior was 2.71. 2. There were statistically significant differences in health promoting behavior according to age, marital status, family status, residency, educational level, income, the length of work experience and the field of work. (p<0.05) 3. There were statistically significant differences in fatigue according to age, marital status, family status, educational level, income, the length of work experience, perceived health status and the field of work. (p<0.05) 4. The fatigue was found to be in significant negative correlations with health promoting (r=-0.358, p<0.000) and self efficacy (r=-0.314, p<0.000). On the contrary, a significant positive correlation was found between fatigue and perceived barriers (r=0.210, p<00.01). 5. There were five predictors affecting health promoting behavior, which were self-efficacy, income, perceived benefit, fatigue and family support. The most influential factor was self-efficacy that made 31% of prediction, followed by income (6%), perceived benefit (5.2%), fatigue (2.2%) and family support (1.7%) in their order. As a whole, these factors made 46.1% of prediction of health promotion behavior.

This study is aimed at investigating and comparing the differences in the uniform of nurses according to regions and hospital size in Korea. This study takes two large regions as its survey area; one is Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, and the other is Daejon and Chungcheong Province. The hospital size is divided into general hospitals and neighborhood hospitals. The survey was conducted among the nurses working in 12 randomly-selected hospitals and its statistical results are analysed firm 818 respondents'questionnaires. The results are divided into 3 categories as follows; 1) Results of analysis of survey on the uniform of nurses : Nurses usually wear two-piece suits and more than half of the hospitals choose a white-color pattern. And the nurse's uniform with color varying according to their position and ward is considered to be desirable; 2) Analysis on regional differences : In the case of Daejon and Chungcheong Province, there is a relatively high ratio of respondents who answered questions with 'high percentage of young nurses', 'position differentiation by means of different design and fabric according to ward'. In case of Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, questions with 'use of a patterned textile in nurses'uniform', 'ready-made size system'are higher; 3) Analysis of the differences in accordance with hospital size : In the case of general hospitals, there is relatively a high ratio of respondents who answered questions with 'use of different design and fabric according to a nurse's position', 'use of patterns in nurses'uniform'. In the case of neighborhood hospitals, there is a high ratio of respondents with'use of classical one-piece or two-piece type wear', 'ready-made type size system', 'obligatory use off nurse's cap'.

Background: An increasing trend of cytotoxic drug use, mainly in cancer treatment, has increased the occupational exposure among the nurses. This study aimed to assess the change of nurses' safety-related knowledge as well as attitude levels and subsequently to assess the change of cytotoxic drug handling practices in wards after a series of pharmacist-based interventions. Materials and Methods: This prospective interventional study with a before and after design requested a single group of 96 nurses in 15 wards actively providing chemotherapy to answer a self-administered questionnaire. A performance checklist was then used to determine the compliance of all these wards with the recommended safety measures. The first and second assessments took 2 months respectively with a 9-month intervention period. Pharmacist-based interventions included a series of technical, educational and administrative support measures consisting of the initiation of closed-system cytotoxic drug reconstitution (CDR) services, courses, training workshops and guideline updates. Results: The mean age of nurses was $32.2{\pm}6.19$ years. Most of them were female (93.8%) and married (72.9%). The mean knowledge score of nurses was significantly increased from $45.5{\pm}10.52$ to $73.4{\pm}8.88$ out of 100 (p<0.001) at the end of the second assessment. Overall, the mean practice score among the wards was improved from $7.6{\pm}5.51$ to $15.3{\pm}2.55$ out of 20 (p<0.001). Conclusions: The pharmacist-based interventions improved the knowledge, attitude and safe practices of nurses in cytotoxic drug handling. Further assessment may help to confirm the sustainability of the improved practices.

Purpose: This study was carried out to obtain basic data for developing effective pain management by identifying the positive and negative determinants for pain management in both cancer patients and their nurses. Method: The participants were 85 cancer patients and 78 nurses at C university hospital in Seoul. Data were collected from December 2004 to March 2005 using structured questionnaires. Results: The level of pain peaked at 5.02 when going into the hospital, and was then lowered to 2.08. The waiting time for analgesics was less than 30 minutes in 81.1% of the patients and for 68.2% answered that they reported their pain when the pain was no more endurable. Just over eighty percent (80.6%) of the patients were satisfied with the pain management. Only 10.3% of the nurses used a standardized tool for assessing patients, pain and 64.1% gave analgesics whenever patients complained of pain, while 19.2% did not when patients complained too frequently. Nurses who were unsatisfied with pain management accounted for 85.4% of the participants. Patients showed higher levels of barriers to pain management than nurses. Conclusion: There is a need to give cancer patients and nurses appropriate information on effective cancer pain management.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between metabolic syndrome risk factors and health promotion behavior in general hospital nurses. Data were conducted using a structured questionnaire survey with 450 registered nurses in a general hospital in Gyeonggido. Data were collected from October 6 to October 31, 2014. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0. version. The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 8.0% for nurses at a general hospital. The mean score of Health promotion lifestyle profile was 2.53( range: 1.22~3.44). The high prevalence risk groups for metabolic syndrome was between 26 and 30 yr of age, ICU nurses and drinking one or two times/1wk. The study indicates that hospital administrators should focus on job circumstances of nurses(especially nurses classified as high prevalence risk for metabolic syndrome) for improvement and prevention of MS prevalence risk.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the belief in evidence-based practice, awareness of importance and performance of intravenous infusion and pressure ulcer evidence-based practice guidelines among nurses in a tertiary general hospital. Methods: The subjects of this study were 217 nurses working in a tertiary general hospital. Data collection was performed between February 11 and February 25, 2022. Data analysis was conducted descriptive statistics, t-test, hierarchical regression analysis, and Importance-Performance Analysis. Results: The mean score of belief for evidence-based practice among novice nurses was 3.34 out of 5, while preceptor nurses scored a mean of 3.41 out of 5. There was no significant difference in belief scores between novice nurses and preceptor nurses (t=-1.21, p=.227). The factors influencing the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines for intravenous infusion were belief in evidence-based practice (β=.14, p=.009) and importance of intravenous infusion (β=.51, p<.001), and the factors influencing the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines for pressure ulcer were belief in evidence-based practice (β=.15, p=.002) and importance of pressure ulcer (β=.65, p<.001). Importance-Performance Analysis of the evidence-based practice guidelines of two groups were used to identify common and different items. Conclusion: To improve the performance of evidence-based practice guidelines, it is necessary to enhance the evidence-based practice belief and importance of evidence-based practice guidelines. In particular, evidence-based practice should be provided to improve nursing quality through education on items of low-importance and low-performance and items of high-importance but low-performance guidelines identified through Importance-Performance Analysis.
Purpose: This study describes the associations between shift work factors, workplace violence bystander types, and the missed nursing care of hospital nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among hospital nurses using structured questionnaires related to shift work factors, workplace violence bystander types, and missed nursing care. The study participants were 199 nurses caring for adult patients and working in two tertiary hospitals. Results: The missed nursing care of the participants showed a statistically significant positive correlation with the facilitating bystander (r=.40, p<.001) and abdicating bystander (r=.28, p<.001) among the workplace violence bystander types. However, rest time during duty showed a significant negative correlation (r=-.16, p=.026). A regression model with control variables (department and clinical career), shift work factors, and workplace violence bystander types explained approximately 25% of missed nursing care of the study participants. Further, the facilitating bystander type influenced the missed nursing care of hospital nurses. Conclusion: As a result of examining the associations between shift work factors, workplace violence bystander types, and missed nursing care of hospital nurses, it was confirmed that missed nursing care was influenced by the facilitating bystander type. It is necessary to improve the nursing culture within the department so that nurses do not behave as negative bystanders to workplace violence.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to assess the efficacy and usefulness of the career ladder program in a hospital and to evaluate nurses' satisfaction with the program. Methods: The study was conducted using a survey consisting of 14 questions on the appropriateness, necessity and usefulness of the career ladder program. The data were gathered from 403 nurses in a hospital. We assessed differences in responses according to the participants' workplace, age, educational background, marital status, experience (total years and years at current working place). We analyzed the data using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: Nurses acknowledged that the career ladder program is necessary and profitable within the nursing field, but they worried about the appropriateness of the nurse's role at each career level and rationality of the portfolio. The study also identified nurses' characteristics that were significant factors in explaining nurses' satisfaction with the career ladder program. Finally, we identified complaints and improvements for the program. Conclusion: We assessed differences in attitude towards the career ladder program according to nurses' characteristics.
