This study examined the maximum resistant moment and nonlinear rotational stiffness of wedge joint between the vertical and horizontal members of system supports. To examine the maximum resistant moment and propose the nonlinear rotation stiffness of wedge joint, 6 specimens were tested and additional 3 specimens, where the horizontal member was welded to the vertical member, were tested to compare the moment capacity of wedge joints. The average maximum moment in the tested wedge joint was 1.183 kNm which represented about 70 % of the maximum moment developed in the welded specimens. And, as simulating nonlinear rotational stiffness of the wedge joint, a tri-linear model was suggested. The rotational stiffness was estimated as 23.095 kNm/rad in first stage, 7.945 kNm/rad in second stage, and 3.073 kNm/rad in third stage. For the failure mode, the specimen with the wedge joint showed the failure of joint between vertical and horizontal members. However, the specimen with welded joint represented the yielding of horizontal members.
This study analyzed the characteristics of four kinds of bridge rubber pads and suggested how to determine the stiffness the pads. The stiffness of rubber pads can be estimated by a direct static test. In the procedure to estimate the stiffness of a pad, the dead load(preload) of a bridge and live load of a vehicle are considered. The polyurethane rubber pads have larger hardness than natural and chloroprene rubber pads and thus carry larger load bearing capacity. In addition, they showed higher stiffness with the same shape factor than the others and thus are more avaliable as for bridge bearings. Although natural and chloroprene rubber pads are elongated to large deformation in horizontal direction due to vertical loads, polyurethane rubber pads almost do not generate horizontal deformation due to vertical loads regardless to the thickness and hardness of the pads. Therefore, they do not need reinforced plate to restrict horizontal deformation.
Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Bearings (FREBs) are a relatively new type of laminated bearings that can be used as seismic/vibration isolators or bridge bearings. In an unbonded (U)-FREB, the bearing is placed between the top and bottom supports with no bonding or fastening provided at its contact surfaces. Under shear loads the top and bottom faces of a U-FREB roll off the contact supports and the bearing exhibits rollover deformation. As a result of rollover deformation, the horizontal response characteristics of U-FREBs are significantly different than conventional elastomeric bearings that are employed in bonded application. Current literature lacks an efficient analytical horizontal stiffness solution for this type of bearings. This paper presents two simplified analytical models for horizontal stiffness evaluation of U-FREBs. Both models assume that the resistance to shear loads is only provided by an effective region of the bearing that sustains significant shear strains. The presented models are different in the way they relate this effective region to the horizontal bearing displacements. In comparison with experimental results and finite element analyses, the analytical models that are presented in this paper are found to be sufficiently accurate to be used in the preliminary design of U-FREBs.
This study examined the effect of rotational stiffness of joints between vertical and horizontal members in system supports. In order to prevent repeated disasters of system supports, it is important to examine the accurate behavior of system supports. Among various factors affecting the complex behavior of system supports, this study focused on the stiffness of joints between vertical and horizontal members. The considered joint was modelled by a rotational spring, but the translational displacements were fixed. The stiffness of rotational spring was calculated by utilizing the usable experimental data. In addition, the hinge connection condition, which is generally considered in design and only restrict the translational displacements, was modelled to compare the results. The case with the rotational stiffness in joints showed 3.5 times buckling loads compared to the case without the rotational stiffness. Thus, the structural behavior of the vertical member in system supports was similar to the vertical member with the fixed condition. For the combined stresses of vertical members, the combined stress ratios were reduced 5~6% by considering the rotational stiffness of connecting parts. However, for the horizontal member where showed relatively small stress range, the stresses were increased 2.3~7.6 times by considering the rotational stiffness in connecting parts.
Though stiffnesses of joints in precast concrete(P.C.) large panel structures are known to be generally less than those in monolithic reinforced concrete wall structures, designers have very little information on the quantitative values with regards to these stiffnesses. The aim of this paper is to provide this quantitative information, in particular, on the compressive stiffness of horizontal joints, based on the analytical results derived from several experiments. Also, it is shown that the approach from the contact problem to determine this stiffness gives a value very simlar to those obtained above.
This paper proposes an optimal design method of a seismic reinforcement system for the seismic performance of adjacent asymmetric-stiffness structures with viscous dampers. The first method considers plan asymmetry for efficient seismic reinforcement, and evaluates the seismic performance of optimal design applied to two cases of modeling: adjacent stiffness-asymmetric structures and adjacent stiffness-symmetric structures. The second method considers the response of asymmetric structures to derive the optimal objective function, and evaluates seismic efficiency of the objective function applied to two cases of responses: horizontal displacement and torsion. Numerical analyses are conducted on 7- and 10-story structures with a uni-asymmetric-stiffness plan using six cases of historic earthquakes, normalized to 0.4g. The results indicate that the seismic performance is excellent as modeled by adjacent asymmetric-stiffness structures and how much horizontal displacement is applied as the objective function.

The SASW method is a promising and effective way of profiling ground stiffness nondestructively. This method has been successfully applied to many geotechnical sites, but significant lateral variability, embedded obstacles, and pavement lead to the low reliability. To improve these problems, the horizontal wave component has been introduced to improve the reliability of the stiffness profile determined by the SASW method. To understand dispersion character of the horizontal component wave propagation in artificial profiles, FEM analysis had been performed. Used models are homogeneous half-space and two layered half- spaced layers.

Cable supported structures offer an elegant and economical solution for bridging over long spans with resultant low material content and ease of construction. In this paper, a model of shallow cable supported footbridge with reverse profiled pre-tensioned cables is treated and its load deformation characteristics under different quasi-static loads are investigated. Effects of important parameters such as cable sag and pre-tension are also studied. Numerical results performed on a 3D model show that structural stiffness of this bridge (model) depends not only on the cable sag and cross sectional areas of the cables, but also on the pre-tension in the reverse profiled cables. The tension in the top supporting cables can be adjusted to a high level by the pre-tension in the reverse profiled bottom cables, with the total horizontal force in the bridge structure remaining reasonably constant. It is also evident that pre-tensioned horizontally profiled cables can greatly increase the lateral horizontal stiffness and suppress the lateral horizontal deflection induced by eccentric vertical loads.

In this study, dynamic responses of high - rise buildings were analyzed through the change of horizontal stiffness and yield strength among characteristics of seismic isolation system by applying middle - layer seismic isolation system to high - rise buildings of 120m height. As a result in order to prevent the displacement of the isolation layer and to control the maximum torsion angle, it is possible to appropriately control by increasing or decreasing the horizontal stiffness and the yield strength. However, depending on the maximum torsional angle and the hysteretic behavior of the seismic isolation system, excessive yield strength and horizontal stiffness increase may induce the elastic behavior of the structure and amplify the response. Therefore, it is considered that it is necessary to select the property value of the appropriate isolation device.
