  • A numerical calculation with the commercial computational fluid dynamics code CFX-14.0 was conducted for a test facility simulating the Canadian deuterium uranium moderator thermal-hydraulic. Two kinds of moderator thermal-hydraulic tests at Stern Laboratories Inc. were performed in the full geometric configuration of the Canadian deuterium uranium moderator circulating vessel, which is called a calandria tank, housing a matrix of horizontal rod bundles simulating calandria tubes. The first of these tests is the pressure drop measurement of a cross flow in the horizontal rod bundles. The other is the local temperature measurement on the cross section of the horizontal cylinder vessel simulating the calandria system. In the present study, the full geometric details of the calandria tank are incorporated in the grid generation of the computational domain to which the boundary conditions for each experiment are applied. The numerical solutions are reviewed and compared with the available test data.

  • A container ship, due to wide hatch openings, has characteristics of poor torsional rigidity, strong coupling of horizontal-torsional modes and significant discontinuity in the longitudinal variation of hull sections. In the mathematical formulation of the problem the hull is modeled as a beam and the transfer matrix method is utilized. The cross decks between cargo hatch opening are separated from the main hull and regarded as equivalent springs restraining torsion of hull. The effect of shear deformation of ship-side plating on torsion is taken into account in addition to St. Venant's and bending torsional rigidities. Compatibility requirements at cross section discontinuity are approximately considered. Developing the practical calculation procedure and the computer programs for application to an actual ship, some parametric studies on modeling methods of the cross deck, the compatibility condition, added-mass center etc. are out for the purpose of comparison.

  • The spinning machine has been developed for a bus and truck wheel disc which is manufactured by spinning process method. This machine has the mechanical structure with bed, 2-column, cross head, 2-vertical slide, 2-horizontal slide with forming roller, clamp slide and main spindle similar to large size vertical lathe. Main spindle attached the mandrel is rotated about 500rpm drived by 280kW power DC motor, and a rotating black material pressed on the mandrel with the clamp slide is spinformed by 2-forming rollers which are attached inner end of the 2-horizontal slides. The 2-vertical and 2-horizontal slides are actuated by the hydraulic cylinder which is controlled by the servo valve individially, and these servo valves are controlled by control signal of the CNC controller which is computed with position signal feedbacked from the encoder sensor. The developed machine can manufacture wheel disc of various section profile without mandrel change because section profile is easily modified using program editing in the CNC controller processor. The wheel disc manufactured by spinning process method has many advantages that the endurance is increased by 2 times and the weight is decreased by 30% compared with a conventional disc.

  • A two-lane highway has a high rate of head-on collisions, sideswipe collisions, crashes with an fixed object. This study was to analyze the weakness of a cross section and a horizontal curve in a two-lane highway and find countermeasures to improve the traffic operations and safety. This study evaluated the effectiveness of widening, curve flattening and superelevation, verified it with a case study and assessed the economical efficiency. This study selected the difference between tangent section operating speeds and curve section operating speeds as an evaluation index of horizontal curve section in a two-lane highway. The results indicated that curve flattening is the best way to improve the traffic safety in a two-lane highway. This study has implication that it provides the quantitative effects of curve flattening. Also directions for future study were discussed.

  • A knowledge of in situ stress state is important to design various engineering structures such as dams, tunnels and so on. There are about three wellknown indicators that is, borehole will breakouts, hydraulic fracturing, ellipsoidal cross section of borehole that have been attributed to the state of stress in the vicinity of borehole. Fortunately, Televiewer traveltime image can be used as a caliper log with 144 or 288 arms, which allows to determine the borehole shape. Televiewer amplitude image will give detailed information about the distribution and character of breakouts and hydraulic fracturing as well. For investigation purposes, a series of boreholes(total 195 boreholes: 12.239m) that have been logged all over the country during past 10 years are analyzed. The primary objective of this paper are to examnine the ability of a Televiewer to determine the shape of borehole, to present data inferred by stress indicators, to indicate their possible relationship with the anisotropic horizontal stresses. It is shown that in most cases the fracture orientation statistically estimated from observed fractures denotes an excellent correlation with the orientations inferred by stress indicators. Many intervals of breakouts are terminated at the intersection of oblique fracture with the borehole. The results from Televiewer data are further compared with those of hydraulic fracturing techniques.

  • This study was undertaken to compare the biomass of Abies koreana growing at two sites. A $10{\times}10m$ plot was established in each site of a natural stand in Mt. Jiri and a plantation in Gyeongsan nursery. Five trees of A. koreana were randomly selected in each site. The following traits were investigated from each tree : height, basal diameter, age, weight of stem, branches, and needles as above-ground traits and weight of total roots, horizontal roots, and vertical roots as below-ground traits. In Gyeongsan nursery, age of sample trees was negatively correlated with both height and weight of total stem, while height was highly correlated with weight of horizontal roots. There was high correlation between the basal diameter and weight of total stem, and between the basal diameter and weight of roots. In Mt. Jiri stand, most of the above-ground traits except age were significantly correlated with the below-ground traits. The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base (X) and the weight of total stem (Y) in Gyeongsan nursery was Y=12.66X-12.92, and correlation was significant ($R^2=0.89$). The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base(X) and the weight of total branches (Y) in Mt. Jiri stand was Y=25.51X+6.00, and correlation was highly significant ($R^2=1.0$).

  • Characteristics of thermal flow stratification were studied experimentally by using the small scale pressurizer-surge line model. Thermal flow stratifications in the horizontal section of surge line were analyzed by the relation between the maximum temperature difference at any cross section in surge line and the Froude number representing the boundary conditions, i.e., in/out surge flow velocity and temperature difference of system. Thermal flow stratifications in outsurge flow decreased inversely proportional to the Froude number and did not exist for Fr>1. In insurge flow thermal flow stratifications disappeared near Fr=1.5, but resulted in the higher temperature difference than the case of outsurge flow.

  • In this paper, a design program for electric railway pole foundation was developed by applying the estimation study performed by Korean Railway. There are two kinds of shapes in the cross-section of electric railway pole foundation: rectangle and circle. In foundation designing, The rectangular foundation should be satisfied with vertical, horizontal and moment equilibrium equations. On the other hand, the circular foundation should be satisfied with horizontal and moment equilibrium equations. The design program was coded into MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class) by MS Visual C. The equation's roots in the program were obtained by Incremental Search method. Dialog and property sheet(Wizard Mode) input windows were selected for user-friendliness. The biggest advantage of this program is to find an optimum depth in a given section.

  • It was analysed the effect of pipe cooling as a measure to avoid thermal cracks due to the heat of hydration during the curing process of a massive prestressed concrete (PSC) slab. PSC slab has a complex three-dimensional shape of which the maximal and minimal thicknesses of cross-section were 2.8 and 0.95m, respectively. Steel pipes of which the diameter was 1 inch were employed for cooling. The horizontal and vertical distances between the contiguous pipes were 0.5 and 0.6m, respectively. One the four layers of cooling pipe were arranged according to the thickness of cross-section. Temperature distribution was calculated by the program developed by the authors, of which the accuracy was verified on a few published papers by the authors. Based on the temperature analysis of the cross-section which had four layers of cooing pipe, the maximum temperature of concrete interior was 54.2$^{\circ}C$ and the maximum differenced between the interior and surface temperatures of concrete was 14.$0^{\circ}C$ and, thereby, the thermal cracking index was 1.1. Upon the stress analysis, the thermal cracking index was 0.92 and the probability of thermal-crack development was 52%. Therefore, it was expected to make it possible to reduce the probability of thermal-crack development in a massive PSC slab by adopting pipe cooling.

  • In this study, effect of horizontal in situ stress on failure mechanism around underground openings excavated in isotropic, elastic rock zones is investigated. For estimating the plastic zone occurrence, an induced stress influence area approach (Bray Equations) was modified to define critical stress ratio according to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Results obtained from modified calculations were compared with results of some other analytical solutions for plastic zone thickness estimation and the numerical modelling (finite difference method software, FLAC2D) study. Plastic zone and its geometry around tunnels were analyzed for different in situ stress conditions. The modified equations gave similar results with those obtained from the other approaches. However, safer results were calculated using the modified equations for high in situ stress conditions and excessive ratio of horizontal to vertical in situ stresses. As the outcome of this study, the modified equations are suggested to use for estimating the plastic zone occurrence and its thickness around the tunnels with circular cross-section.
