  • Natural convection of air with Pr=0.7 between two horizontal plates with small magnitude non-uniform temperature distribution[${\in}{\Delta}Tsin({\kappa}X/H)$, H : gap width, X : horizontal coordinate] in the lower plate is numerically(${\in}=0.01$) investigated. In the conduction-dominated regime with $Ra{\leq}1700$, two upright cells are formed over one wave length($2{\pi}/{\kappa}$). For small wave number, the flow becomes unstable with increase of Rayleigh number, and multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number. The flow patterns are classified by the number of eddies over one wave length. When ${\kappa}=1$, a transition of $2{\rightarrow}4{\rightarrow}6$ eddy flow occurs with increase of Rayleigh number, and no hysteresis phenomenon is observed. Dual and triple solutions are found for ${\kappa}=1$, and transitions of $10{\rightarrow}8$, $8{\rightarrow}6$, $6{\rightarrow}4{\rightarrow}2$ eddy flow occur with decrease of Rayleigh number.

  • Natural convection in a horizontal annulus with spacers has been studied on the effects of diameter ratio and Rayleigh numbers and position of spacers by experimental method. In case of vertical spacers, the local spacer Nusselt numbers show positive values on the lower spacer, but negative values on the upper spacer. In case of horizontal spacers, the local spacer Nusselt numbers show positive values on the upward surface of spacer, but negative values on the downward surface of spacer. The mean tube Nusselt numbers and mean cylinder Nusselt numbers with vertical spacer are increased 10% and 2.1%, respectively by those of horizontal spacer.

  • Natural convection in annuli between the horizontal and vertical concentric cylinders for ratio of the inner to the outer radius, $R_1$=0.85, 0.35 has been studied by the numerical analysis. Governing equations are numerically sloved by means of Successive over-relaxation methods. It is found that maximum local Nusselt number, $Nu_{1.max}$ at the inner cylinder and $Nu_{2.max}$ at the outer cylinder for $R_2$=0.35 have maxima at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$, ${\phi}=180^{\circ}$ ${\xi}=0.4$, 1.6 for horizontal cylinder and at bottom, top for vertical cylinder, respectively. In the present study, mean Nusselt numbers at the vertical cylinder increased more than that at the horizontal cylinder by about 64% for $R_1$=0.35.

  • This study conducted direct numerical simulations of the natural convection phenomena of gaseous hydrogen in a physical storage container containing four circular cylinders. Rayleigh numbers (Ra) in the range of 104≤Ra≤106 and a Prandtl number (Pr)=0.69 (gaseous hydrogen) were considered. The main parameter is a horizontal distance of four circular cylinders and the values of εh=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 are considered. The flow and thermal structures and corresponding heat transfer characteristics are investigated with respect to the transition of the flow regime. The time- and surface-averaged Nusselt number on the cylinder surface and the wall of physical storage container increased by about 57% and 69% according to the Ra and εh, respectively. Thus, the horizontal distance has an influence on the heat transfer characteristics on natural convection of gaseous hydrogen.

  • We have conducted a preliminary numerical analysis to understand the effects of double-diffusive convection on the molar flux at the crystal region during the growth of mercurous bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals in 1 g and microgravity (${\mu}g$) conditions. It was found that the total molar fluxes decay first-order exponentially with the aspect ratio (AR, transport length-to-width), $1{\leq}AR{\leq}10$. With increasing the aspect ratio of the horizontal enclosure from AR = 1 up to Ar = 10, the convection flow field shifts to the advective-diffusion mode and the flow structures become stable. Therefore, altering the aspect ratio of the enclosure allows one to control the effect of the double diffusive natural convection. Moreover, microgravity environments less than $10^{-2}g$ make the effect of double-diffusive natural convection much reduced so that the convection mode could be switched over the advective-diffusion mode.

  • The physical model considered here is a horizontal layer of fluid heated below and cold above with heat-generating conducting body placed at the center of the layer. The dimensionless thermal conductivities of body considered in the present study are 0.01, 1 and 150. The dimensionless temperature difference ratios considered are 0.25, 2.5 and 25. Two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral methodology for variety of Rayleigh number from $10^{3}$ to $10^{6}$. Multi-domain technique is used to handle square-shaped heat-generating conducting body. The results for the case of conducting body with heat generation are also compared to those without heat generation.

  • This investigation presents the experimental results of forced convection boiling heat transfer around a circular, electrically heated horizontal cylinder to subcooled water in cross flow. In these experiments, the following primary variables were included: heat flux, flow velocity, pressure and degree of subcooling at inlet. Local surface temperatures were measured at nine peripheral positions. Local surface temperature distributions are classified into four categories depending on the supplied heat flux. The effects of the boiling curve depending on the fluid velocity, degree of subcooling at inlet and pressure are presented.

  • Low Rayleigh number thermal convection in a fluid layer confined between two-infinite horizontal walls kept at spatially sinusoidal temperature distributions, T_L=T_m+\Delta T\sin \kappax,\;T_U=T_m+\Delta T\sin(\kappax-\beta)$, is theoretically investigated by a regular perturbation expansion method. For small wave numbers, an upright cell is formed between the two walls at $\beta$=0. The cell is tilted, as the phase difference increases, and a flow with tow counter-rotating eddies occurs at $\beta=\pi$. when the wave number is large, isolated eddies are formed near the lower and upper walls, for all the phase differences. There exists a wave number at which maximum heat transfer rate at the walls occurs, at each of the phase differences. And the wave number increases with increase of the phase difference. for a fixed wave number, the heat transfer rate decrease with increase of the phase difference.

  • This study investigates the oscillatory thermal convection of a fluid with Pr=0.02 in a wide-gap horizontal annulus with constant heat flux inner wall. When Pr=0.02, dual steady-state flows are not found. After the first Hopf bifurcation from a steady to a time-periodic flow, five successive period-doubling bifurcations are recorded before chaos. The power spectrum shows the $period-2^4\;and\;2^5$ flows clearly, and a window of period $3{\times}2^3$ flow is found in the chaotic regime. The approximate value of the Feigenbaum number for the last three period-doubling bifurcations is 4.76. The transition route to chaos of the present simulations is consistent with the period-doubling route of Feigenbaum.

  • Transition of flows in natural convection in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.2. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped eddy flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. After the first Hopf bifurcation, however, a reverse transition from oscillatory to a steady flow occurs by the flow pattern variation. Hysteresis phenomenon occurs between the solution branches of up-scan and down-scan stages, and dual solutions with one steady and one oscillatory flow are found. Overall Nusselt of the flows at the flows at the down-scan stage is greater than that at the up-scan stage.
