수돗물 부식성 제어를 통한 수도관 부식방지기술: 석회수 분산화장치를 이용한 미네랄 공급 효과와 영향 분석 (Corrosion control technology in water pipes by adjusting the corrosivity of drinking water : effect and impact of the lime dispersion system)

  • Corrosion inhibitors including calcium hydroxide have been used to prevent corrosion in the pipes for tap water supply. The corrosion index (i.e., Langelier Index) differs by area and water quality. The corrosion indices of the areas studied differed by more than 2.0. The 'homogenized' calcium hydroxide was added to the treated water at the K water treatment plant, in order to increase the value of the corrosion index and the concentration of calcium. As the result, the concentration of calcium was increased while the turbidity and pH changed little. The corrosion rate of the tap water with the 'homogenized' calcium hydroxide could be slowed down pretty much. The results suggested that the technology of 'homogenization' of calcium hydroxide can applied to tap water and desalinated water to prevent corrosion in water pipes even in corrosive pipes.

Al-Mg-Mn합금의 기계적(機械的) 성질(性質)에 미친 여비압재(予備圧在)의 영향(影響) (Effect of Pre-Rolling on the Mechanical Properties of AI-Mg-Mn Alloy)

  • 본 실험에서는 여비압연이 4. 6%Mg-0.5% Mn-0.18%Cr의 알루미늄합금의 균질화처리 및 그의 기계적 성질에 마치는 영향을 조사하였다. 여비압연후 균질화 열처리된 시편은 주조상태의 시편에 비하여 실온 인장강도 및 연신률이 증가되고 있음을 보여주었다. $400^{\circ}C$의 고온 인장시험의 결과는 여비압연후 균질화열처리한 시편이 주조상태 또는 그의 균질화처리만 시행한 것에 비하여 다소 낮은 인장강도와 현저히 향상된 연신률을 소지함을 보여주었다. 여비압연후 균질화열처리된 시편의 금속현미경조직은 다른 시편들에 비해 결정입계에 ${\beta}$ 상등의 제2상이 현저히 감소되고 있음을 나타내고 있다. 시편의 결정입내 및 입계에 있어서의 주된 합금첨가원소인 Mg 분포상태를 EPMA를 사용하여 조사하였다. 이 결과는 균질화처리를 시행하기 전에 여비압연을 도입함으로써 균질화처리의 효과가 증대되고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

Improved Antitumor Efficacy of Hyaluronic Acid-Complexed Paclitaxel Nanoemulsions in Treating Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

  • Paclitaxel (PTX) is a effectively chemotherapeutic agent which is extensively able to treat the non-small cell lung, pancreatic, breast and other cancers. But it is a practically insoluble drug with water solubility less than $1{\mu}g/mL$, which restricts its therapeutic application. To overcome the problem, hyaluronic acid-complexed paclitaxel nanoemulsions (HPNs) were prepared by ionic complexation of paclitaxel (PTX) nanoemulsions and hyaluronic acid (HA) to specifically target non-small cell lung cancer. HPNs were composed of ${\small{DL}}-{\alpha}$-tocopheryl acetate, soybean oil, polysorbate 80, ferric chloride, and HA and fabricated by high-pressure homogenization. The HPNs were $85.2{\pm}7.55nm$ in diameter and had a zeta potential of $-35.7{\pm}0.25mV$. The encapsulation efficiency was almost 100%, and the PTX content was 3.0 mg/mL. We assessed the in vivo antitumor efficacy of the HPNs by measuring changes in tumor volume and body weight in nude mice transplanted with CD44-overexpressing NCI-H460 xenografts and treated with a bolus dose of saline, $Taxol^{(R)}$, PTX nanoemulsions (PNs), or HPNs at a dose of 25 mg/kg. Suppression of cancer cell growth was higher in the PN- and HPN-treated groups than in the $Taxol^{(R)}$ group. In particular, HPN treatment dramatically inhibited tumor growth, likely because of the specific tumor-targeting affinity of HA for CD44-overexpressed cancer cells. The loss of body weight and organ weight did not vary significantly between the groups. It is suggest that HPNs should be used to effective nanocarrier system for targeting delivery of non-small cell lung cancer overexpressing CD44 and high solubilization of poorly soluble drug.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Extruded Al 7050 Billet and Ring Forged One with Large Scale

  • The manufacturing process of large scaled Al 7050 alloy is difficult for the occurrence of solidification crack during casting. The aims of this study are the evaluations of microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Al 7050 billet and ring forged one with large scale. Large scaled Al 7050 billet was casted by direct-chill casting process. The extruded and ring forged specimens were prepared from the casted ingot after residual stress relief and homogenization heat treatment, respectively. Microstructures, hardness and tensile test of the surface, middle and center part of each specimen were performed at room temperature. Sheared and elongated type grains were observed at the edge parts of surface and center area and its aspect ratios of grains were low and similar as 0.21 while that of middle area was closed to 0.92 value in ring forged Al 7050 alloy. The mechanical properties of extruded Al 7050 alloy were superior than those of ring forged one. The hardness values of surface and center part were slightly higher than that of middle part in ring forged Al 7050 alloy.

Ti-Nb계 합금의 상변화가 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of phase changes on mechanical properties of Ti-Nb alloys)

  • The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. This paper was described the influence of phase changes of Ti-Nb alloys on mechanical properties. Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type),Ti-20wt.%Nb($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. The specimens were homogenized at 1050$^{\circ}C$ for 24hr and were then hot rolled to 50% reduction. Each alloys were solution heat treated at $\beta$ zone and $\alpha+\beta$ zone after homogenization and then were aged. The mechanical properties of Ti alloys were analysed by hardness test, tensile test, elongation test and SEM test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The higher hardness value of $\alpha+\beta$type alloy was obtained compared to the, $\alpha,\beta$type alloys. 2) The aged treated showed better hardness compared to the solution heat treated, homogenized. 3) In the case of solution and aging treatment at $\beta$region, the $\alpha+\beta$type alloy showed the most highest tensile strength and $\beta$type alloy showed the best elongation.

균질화 처리에 따른 Al-Mg-Zn 합금의 내식성 거동 (Corrsion behavior of Al-Mg-Zn Alloys by homogenization heat treatment)

  • 최근 환경오염 문제로 인한 연비 규제 강화 속도가 빨라지고 있으며 이에 따른 연비 향상 기술이 크게 대두 되고 있다. 연비 향상 기술 중 경량화 방안소재로 알루미늄(Al), 마그네슘(Mg) 등의 비철금속을 주로 사용하고 있으며, 이중 알루미늄은 다른 경량화 금속소재보다 우수한 경쟁력을 가지고 있다. 하지만 경제적인 측면에서 철 대비 비용적인 어려움을 가지고 있고 용접성이 떨어지기 때문에, 자동차 부품의 일부만 알루미늄 소재를 선택하여 사용하고 있는 실정이며 알루미늄의 높은 이온화 경향으로 인해 기존 자동차 철강 소재와 접촉 시 쉽게 부식되는 단점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해서는 알루미늄의 금속원소를 첨가하는 연구가 지속적으로 개발 되고 있다. 알루미늄 합금에서 마그네슘의 첨가는 좋은 용접성과 내식성, 강도를 향상시킨다. 하지만 3%이상의 마그네슘 첨가는 입계에 ${\beta}(Al_xMg_y)$석출상이 석출되게 되며, 입계에 연속적으로 형성된 ${\beta}(Al_xMg_y)$석출상은 응력 부식 균열 (Stress corrsion cracking)과 입계 부식(Intergranular corrosion)을 야기하는 결과를 가져온다고 알려져 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 Al 5000계열 합금의 Zn의 첨가를 통해 ${\tau}(Al_xMg_yZn_z)$을 입계에 석출시켜서 입계에 ${\beta}(Al_xMg_y)$상의 석출을 방지함으로써 내식성을 향상시키거나 Al 5000계열 합금의 열처리를 통해 ${\beta}(Al_xMg_y)$석출상을 고용시킴으로써 응력부식균열의 발생을 억제하는 연구도 있다. 하지만 열처리 후 Polarization test를 이용한 내식성 연구는 잘 안 알려져 있다. 따라서 이번 연구에서는 Al5000계열의 주조한 합금을 DSC분석을 통하여 ${\beta}(Al_xMg_y)$석출상의 고용 온도가 약 $470^{\circ}C$라는 것을 확인한 후, 실온에서 $100^{\circ}C/hr$으로 가열하고 조건에 따라 $450^{\circ}C$에서 3시간, 6시간, 12시간, 24시간, 30시간 항온 유지시킨 후 공냉을 진행하였다. 열처리를 마친 시편은 에폭시를 이용하여 마운팅 하였으며, 시편표면을 2000#까지 연마 후 증류수로 세척한 다음 질소를 이용하여 건조 후 분극 시험을 진행하였다. 3.5wt% NaCl 용액에서 분극 곡선을 통해 부식거동을 확인한 결과 24시간까지 시간이 증가 할수록 내식성이 우수해지는 것을 확인하였으며, 추가적으로 조직사진, SEM & EDS 분석과 XRD, TEM 분석을 통해 내식성은 입계에 존재하는 Mg의 조성이 감소하게 되면 내식성이 향상되는 것을 관찰하였다.

Cytotoxic Effect of Urushiol on Human Ovarian Cancer Cells

  • Urushiol, a natural pro-electrophilic quinone compound, has potential structural characteristics as antitumor chemotherapeutic agents. However, urushiol's use as an antitumor drug has some problems, because it is hardly miscible with an aqueous solution. Purified urushiol is highly viscous and soluble only in strong solvents. for this study, we prepared an urushiol-ethanol micro-emulsion with a unimodal size distribution by high-speed homogenization. This generated effective delivery of urushiol to its action wites, so that we could investigate its cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. Using a colony-forming assay, we were able to show that urushiol selectively inhibited the growth of the ovarian cancer cells PA-1 and 2774 at a concentration of $10^{-6}$, whereas it had only a negligible effect on normal CHO cells at the same concentration. The data suggest that urushiol may have potential as an effective antitumor agent in the treatment of ovarian cancer. In addition, we addressed the question of whether the specific cytotoxic effect of urushiol is linked to apoptosis, by DNA fragmentation and DAPI staining assays. The inhibitory effects of urushiol on the growth of ovarian cancer cells was found to be associated with DNA fragmentation and the fragmented nuclei formation, both of which represent markers for the induction of apoptosis. Therefore, the results suggested that urushiol affected its profound cytotoxicity by triggering apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells.

EPMA를 이용한 침탄강의 정확하고 신뢰성 있는 탄소농도 측정을 위한 분석조건 최적화 (Optimization of Analytical Condition for Reliable and Accurate Measurement of Carbon Concentration in Carburized Steel by EPMA)

  • The carbon concentration in the carburized steels was measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) for a range of soluted carbon content in austenite from 0.1 to 1.2 wt%. This study demonstrates the problems in carbon quantitative analysis using the existing calibration curve derived from pure iron (0.008 wt%C) and graphite (99.98 wt%C) as standard specimens. In order to derive an improved calibration curve, carbon homogenization treatment was performed to produce a uniform Kα intensity in selected standard samples (AISI 8620, AISI 4140, AISI 1065, AISI 52100 steel). The trend of detection intensity was identified according to the analysis condition, such as accelerating voltage (10, 15, 30 keV), and beam current (20, 50 nA). The appropriate analysis conditions (15 keV, 20 nA) were derived. When the carbon concentration depth profile of the carburized specimen was measured for a short carburizing time using the improved calibration curve, it proved to be a more reliable and accurate analysis method compared to the conventional analysis method.

AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y 마그네슘 합금 주조재의 시효경화 거동 및 기계적 특성 (Age-hardening Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y Alloy)

  • In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.

Comparison of chemical and physical extraction methods of steamed-mature silkworm (Hongjam) protein

  • The efficiency of protein extraction from Hongjam, a steamed mature silkworm, was quantitatively evaluated using various chemical buffers and physical methods. This study considers the difficulty of protein extraction yield due to the high content of hydrophobic amino acids in Hongjam compared to 5th instar-3rd day silkworm larvae. Results indicated that urea buffer enhanced protein yield more effectively than RIPA buffer. Additionally, the application of physical methods such as microwave treatment to samples treated with RIPA buffer increased yields by up to 22%, achieving concentrations as high as 3.9 mg/mL. Circular dichroism (CD) analysis showed that proteins extracted with urea buffer retained their structural integrity, exhibiting deeper and more prominent peaks associated with random coil structure. In addition, physical methods such as vortexing, sonication, microwave and homogenization increased the extraction yield of larger molecules without altering protein structures, suggesting their potential scalability for industrial applications. These results demonstrate the critical role of selecting appropriate extraction methods to optimize the yield and functionality of proteins from Hongjam, with implications for its use in biotechnological applications and nutraceuticals.
