  • A two dimensional pseudo-homogeneous model for the methanol reforming reaction was developed and its steady and dynamic states were studied by a computer simulation. The reactor tube diameter, the catalyst density in the fixed bed, the feed flow rate, the feed temperature and the external temperature were chosen to be adjusted to determine the length of the reactor. The dynamics of the reactor showed that the system was highly nonlinear and sensitive to the feed disturbances.

  • We have studied the generation and behavior of negative ions in silane plasmas. The negative ions were formed by homogeneous reaction in silane plasma and the behavior of negative ions were predicted by solving the model equations. The concentration profiles of negative ions were shown as a function of reactor length and time. The effects of process variables such as reactor pressure, flow rate and electrical field strengths on the behavior of negative ions were analyzed.

  • We have studied the generation, growth and behavior of chemical species and particles in silane PCVD. We included the plasma chemistry of silane, particle nucleation by homogeneous formation, acrosol dynamics and transport phenomena of chemical species and particles. The concentration profile of chemical species and particles were shown as a function of reactor length. The effects of process variables such as reactor pressure, total gas flow rate and electrical field strength on the behavior of chemical species and particles were analyzed.

  • The homogeneous coating of a flexible film that is applied to dye-sensitized solar cells is related to the performance and durability of the product. The applied coating is obtained from the uniform temperature distribution and the mass flow rate in the nozzle of the hot air dryer. In this study, we determine the uniform temperature distribution and mass flow rate of each nozzle by performing numerical simulations to understand how various factors affect the performance of the hot air dryer. The numerical model is composed of the momentum equation for flow motion and the energy equation for temperature. In addition, we compare the numerical results to the experimental results to validate the model. Based on the results, the round-hole plate inside the hot air dryer significantly affects the uniform temperature and the mass flow rate.

  • The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under the ambient pressure condition, and the injection timing in the visualization engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior, we obtained the spray velocity using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and calculated the vorticity from spray velocity component. These results elucidated the relationship between vorticity and entropy which play an important role in the diffusion process for the early injection case and the stratification process for the late injection case. In addition, we quantified the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. Using these method, it was found that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation. We also found that the homogeneous diffusion rate increased as the injection timing moved to the early intake stroke process and BTDC $50^{\circ}$ was the most efficient injection timing for the stratified mixture formation during the compression stroke.

  • Wall functions have been widely used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and can save significant computational costs compared to other near-wall flow treatment strategies. However, most of the existing wall functions were based on the asymptotic characteristics of near-wall flow quantities, which are inapplicable in complex and non-equilibrium flows. A modified wall function is thus derived in this study based on flow over a plate at zero-pressure gradient, instead of on the basis of asymptotic formulations. Turbulent kinetic energy generation ($G_P$), dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) and shear stress (${\tau}_{\omega}$) are composed together as the near-wall expressions. Performances of the modified wall function combined with the nonlinear realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are investigated in homogeneous equilibrium atmosphere boundary layer (ABL) and flow around a 6 m cube. The computational results and associated comparisons to available full-scale measurements show a clear improvement over the standard wall function, especially in reproducing the boundary layer flow. It is demonstrated through the two case studies that the modified wall function is indeed adaptive and can yield accurate prediction results, in spite of its simplicity.

  • Groundwater seepage into a tunnel is one of the main causes triggering tunnel collapse and the consequent ground subsidence. Thus, it is important to estimate adequately the groundwater inflow rate and porewater pressure change during tunneling with time elapse. In current practice, Goodman's analytical solution (or image tunnel method) assuming homogeneous ground condition around a tunnel is commonly used for estimating groundwater inflow rate. However, the generally-used analytical solution for estimating groundwater inflow rate does not consider groundwater level drawdown and permeability change with depth, and the inflow rate can be overestimated in design phase. In this study, parametric study was performed in order to investigate the effect of groundwater level drawdown and permeability reduction with depth, and transient flow analysis was carried out for studying the inflow rate change as well as groundwater level and porewater pressure change around a tunnel with time elapse.

  • One-dimensional aluminum nitride (AlN) nanostructures were synthesized by calcining an Al(OH)(succinate) complex, which contained a very small amount of iron as a catalyst, under a mixed gas flow of nitrogen and CO (1 vol%). The complex decomposed into a homogeneous mixture of alumina and carbon at the molecular level, resulting in the lowering of the formation temperature of the AlN nanostructures. The morphology of the nanostructures such as nanocone, nanoneedle, nanowire, and nanobamboo was controlled by varying the reaction conditions, including the reaction atmosphere, reaction temperature, duration time, and ramping rate. Iron droplets were observed on the tips of the AlN nanostructures, strongly supporting that the nanostructures grow through the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The variation in the morphology of the nanostructures was well explained in terms of the relationship between the diffusion rate of AlN vapor into the iron droplets and the growth rate of the nanostructures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of operational and design factors on the performance characteristics of a horizontal fin-tube heat exchanger under phase change conditions for refrigerant. The flow and heat transfer in the heat exchanger are simulated numerically taking into account the variations of heat transfer coefficients, thermodynamic and flow properties of refrigerant, and the axial heat conduction in the tube wall. As the results of this study, it was found that the annular flow model was more reasonable physically than the homogeneous one for the two phase flow of refrigerant and axial heat conduction of tube wall did not have a great influence on the analysis. The effects of refrigerant pressure, mass flow rate of air, diameter of tube and the number of fins per unit length of tube were also discussed.
