  • The stresses and deflections in a laminated rectangular plate under thermal vibration are determined by using the moving least squares differential quadrature (MLSDQ) method based on the first order shear deformation theory. The weighting coefficients used in MLSDQ approximation are obtained through a fast computation of the MLS shape functions and their partial derivatives. By using this method, the governing differential equations are transformed into sets of linear homogeneous algebraic equations in terms of the displacement components at each discrete point. Boundary conditions are implemented through discrete grid points by constraining displacements, bending moments and rotations of the plate. Solving this set of algebraic equations yields the displacement components. Then substituting these displacements into the constitutive equation, we obtain the stresses. The approximate solutions for stress and deflection of laminated plate with cross layer under thermal load are obtained. Numerical results show that the MLSDQ method provides rapidly convergent and accurate solutions for calculating the stresses and deflections in a multi-layered plate of cross ply laminate subjected to thermal vibration of sinusoidal temperature including shear deformation with a few grid points.

  • This paper deals with application of a non-linear continuum model for reinforced concrete affected by alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) to analysis of some nuclear structures. The macroscopic behaviour of the material affected by AAR is described by incorporating a homogenization/averaging procedure. The formulation addresses the main stages of the deformation process, i.e., a homogeneous deformation mode as well as that involving localized deformation, associated with formation of macrocracks. The formulation is applied to examine the mechanical behaviour of some reinforced concrete structures in nuclear power facilities located in Quebec (Canada). First, a containment structure is analyzed subjected to 45 years of continuing AAR. Later, an inelastic analysis is carried out for the spent fuel pool taking into account the interaction with the adjacent jointed rock mass foundation. In the latter case, the structure is said to be subjected to continuing AAR that is followed by a seismic event.

  • The evolution of texture and microstructure during continuous confined strip shearing (CCSS) in aluminum 3003 alloy sheets was investigated. The tools of CCSS based on the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were designed to provide a constant shear deformation of the order of 0.5 per pass while preserving the original sheet shape. FEM results indicated that the shear formation is not homogeneous throughout the sample thickness, in particular at the surface layers. A randomization of textures took place during the CCSS deformation. Observations by TEM and EBSD revealed the formation of sub-micrometer sized grains after CCSS.

  • Postbuckling of thick plates made of functionally graded material (FGM) subjected to in-plane compressive, thermal and thermomechanical loads is investigated in this work. It is assumed that the plate is in contact with a Pasternak-type elastic foundation during deformation. Thermomechanical non-homogeneous properties are considered to be temperature independent, and graded smoothly by the distribution of power law across the thickness in the thickness in terms of the volume fractions of constituents. By employing the higher order shear deformation plate theory together the non-linear von-Karman strain-displacement relations, the equilibrium and compatibility equations of imperfect FGM plates are derived. The Galerkin technique is used to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths for simply supported plates. Numerical examples are presented to show the influences of power law index, foundation stiffness and imperfection on the buckling and postbuckling loading capacity of the plates.

  • A semi-analytical method is presented for accurately prediction of the free vibration behavior of generally laminated composite plates with arbitrary boundary conditions. The method employs the technique of separation of spatial variables within Hamilton's principle to obtain the equations of motion, including two systems of coupled ordinary homogeneous differential equations. Subsequently, by applying the laminate constitutive relations into the resulting equations two sets of coupled ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients, in terms of displacements, are achieved. The obtained differential equations are solved for the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes, with the use of the exact state-space approach. The formulation is exploited in the framework of the first-order shear deformation theory to incorporate the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The efficiency and accuracy of the present method are demonstrated by obtaining solutions to a wide range of problems and comparing them with finite element analysis and previously published results.

  • In this paper the stress and strain behaivor in near homogeneous isotropic matrix of metal like steel was studied roll forming of thin steel sheet for cylindrical pipe. Analytical results reveals a body which is on the area of square thickness along and perpendicular to the width of thin steel sheet is in the state of plane strain during roll forming. As a result construction of analytical method for calculating deformation load and stably deformed length along the width of strained steel sheet was established. Also loads applied during roll forming were analyzed using two typical thin steel sheet 12.3m thick steel sheet with 42.5kg /mm2 yield strength of pipe and 5.3mm thick steel sheet with 32.5kg/mm2 yield strength of pipe. Through this analysis applicability of the analytical method for deformation load during roll forming of cylindrical thin steel pipe was evaluated with a study of necessary production technology for roll forming and design technology for roll forming machine.

  • A material model has been presented, at the continuum level, for the representation of superplastic deformation coupled with microstructural evolution. The model presented enables the effects of the spatial variation of distributions of grain size to be predicted at the process level. The model has been tested under conditions of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous stress and strain by carrying out detailed comparison of predicted distributions of grain size and their evolutions with experimentally obtained data. Experimental measurements have shown the extent of the spatial variation of the distribution of grain size that exists in the titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. It is shown that whilst not large, the variations in grain size distributions are sufficient to lead to the development of inhomogeneous deformation in test pieces, which ultimately result in localisation of strain and failure.

  • The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.

  • The present paper develops application of third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT) and modified couple stress theory (MCST) to size-dependent bending analysis of a functionally graded cylindrical micro-shell. The radial and axial displacement components are described based on TSDT for more accurate analysis. The effect of small scales is accounted based on MCST. The principle of virtual work is used for derivation of bending governing equations. The solution is presented for a simply-supported boundary condition to account the influence of various important parameters such as micro length scale parameter, in-homogeneous index and some dimensionless geometric parameters such as length to radius and length to thickness ratios on the bending results. A comparative analysis is presented to examine the effect of order of employed shear deformation theory on the axial and radial displacements.
