  • The control of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (homeotropic and homogeneous alignment) surface were studied. High NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-7492 surface was measured and the NLC pretilt angle increases with blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-150 surface was not varied. The high pretilt angle the NLC using blending polyimide surface can be achieved.

  • The control of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the rubbing blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-7492 surface was measured and the LC pretilt angle increased wish blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the rubbed blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-150 surface was measured. The high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blending PI surface.

  • From UV irradiation, we achieved homeotropic liquid crystal alignment on blended photo-polymer layer which is composed of polyvinyl-cinnamate (PVCi) and homeotropic polyimide (PI). From vertical alignment (VA) mode, we measured threshold voltages by various PVCi doping concentration. Also, the rise time and fall time of VA cells were measured to verify the best doping concentration. Transmittance curves showed about 70% value between 380 nm and 780 nm wavelength which mean visible region.

  • The tilt angle generation of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) on the homeotropic polyimide(PI) surface by the new Ion beam alignment method is studied. The tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface for all incident angle is about 38and this has a stabilization trend. And the good LC alignment of the NLC on the PI surface by ion beam exposure of 45Incident angle was observed. Also the tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface by ion beam exposure of 45Incident angle had a tendency to decrease as ion beam energy density increase. So we had known that pretilit angle could be controlled from verticality to horizontality.

  • In this paper, we have improved a novel high tilted optically compensated bend (OCB) (HTOCB) mode by using high tilt angle that was generated by the unique baking condition on the homeotropic alignment layer. The high tilt angle of liquid crystal (LC) was generated by new alignment process that tilt angle changed homeotropic state to homeogenous state using Hot-plate equipment; we obtained about $40\~50^{\circ}$ tilt angle with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the homeotropic polyimide (PI), and then LC tilt angle decreased as increasing baking temperature and time. At last, we obtained about $10^{\circ}$ with positive type NLC $({\Delta}n>0)$. Also, the LC tilt angle of positive type NLC $({\Delta}n>0)$ decreased as increasing rubbing strength at the same baking temperature and time. The novel LC operating mode (HTOCB) that used the high tilt angle by the new alignment method was improved. The response time of the novel HTOCB cell was faster than that of conventional OCB cell. We suggest that the developed the novel HTOCB cell using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time and a high contrast ratio.

  • In this paper, we have improved a novel (ECB) mode using tilt angle in the unique condition by hot-plate equipment. The new control of tilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed homeotropic polyimide (PI) using baking method by Hot-plate equipment was investigated. LC tilt angle decreased with increasing baking temperature and time. Especially, the low LC tilt angle of positive type NLC $({\Delta}n>0)$ on the rubbed homeotropic PI surface by increasing temperature and time was measured. The EO characteristics of the novel ECB mode using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface than that of conventional OCB cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed the Novel ECB cell using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time and a high contrast ratio.

  • Blending effects for generating a pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface were studied. Also, we investigated the EO performances for the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using this homeotropic blended PI surface. A many decrease of tilt angle on the polymer surface to blend homeotropic PI and homogeneous PI with side chain type was measured, and the tilt angle decreased as blended ratio and rubbing strength increase. The blended effects for generating a pretilt angle were clearly observed, and the many decrease of tilt angle can be achieved by using the blended PI surface. The electro-optical (EO) characteristics using the advanced VA-$\pi$ cell using the homeotropic blended PI surface than that of conventional VA cell can be improved. We suggest that the developed advanced VA-$\pi$ cell on a homeotropic blended PI surface is a promising technique for the achievement of a fast response time, and a high contrast ratio.

  • The liquid crystal(LC) aligning capabilities of a nematic liquid crystal(NLC) on a homeotropic polyimide(PI) surface using a new ion-beam method were studied. Exposure ion-beam of $45^{\circ}$ incidence angle shows a good LC alignment of the NLC on the homeotropic PI surface. Also, on the homeotropic PI surface, the tilt angle of the NLC by exposure ion-beam of $45^{\circ}$ incidence angle had a tendency to decrease as increased ion-beam energy density. And, on the homeotropic PI surface, the alignment character of the NLC with respect to ion-beam energy was good at 1500 eV. And we achieved satisfactory result for EO character.
