  • Full color holographic optical element fabrication using a photopolymer is proposed for a waveguide-type head mounted display. The fabricated full color holographic optical elements can be attached to the waveguide to replace the conventional couple-in and couple-out optics in the head mounted display. To implement the system, this study analyzed the optical characteristics of the photopolymer using three lasers (red, green and blue). Considering the color uniformity, a new laminated structure for a full color holographic optical element was also designed. The proposed system was confirmed experimentally.

  • In this paper, a new method to efficiently generate the holographic news ticker in holographic 3DTV or 3-D movies using N-LUT method is proposed. The proposed method is largely consisted of five steps: construction of the LUT for each character, extraction of characters in news ticker, generation and shift of the CGH pattern for news ticker using the LUT, composition of hologram pattern for 3-D video and news ticker and reconstruct the holographic 3D video with news ticker. From some simulation results confirmed the feasibility of the proposed method in fast generation of CGH patterns for holographic news ticker.

  • We propose a speckle reduction technique in electronic holographic display systems, where digital micro-mirror array devices are used as spatial light modulators. By adopting a programmable filtration in a general 4-f optic configuration, it is shown that the signal spectrum components in the frequency domain of a viewing-window-based holographic display system can be selectively filtered. Compared to the widely utilized single-sideband filtration techniques in electronic holographic display systems, our proposed programmable filtration can be utilized to effectively reduce the speckles in the reconstruction of point-cloud-based computer-generated holograms. Experimental results are presented to verify our proposed concept.

  • This study is focused on proposing a creative system that can display 3D hologram on the real-time basis. This method applies 3D display on volume hologram based on CGH. The process of implementing the system consists of two stages of fringe pattern recording for passive component that includes information on hologram, and irradiating object beam. Distinguished from an existing electronic holographic display system, this system is free from the process of a huge calculation that is necessary to compose CGH for a real-time 3D display.

  • Supermultiview and electro-holographic displays are promising displays for the future because they provide continuous parallaxes as their depth cue. But they are still in the early development stage due to the lack of supporting technologies. Achieving the continuous parallax in the supermultiview relies more on the number and size of pixels in the pixel cell/elemental image rather than the number of different view images. For the electro-holographic display, it also relies on the number and size of pixels in the panel. So these two methods share the same requirements for achieving the parallax. But the image displayed on the holographic display provides more impressive visual appeal than that on the supermultiview because the image can be floated on the front space of the display.

  • This paper proposes an optical system for complex holographic display that enhances the quality of the reconstructed three-dimensional image. This work focuses on a new design for an optical system and the evaluation of the complex holographic display, using a single spatial light modulator (SLM) and a circular grating. The optical system is based on a 4-f system in which the imaginary and real information of the hologram is displayed on concentric rectangular areas of the SLM and circular grating. Thus, this method overcomes the lack of accuracy in the pixel positions between two window holograms in previous studies, and achieves a higher intensity of the real object points of the reconstructed hologram than the original phase-reconstructed hologram. The proposed method provides approximately 30% less NMRS (Normal Root Mean Square) error, compared to previous systems, which is verified by both simulation and optical experiment.

  • A holographic display based on a viewing window enables the converging of a reconstruction wave into a viewing window by means of an optical system. Accordingly, a user can observe a reconstructed hologram image, even with a small diffraction angle. It is very difficult to manufacture an optical system with no aberrations; thus, it is inevitable that a certain amount of wave aberrations will exist. A viewing-window-based holographic display, therefore, always includes distortions in an image reconstructed from a hologram pattern. Compensating the distortions of a reconstructed image is a very important technical issue because it can dramatically improve the performance when reconstructing a digital three-dimensional content image from a hologram pattern. We therefore propose a method for suppressing image distortion by measuring and compensating the wave aberration calculated from a Zernike polynomial, which can represent arbitrary wave aberrations. Through our experimental configuration using only numerical calculations, our proposed method decreased the reconstructed image distortion by more than 28%.

  • We first review a real-time holographic recording technique called optical scanning holography (OSH) and discuss holographic reconstruction using spatial light modulators (SLMs). We then present how the overall system can be used for three-dimensional (3-D) holographic television (TV) system and address some of the issues encountered. Finally, we suggest some techniques to alleviate the issues encountered in such a 3-D holographic TV.
