  • This paper presents the experimental results of axially loaded stub columns of slender steel hollow square section(SHS) strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers(CFRP) sheets. 6 specimens were fabricated and the main parameters were: width-thickness ratio(b/t) and CFRP retrofitting. From the tests, it was observed that two sides would typically buckle outward and the other two sides would buckle inward. A maximum increase of 33% was achieved in axial-load capacity. Also, stiffness and ductility index(DI) were compared between unretrofitted specimens and retrofitted specimens. In the last section, a prediction formula of the ultimate strength developed using the experimental results is presented.

  • Hollow fiber (HF) membranes are gaining wide interest over flat membranes due to their compaction and high area to surface volume ratio. This work addresses the fabrication of HF from polysulfone (PS) and polyethersulfone (PES) using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent in addition to other additives to achieve desired characteristics. The semi-pilot spinning system includes jacketed vessel, four spinneret block, coagulation and washing baths in addition to dryer and winder. Different parameters affecting dry-wet spinning phase inversion process were investigated. Dope compositions of PES, NMP and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) of varying molecular weights as additive were addressed. Some critical parameters of importance were also investigated. Those include dope flow rate, air gap, coagulation & washing baths and drying temperatures. The measured dope viscosity was in the range from 1.7 to 36.5 Pa.s. Air gap distance was adjusted from 20 to 45 cm and coagulation bath temperature from 20 to $46^{\circ}C$. The HF membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and mechanical properties. Results indicated prevalence of finger like structure and average surface roughness from about 29 to 78.3 nm. Profile of stress strain characteristics revealed suitability of the fibers for downstream interventions for fabrication of thin film composite membrane. Different empirical correlations were formulated which enable deeper understanding of the interaction of the above mentioned variables. Data of pure water permeability (PWP) confirmed that the fabricated samples fall within the microfiltration (MF)-ultrafiltration (UF) range of membrane separation.

  • Syntheses of monodisperse and micron-sized hollow plastic pigment (HPP) were carried out through the core-shell reaction. The effects of the reaction parameters, such as the particle size, molecular weight, the swelling time, agitation rate, and the solid contect were investigated. This micron-sized HPP could be made by using the alkali soluble core with at least bigger than 200 nm size. To obtain a higher opacity ratio, the swelling time and molecular weight of the core should be controlled. The agitation rate affected the particle's morphology. To prevent the shell destruction, the agitation rate must be sufficiently low in case of the syntheses of micron-sized HPP. In this study, micron-sized HPP exhibiting the high hiding power and narrow particle distribution could be obtained.

  • This study is a series of experimental investigations of the buckling strengths of eccentrically compressed, cold-formed, stainless-steel, circular, hollow-section beam columns. The principal parameters that were used in this study were the slenderness ratios (Lk/r = 30, 50, 70) and the magnitude of eccentricity e(one way: 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100mm: the other way: 0, 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50mm) on the asymmetrical end-moment of a double curvature. The objectives of the study were to obtain the maximum loads through an experiment and to compare the experimental behaviors with the analysis results. The ultimate buckling strength of the square section members were evaluated using a numerical method, in accordance with the bending moment-axial force(M-P) interaction curves. The behavior of each specimen was displayed in the form of the strength-displacement and moment-angle(M-$\theta$) relationship.

  • To obtain a lower story height with a long span and better fire resistance, a new composite floor system using GFRP (glass-fiber-reinforced plastics) was proposed. This floor system consists of asymmetric steel with a web opening, a hollow core ball, concrete, and GFRP. To evaluate the flexural performance of the new composite floor system, an experiment was conducted. The test parameters were the presence of GFRP, the void ratio in relation to the hollow core balls, and the web opening. The test results showed that the resistance and stiffness of the specimen with GFRP were 10% higher than those of the reference specimen, and that fully composite action was accomplished up to the yielding point. After the attainment of the yield strength, the ductility of the specimen was reduced due to the stress concentration around the web openings. The slip between the concrete and steel beam, however, was small. Thus, in the design of the proposed new floor systems, it is desirable that the calculated resistance be reduced by 15%, for safety.

  • To investigate the performance of VOC separation, composite hollow fiber membrane was prepared which composed of poly (ether imide) support prepared by phase separation method and poly (dimethylsiloxane) coating active layer. The performances of the membranes for the application of recovery process in terms of their morphology, gas permeance test for $N_2$ and $O_2$ gases. Durability against benzene, toluene and xylene was also investigated. And permeation test for multi-component VOCS through the membrane with different feed concentration and stage-cut were investigated. Permeance of PEI supported membrane and the membranes coated with PDMS decreased from 45,000 GPU to 63 GPU and 49,450 to 30 GPU for $N_2$ and $O_2$, respectively. Recovery efficiency and concentration of VOCs in permeate increased with decreasing stage-cut. VOCs concentration in permeate proportionally increased with increasing feed concentration but concentration ratio and recovery efficiency showed any noticeable changes with feed concentration change.

  • A numerical analysis was carried out for separation of carbon dioxide from carbon dioxide/nitrogen gas mixture by a polyethersulfone hollow fiber membrane which has shown a good stability against plasticization by carbon dioxide and an excellent separation efficiency fur carbon dioxide from its gas mixture. A computer program for carbon dioxide separation was developed using the Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 software. Governing module equations were thought to be an initial-value problem and the nonlinear ordinary differential equations were simultaneously solved using the Runge-Kutta-Verner fifth-order method. From results of numerical analysis, the carbon dioxide partial pressure of the feed stream, the pressure ratio of the feed side to the permeate side and the feed gas residence time at the inside of a membrane were found to be very important factors to affect the permeation characteristics of carbon dioxide.

  • This paper presents the results of the systematic finite element analysis of the in-plane bending moment of T-joints subjected to cyclic loadings. T-joints were fabricated using high-strength, circular, hollow sections. Three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element models of the welded T-joints were constructed to investigate the strength, rotational-stiffness characteristics, and failure modes. A wide scope of structural behaviors explain the influence of the joint geometric parameters, such as the chord and brace wall slenderness ratios and the ratio of the brace to the chord diameter, as well as the yield strength ratios and compressive-chord-stress effects on the ultimate in-plane bending moment capacity of the T-joint.

  • The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.

  • Fibroin is a biopolymer available in large quantity from silk fiber and has a long history of use as a suture proving biocompatibility. In this report, fibroin microspheres has been fabricated for biomaterial applications. W/O emulsion of regenerated fibroin droplets in a continuous phase of decane with mixed surfactants was dried to facilitate fibroin gelation and the condensed fibroin microspheres were harvested. The ratio of mixed surfactants and their proportions to decane were determined to prepare a stable W/O emulsion. A spherical form of fibroin gels was obtained from the W/O emulsion agitated at 600 rpm. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that number average sizes of the fibroin microspheres were 21.6 and 8.5 ${\mu}m$ when dried under ambient conditions or under vacuum, respectively. Tomography of the spheres revealed that their internal structures are packed or hollowed. Hollow and hemispherical forms of microspheres were also prepared by using porogen.
