Conductive microspheres with a density of 0.2 g/cc were fabricated by electroless silver plating for application to the light-weighted microwave absorbers. The silver plating was conducted with the variation of plating conditions (sensitizing condition, $AgNO_3$, concentration, amount of reducing agent). Specimens have very low electro-resistivity. Under an optimum processing condition, conductive microspheres with uniform silver plating layer can be produced. Rubber-sphere composites were fabricated and their microwave absorbing properties were measured by HP8722D Network Analyzer. It was found that the lower the electrical resistance of microsphere, the better the microwave absorbing properties. Feasibility of microwave absorbers using this microspheres can be demonstrated with the result of microwave reflection loss of -15 dB and thickness of 1.44 mm.
The humidity controlling ceramic materials was developed by applying the phenomena of dew condensation in the capillary. It is said that the humidity range which human feels comfortable is from 40 to 70% in relative humidity. In this study, the ceramic tile using natural soils such as diatomite for interior wall was investigated. In particular, we had introduced novel processing routes for fabricating microcellular ceramics tile using hollow microsphere as a pore former. The microcellular pores in the humidity controlling ceramic materials showed the superior properties such as light-weight, heat insulation. The cell density was ${\sim}1.0{\times}10^9$ cells/$cm^3$ and density of sample was 0.65 g/$cm^3$ in the case of 1.71 wt% hollow microsphere content. Also, it is observed that the BET surface area and the pore volume of the sintered diatomite tile have the values of 40.92 $m^2$/g and 0.173 $cm^3$/g.
Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.
Modern concrete high safety, constructability and economy due to advantages such as buildings used for more than about 70%, but due to the low thermal performance is essential, such as installation of additional insulation is required, and therefore increase the cost of construction, as well as the construction period and condensation Symptoms such as a domestic environment, such as to inhibit the problem by generating such an improvement has been desired. In this study, we want to present the base line data for the development of improved insulation performance concrete with analyzing and evaluating the Durable Properties of the concrete combination of hollow glass microsphere and lightweight aggregate.
The thermal shock resistance of cement composites with hollow glass microspheres (HGM) is investigated. Cement composites containing various concentrations of HGM are prepared and their properties studied. The density, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites decrease with increasing HGM concentration. A thermal shock test is performed by cycling between -60 and 50℃. After the thermal shock test, the compressive strength of the cement composite without HGM decreases by 28.4%, whereas the compressive strength of the cement composite with 30 wt% HGM decreases by 5.7%. This confirms that the thermal shock resistance of cement is improved by the incorporation of HGM. This effect is attributed to the reduction of the thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of the cement composite because of the incorporation of HGM, thereby reducing the occurrence of defects due to external temperature changes.
This paper presents apparent thermal conductivity of various powder at different vacuum levels for cryogenic insulation. Four kinds of powder insulator are examined by using boil-off calorimetry at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. The first material is perlite which is widely used in cryogenic application. Microsphere is the second one that is recently proposed as a replacement powder for liquid hydrogen storage tanks. It is a hollow sphere made of silica with the diameter in the order of 10 to $100{\mu}m$. Popped rice and polystyrene beads are also selected as candidates for powder insulation even though they are polymers. With their porous elliptic and spherical configuration and light density, they demonstrate fairly good thermal insulation performance at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. According to the experimental investigation in this paper, microsphere and polystyrene beads possess promising insulation characteristic as powder insulators and further study is desired.
This study was aimed to examine the synergetic effects of photochemopreventive external agents composed of inorganic ZnO and esculetin. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used in sunblocks because of its excellent biostability and little toxicity. Esculetin derived from Citrus Peel has an anti-oxidative effect. We made the hollow-shaped ZnO microsphere (MS), soaked it with esculetin (EZnO). We used SKH-1 mice to measure the photodamaging effects of UVB. The mice were divided into five groups as follows; UVB nontreated group (N), vehicle (C), esculetin (E), ZnO MS (ZnO), esculetin + ZnO MS(EZno) group. Each group of samples was topically applied to the dorsal skins before the UVB irradiation. The changes of collagen fibers in the skin tissues were observed by H & E staining and Van Gieson staining. The expression of mast cells in skin tissue was observed by immunohistochemical staining of tryptase present in the mast cell granules. Expression of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, and MMP-9, which plays an essential role in wrinkle formation, was measured by RT-PCR. Interestingly, the composition of collagen fibers was better in the EZnO applied group than in the E or ZnO group. Moreover, mast cell expression and the expression of TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, and MMP-9 mRNA were markedly suppressed in the EZnO group, indicating that the synergetic effects of esculetin and ZnO were excellent.
Porous zirconia ceramics are widely considered to be important due to their unique properties and potential applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to produce porous zirconia ceramics. The linear shrinkage of the prepared porous zirconia ceramics could be controlled to 4% by incorporating pre-sintered zirconia granules and hollow polymeric spheres. We also investigated the effect of pre-sintered zirconia granules on the microstructure and the properties, such as the porosity, pore distribution, and bending strength of the porous zirconia ceramics.
