아메리카잎굴파리에 의한 거베라 피해잎의 조직학적 관찰 (Anatomical Observation of Leaf of Gerbera hybrida Hort. Injured by Liriomyza trifolii)

  • 아메리카잎굴파리에 의해 피해를 입은 거베라 잎의 피해부위인 흡즙 부위 및 식해흔의 내부조직 구조를 광학현미경(LM)과 주사전자현미경(SEM)을 이용하여 관찰하였다. 아메리카 잎굴파리에 의한 피해 잎의 내부조직 관찰 결과, 피해의 진행과정은 대개 3단계로 관찰할 수 있었다. 첫째, 초기 단계로 흡즙 후 산란하는 부위는 비교적 세포조직이 치밀한 책상조직이었으며, 둘째, 알에서 부화한 유충은 주위의 책상 조직만을 식해하면서 잎조직 속에서 굴을 만들기 시작하고, 세째, 성장한 유충은 점점 굴을 크게 하면서 성장하여 잎의 표피층을 뚫고 나오기 직전에는 1층의 책상조직과 책상조직에 연결된 2층의 해면조직까지 식해하면서 잎의 내부에 피해를 가하는 것을 관찰하였다.

치아회분(齒牙灰粉) 및 인공(人工) 수산화(水酸化) 아파타이트 치근(齒根)이 치조제(齒槽堤) 유지(維持)에 미치는 영향(影響) (A study on the effect of tooth ash and hydroxylapatite root implantation on preservation of alveolar ridge)

  • Biocompatibility of dense synthetic hydroxylapatite is well known and the direct bond with adjacent bone developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of clinical application of tooth ash for preservation of alveolar ridge. For this purpose the author performed an experimental implantation of the particulate and root form of both pure dense hydroxylapatite and tooth ash in alveolar sockets immediately after extraction. The pure dense hydroxylapatite was particulate form and root form made by Calciteck Inc. The tooth ash was prepared by incineration at $950^{\circ}C$, and the syrindrical form of the tooth ash was sintered and trimmed to fit the size of the each extraction socket of 10 mongrel dogs. After sugery the clinical, roentgenographical, and histological observation was carried out. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Clinical observation disclosed no dehiscence and exfoliation due to tissue rejection. 2. Vertical resorption of alveolar bone occurred in all experimental sockets as well as the control sites on the roentgenograph. 3. Osteoclastic activity appeared at the inner surfaces of the crestal alveolar bone on the 1st week but disappeared on the 2nd week. 4. There were macrophages in the particulate form on the 1st and 2nd week after surgery but no macrophages appered in the root form. S. New bone formation was developed from the bony wall of experimental sockets and grew to bond with the implant materials. In particulate form the new bone formation did not occur in central zone independently. 6. Tooth ash implant sites were covered with the newly formed bony trabeculation from third week, but Calcitite particles were covered with soft tissue. 7. Generally the healing occurred more rapidly in control sites than in implant sites.

비글견의 피부절개를 위한 $CO_2$ 레이저의 출력 결정 (Determination of $CO_2$ Laser Output Power for the Skin Incision in Beagle Dogs)

  • The objective of this study was to determine output power for skin incision in 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser by measuring (1) the wound depth, (2) initial dermal tissue damage, (3) degree of wound healing at different power (4W, 5W and 6W) in beagle dogs. Three healthy 2-year-old beagle dogs were used. Four 2 cm straight skin incisions were made with 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser on the each dog's both side of dorsal midline in three beagle dogs. The skin incisions were performed for $10{\sim}15$ seconds for same dosage. And then each wound was closed with surgical stapler. At 0, 3, 7 and 14 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological observation. On macroscopic and microscopic observation, initial incisional wound did not show difference in three group. And also re-epithelialization, dermal tissue damage and inflammatory response did not show significant difference among groups. This study reveals that 4W, 5W and 6W may be suitable output power in 0.3 mm spot diameter $CO_2$ laser for the skin incision in beagle dogs.

알러지성 비염 한약제제 KOB의 랫드에서의 13주 반복 경구투여에 의한 독성 연구 (Thirteen-week repeated-dose oral toxicity study of KOB03, a polyherbal medicine for allergic rhinitis, in rats)

  • Objectives : To evaluate the safety of KOB, a polyherbal medicine for allergic rhinitis, we conducted a subchronic toxicology study. Methods : Dried extract of KOB(Lot. No. 11003, yield : 41.1%) was prepared from GLP company (Hanpoong Pharm & Food Co., Ltd). KOB was repeatedly administrated orally of male SD rats at daily dose levels of 500 (G2), 1250 (G3) and 5000 (G4) mg/kg/day for 13 weeks. We recorded the clinical signs of toxicity, body weight, food intake/consumption, optometry, urine analysis, organ weights, hematology, and conducted serum biochemical analysis, necropsy, gross and histological changes in target organs of Sprague-Dawley rats, and clinical chemistry analysis. Results : Neither death nor any toxicological signs were obserbed in KOB at all doses of 500, 1250 and 5000 mg/kg/day during the administration period for thirteen-week. Furthermore, there was no difference in body weight and food-take consumption, optometry, necropsy, organ weight, gross pathological findings, and urine analysis among the groups of rats treated with different doses of KOB, during at the observation period for thirteen-week. The hematological analysis and clinical blood chemistry data were revealed no toxic effects from repeated-dose administration of KOB in rats during the observation period. Conclusions : Based on these results, the no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) of KOB was considered to be 5000 mg/kg/day for male rats under these study conditions.

감초의 기원 및 교잡종 외내부형태 성상 비교연구 (Comparative study of external-intenal morphological shape in origins and hybrids for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)

  • Objectives : The consumption of licorice is large in Korea, but domestic production is insufficient due to the lack of adaptability. This study aimed to provide a morphological basis for adding interspecific hybrid licorice with improved adaptability to pharmacopoeia. Methods : This study was to establish identification criteria for the original plants, external and internal morphology of the authentic herbal medicines (Glycyrrhiza uralensis, G. glabra and G. inflata), market products and artificially interspecific hybrid forms of licorice. For this purpose, previous studies were investigated and visual and histological observations were carried out. We focused on the internal morphology by microscopic observation for securing objectivity. Finally, we proposed the identification keys for precise classification of each part. Results : 1) Original plant : Licorice species in the compendium were distinguished by the number of leaflets, presence of hair on the fruit, curvature and swelling of the fruit. 2) External morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by degree of powderiness, tearing gap, radial structure in the cross section and existence of protrusion of outer epidermis. 3) Internal morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by the degree of development of phloem fiber bundle, development of obliterated sieve, whether the secondary medullary ray are branched. In the case of interspecific hybrids, the characteristics of both species used for hybridization were mixed in all observation methods. Conclusions : These results suggest that the interspecific crossbred licorice is suitable for the pharmacopoeial standard. Therefore, it can be applied as a herbal medicine through additional supplementary study.

Clinical Analysis of Lobular Keloid after Ear Piercing

  • Background: Lobular keloid appears to be a consequence of hypertrophic inflammation secondary to ear piercings performed under unsterile conditions. We wish to understand the pathogenesis of lobular keloids and report operative outcomes with a literature review. Methods: A retrospective review identified 40 cases of lobular keloids between January, 2005 and December, 2010. Patient records were reviewed for preclinical factors such as presence of inflammation after ear piercing prior to keloid development, surgical management, and histopathologic correlation to recurrence. Results: The operation had been performed by surgical core extirpation or simple excision, postoperative lobular compression, and scar ointments. Perivascular infiltration was noted in intra- and extra-keloid tissue in 70% of patients. The postoperative recurrence rate was 10%, and most of the patients satisfied with treatment outcomes. Conclusion: Histological perivascular inflammation is a prominent feature of lobular keloids. Proper surgical treatment, adjuvant treatments, and persistent follow-up observation were sufficient in maintaining a relatively low rates of recurrence.

Maxillary Sinusitis Caused by Mucormycosis

  • A 60-year-old male complained of headache, nasal discharge, and diplopia for over one month with a history of left upper molar extraction, and he had recently experienced severe discharge of purulent exudate from his left antrum. Under the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis, the Caldwell-Luc operation was performed, and several fragments of amorphous white mucoroid materials were removed. In the histological observation, sinus mucosa was relatively well preserved, but showed diffuse infiltration with eosinophilic polymorphonuclears. Huge molds of mucormycosis were associated with the surface of mucosa. He was treated with amphotericin-B deoxycholate, resulting in the uneventful healing of the antral lesion. The current case of antral mucormycosis was very rare but effectively treated by surgical removal of antral mucosa and the following antibiotic therapy for the strong inhabitants of fungal molds. We also presumed that the patient was superinfected with commensal fungus of mucormycosis during broad spectrum antibiotic therapy for the previous dental infection.

동해 중부해역에 출현하는 말쥐치(Thamnaconus modestus) 암컷의 성숙과 산란 (Maturation and spawning of female black scraper, Thamnaconus modestus in the coastal waters off Middle East Sea, Korea)

  • The maturation and spawning of black scraper, Thamnaconus modestus were studied using samples collected monthly from March, 2015 to February, 2016 in the coastal waters off Middle East Sea, Korea. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female was the highest in June. The spawning periods lasted from March to September based on histological observation of female gonad development. The percentage of sexually mature females estimated from a logistic function was over 50% for the size group 18.02 cm (total length, TL). The size of eggs spawned was between 0.40 to 0.58 mm. Fecundity varied between 185,648 and 9,747,250 eggs. The relationship between the fecundity and TL of the fish was expressed in the fecundity equation as $F=0.0297TL^{5.4835}$.

진행성 치주염이 지수 조직에 미치는 영향 (The influence of Advanced Adult Periodontitis on the pulp)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe histopathologically the influence of advanced periodontitis on pulp tissue, and to conclude the correlation between the results with clinical manifestations. The samples were teeth with over 7mm pocket depth and over 50% radiographic bone loss. These were diagnosed to have very poor prognosis and thus planned to be extracted. Those with any of following conditions were excluded from the samples, loss of vitality, periapical pathology, restoration or prosthesis, dental caries, and attrition or abrasion. It was because these conditions could affect pulp without any correlation with periodontal disease. For the experiment, 17 teeth from 11 patients were selected. Average age of patient was 47. Each tooth was examined for following categoris; pocket depth, gingival recession, electric pulp test, mobility, percussion test, sensitivity test. The extracted teeth were fixed buffered neutral formalin solution. It was decalcified using 4% nitric acid. Sliced histological samples observed using light microscope, for pulp status, and severeity of inflammation. 4 samples were excluded due to histologic sample discrepency. Thus 13 samples were subject to observation. 4 showed normal conditions. Focal reversable pulpitis was shown in 5 samples. Chronic pulpitis was observed 1 sample. Pulpal abscess was observed in 3 samples.
