A novel simple approach is presented for the seismic analysis of continuous buried pipelines subject to fault ruptures. The method is based on the minimization of the total dissipated energy during faulting, taking into account the basic factors that affect the problem, namely: a) the pipe yielding under axial and bending load, through the formation of plastic hinges and axial slip; b) the longitudinal friction across the pipe-soil interface; c) the lateral resistance of soil. The advantages and drawbacks of the proposed method are highlighted through a comparison with previous approaches, as well as with finite element calculations accounting for the 3D kinematics of the pipe-soil-fault systems under large deformations. Parametric analyses are also provided to assess the relative influence of the various parameters affecting the problem.

The purpose of this study is to investigate elasto-plastic behaviour and estimate ultimate resistance capacity of the residential-commercial building subjected to lateral force along the height of structure. Four types of residential-commercial building are chosen as analytical models and investigated by pushover analysis. Pushover analysis estimates initial elastic stiffness, post-yielding stiffness, and plastic hinges on each story of structures through three-dimensional nonlinear analysis program CANNY-99. Skeleton curve of bending stiffness model is bilinear, shear stiffness model is trilinear, and axial stiffness model is elastic. Skeleton curve of axial stiffness model has the axial compression and tension stiffness of reinforced concrete members. This study presents the change of inter story drift, story stiffness and hinge of story and member.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the response characteristics of pushover analysis of upper wall-lower frame system with X and Y-directions' lateral load Pushover analysis estimates initial elastic stiffness, post-yielding stiffness, and plastic hinges on each story of structures through three-dimensional nonlinear analysis program. The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) As a result of pushover analysis, the magnitude of nonlinear response and distribution of yield hinge in lower structure are similar with both X and Y directions, but not in upper structure because of different relative stiffness. (2) The maximum drift ratio of roof is larger for X-direction than for Y-direction with respect to magnitude of shear wall areas in upper structure.

For the accuracy correction of the micro-positioning industrial robot, micro-manipulator has been devised. The compliant mechanisms using piezoelectric actuators is necessary geometrically and structurally to be developed by the optimization approaches. The overall geometric advantage as the mechanical efficiencies of the mechanism are considered as objective functions, which respectively art the ratio of output displacement to input force, and their constraints are the vertical notion of supporting leg and the structural strength of manipulation. In optimizing the compliant mechanical amplifier, the sequential linear programming and an optimality criteria method are used for the geometrical dimensions of compliant bridges and flexure hinges. This paper presents the integrated design process which not only can maximize the mechanism feasibilities but also can ensure the positioning accuracy and sufficient workspace. Experiment and simulation are presented for validating the design process through the comparisons of the kinematical and structural performances.
In this study, the seismic performance of a residential building which was damaged in the 1992 Erzincan (Turkey) Earthquake (Ms = 6.8) is performed. Damages on columns due to short columns are estimated analytically implementing the shear hinges and results are compared with the observed damages on the building after the earthquake. In seismic performance evaluation, a deformation based approach is adopted, whereby the structural behavior under external and seismic loads is evaluated. Furthermore, the effects of short columns formed by band windows in basement floors are investigated analytically. The sizes of band windows are parametrically changed in order to understand the effects of short columns on overall building behavior.
Scads of earthquake-resistant systems are being invented around the globe to ensure structural resistance against the lateral forces induced by earthquake loadings considering structural safety, efficiency, and economic aspects. Shear wall and Bracing systems are proved to be two of the most viable solutions for seismic strengthening of structures. In the present study, three numerical models of a G+10 storied building are developed in commercial building analysis software considering shear wall and bracing systems for earthquake resistance. Material nonlinearity is introduced by using plastic hinges. Analyses are performed utilizing two dynamic methods: Response Spectrum analysis and nonlinear Time-history analysis using Kobe and Loma Prieta earthquake data and results are compared to observe the nonlinear behavior of structures. The outcomes exposed that a significant increase in the seismic responses occurs due to the nonlinearity in the building systems. It was also found that building with shear wall exhibits maximum resistance and minimum nonlinearity when subjected to dynamic loadings.
This study proposes a ground anchor using electromagnetic induction and utilizes an extended structure using hinges and links and mounting and sensing using electromagnets. The aim is to secure the anchor force, excluding grout, and to secure various sensing capabilities, including ground behavior. We propose a design based on the drilling diameter of 150 mm, and the materials used were STS304 and Aluminum 6061-T6. Computerized analysis was performed to confirm structural safety and functional implementation. The pull-out experiment was conducted by simulating the bedrock environment on a model earthwork as an experiment to check whether anchor force was generated by the insertion and tension of the anchor. The environmental pollution of grout, the difficulty of removing strands, and the inability to check whether the anchor is seated, which were pointed out as disadvantages of the existing ground anchor, were solved. Therefore, this study suggest that it can be effectively utilized as a secure and monitored anchoring solution in eco-friendly construction practices, including the installation of landslide prevention barriers.
This study aims at evaluating the performance of repairing technique with CFRPs in recovering cyclic performance of damaged columns in flexure in terms of structural response parameters such as strength, dissipated energy, stiffness degradation. A 2/3 scaled substandard reinforced concrete frame was constructed to represent the substandard RC buildings especially in developing countries. These substandard buildings have several structural deficiencies such as strong beam-weak column phenomenon, improper reinforcement detailing and poor material properties. Flexural plastic hinges occurred at the columns ends after testing the substandard specimen under both constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral loading. Afterwards, the damaged columns were externally wrapped with CFRP sheets both in transverse and longitudinal directions and then retested under the same loading protocol. In addition, ambient vibration measurements were taken from the undamaged, damaged and the repaired specimens at each structural repair steps to identify the effectiveness of each repairing step by monitoring the change in the natural frequencies of the tested specimen. The ambient vibration test results showed that the applied repairing technique with external CFRP wrapping was proved to recover stiffness of the pre-damaged specimen. Moreover, the lateral load capacity of the pre-damaged substandard RC frame was restored with externally bonded CFRP sheets.
The composite reinforced concrete and steel (RCS) structural systems have larger structural lateral stiffness, higher inherent structural damping, and faster construction speed than either traditional reinforcement concrete or steel structures. In this paper, four RCS subassemblies with or without the RC slab designed following a strong column-weak beam philosophy were constructed and tested under reversed-cyclic loading. Parameters including the width of slab and composite effect of the RC slab and beam were explored. The test results showed that all specimens performed in a ductile manner with plastic hinges formed in the beam ends near the column faces. The seismic responses of composite connections are influenced significantly by different width of slabs. Compared with that of the steel beam without the RC slab, it was found that the load carrying capacity of composite connections with the RC slab increased by 30% on average, and strength degradation, energy dissipation also had better performance, while the ductility of that were almost the same. Furthermore, the contribution of connection deformation to the overall specimen displacement was analyzed and compared. It decreased approximately 10% due to the coupling effect in the columns and beams with the RC slab. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS joints.

A deployable missile control fin has some structural nonlinearities because of the worn or loose hinges and the manufacturing tolerance. The structural nonlinearity cannot be eliminated completely, and exerts significant effects on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Thus, It is important to establish the accurate deployable missile control fin model. In the present study, the nonlinear dynamic model of 4he deployable missile control fin is developed using a substructure synthesis method. The deployable missile control fin can be subdivided Into two substructures represented by linear dynamic models and a nonlinear hinge with structural nonlinearities. The nonlinear hinge model is established by using a system identification method, and the substructure modes are improved using the Frequency Response Method. A substructure synthesis method Is expanded to couple the substructure models and the nonlinear hinge model, and the nonlinear dynamic model of the fin is developed. Finally, the established nonlinear dynamic model of the deployable missile control fin is verified by dynamic tests. The established model is In good agreement with test results, showing that the present approach is useful in aeroelastic stability analyses such as time-domain nonlinear flutter analysis.
