  • A 14-month-old Thoroughbred colt with hind limbs lameness was referred to Equine Hospital of Jeju National University. During physical examination, the patient could not walk in a straight line but wobbled especially with hind limbs. He hesitated when backing and crossed hind limbs while circling tightly by protracting the outer hind limb keeping the inner hind limb stationed. Stenosis was observed between the 2nd (C2) and 3rd (C3), and the C3 and 4th (C4) cervical vertebrae on radiographs. The colt diagnosed as cervical stenotic myelopathy (CSM) based on the clinical signs and radiological findings. To confirm the diagnosis, postmortem computed tomography (CT) and histopathologic examination were performed after the euthanasia. The CT images revealed severe compression of the spinal cavity and cord between C3 and C4 cervical vertebrae. Grossly, there was compression of the spinal cord between the C3 and C4 cervical vertebrae. Histopathologically, severe axonal swelling and demyelination characterized by vacuolation and cavity formation were observed in the white matter of the spinal cord, especially in C3 and C4. CSM is problematic in the horse racing industry because of abnormal walking. This case report of CSM may offer information for diagnosis of the disease in the equine veterinary fields in the Republic of Korea.

  • A one-year-old, 3.25 kg intact male Chinchilla cat presented with acute right hind limb paralysis. Diagnostic imaging studies found cardiomegaly with interstitial lung pattern, abnormal mitral valve leaflets without maximum opening at the end of the ventricular diastole and during atrial systole and severe mitral inflow obstruction. Based on these findings and its young age, the case was diagnosed as congenital mitral valve stenosis. Treatment was directed to stabilize clinical conditions related to heart failure, to prevent further formation of thrombus and to relieve pain associated with thromboembolism. After one month of therapy, hind limb motor function was fully recovered.

  • A Maltese (case 1) and a Pomeranian (case 2) presented with acute right and left hind limb weight-bearing lameness. On physical examination, they exhibited severe pain and crepitus on the coxofemoral joint of affected hind limb. In addition, decreased thigh girth measurements were noted compared with the opposite leg. Radiological exam revealed necrotic areas in the femoral head of affected hind limb. These dogs were diagnosed with Legg-$Calv{\acute{e}}$-Perthes disease (LCPD). The dogs underwent micro total hip replacement (THR). After surgery, at 3 years (case 1) and 7 months (case 2), both dogs recovered normal activity. The thigh girth and lameness scores were apparently improved in the affected limbs of both dogs. No complications of prosthesis implants, such as loosening, were noted. The clinical outcomes of these cases indicate that dogs with LCPD can be successfully treated with micro THR and have a good prognosis immediately after surgery.

  • In oriental medicine, it is known that Eucommiae Cortex (EC) has strengthening and rehabilitative effects on the bone-muscle dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of EC on the skeletal muscle atrophy. The muscle atrophy was induced by unilateral transection of the sciatic nerve in Sprague-Dawley rats. EC (water-extract, 170mg/100 g body weight) was treated once a day for 12 days. In this study, the effect of EC examined the muscle weight of hind limb, cross section areas of muscle fibers, fiber type compositions, apoptosis related factors (Bax and Bcl-2). EC reduced muscle atrophy in soleus (SOL), medial gastrocnemius (MGT), extensor digitorum longus, and tibialis posterior significantly in the damaged hind limb. EC increased type-I muscle fibers and decreased type-II muscle fibers significantly in SOL of the damaged hind limb. EC enlarged cross section areas of type-I and type-II muscle fibers significantly in SOL. EC enlarged cross section areas of type-I and type-II muscle fibers significantly in. EC reduced apoptotic nuclei and atrophic muscle fibers in SOL and MGT. EC reduced Bax positive muscle nuclei in SOL and MGT. EC up-regulated Bcl-2 positive muscle fibers in SOL and MGT. These results suggest that EC has an anti-atrophic effect and anti-apoptotic effect against myonuclear apoptosis induced by the peripheral nerve damage.

  • To demonstrate the effect of physical irritancy(massages) on the skeletal muscles of immobilization ddY mice models induced by right side sciatic nerve neurectomy, the cross sectional histological profiles of the muscularis (M) gastrocnemius, M. tibialis cranialis and M. tibialis caudalis were observed after 28 days of treatment of physical irritancy with the changes of body weight thickness of hind limb and individual muscle weights. In addition, changes of demonstrated with diameter of individual muscle fiber and muscle fasciculata, and number of muscle fiber in each of three types of muscles located in the calf. The massages were used in this study as physical irritancy. The experimental groups were divided into five groups, 1) Sham-operated group(Sham), 2) Neurectomized but not physical irritated control group(Control), 3) Neurectomized and physical irritated at knee pint regions(T1), 4) Neurectomized and physical irritated at calf regions(T2), and 5) Neurectomized and physical irritated at achilles tendon regions(T3). The experimental animals were used 5 per groups. The changes of number or diameter of muscle fiber in each muscles were calculated using automated image analyzer. The results are as follow : Thickness(diameter) of muscle fiber of M. gastrocnemius, M. tibialis cranialis and M. tibialis cranialis in right side of hind limb were remarkedly decreased in Control, T1, T2 and T3 groups compared to that of Sham group. However, the thickness was significantly increased in physical irritated groups compared to that of Control group in followed order : T3

  • We investigated enzyme activity and histochemical changes in hind limb of mouse treated with 6-aminonicotinamide (6-AN). The activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and creatine phosphokinase in 6-AN treated group were significantly higher than those of the control and pair-fed groups. Also, the activity of lactic dehydrogenase in 6-AN treated group was the highest among the three groups, whereas that of the pair-fed group were higher than that of the control group. In the 6-AN treated group, oxidative histochemical stains, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reductase (NADH), succinyl dehydrogenase (SDH) showed increased scattered fibers in 6-AN treated subsarcolemma. Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) stain showed decreased up to 85% in 6-AN treated fibers. These results demonstrate that 6-AN antagonizes cell metabolism and induces the morphological deformity like the other mitochondrial muscle diseases. Therefore, we suppose that these data would be useful indexes for disclosing the mechanism of mitochondrial muscle disease.
