  • Overseas examples of the characterization stage of site selection proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency were reviewed to highlight the factors necessary for consideration in the deep disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Studies in Sweden, Finland, the USA, and Canada were considered. Site investigations in Sweden and Finland commonly covered the fields of geology, hydrogeology, and hydrogeochemistry using similar field investigation techniques. The USA considered survey groups and factors under pre- and post-lockdown guidelines, as well as those for desaturated and saturated surveys. involving geophysical, hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, mechanical/physical, and thermal-characterization investigations. Canada provided a list of investigative methods for both preliminary and detailed site assessments including geological, physical, boring, hydrological, laboratory testing, and chemical analysis studies. Results of this study should elucidate site-selection investigation factors and survey methods applicable to Korea.

  • To address challenges in classifying clouds and snow cover when calculating ground reflectance in Near-UltraViolet (UV) wavelengths, this study introduces a methodology that combines cloud data from the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) and the Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI)satellites for snow cover analysis. The proposed approach aims to enhance the quality of surface reflectance calculations, and combined cloud data were generated by integrating GEMS cloud data with AMI cloud detection data. When applied to compute GEMS surface reflectance, this fusion approach significantly mitigated underestimation issues compared to using only GEMS cloud data in snow-covered regions, resulting in an approximately 17% improvement across the entire observational area. The findings of this study highlight the potential to address persistent underestimation challenges in snow areas by employing fused cloud data, consequently enhancing the accuracy of other Level-2 products based on improved surface reflectivity.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed major changes in our work environment, underscoring the critical role of workplace flexibility. While a wealth of research exists on specific flexible work strategies and schedules, a broader understanding of workplace flexibility has been somewhat overlooked. This study aimed to bridge this gap by examining the correlation between workplace flexibility and organizational commitment. Our sample consisted of 300 employees from foreign businesses in the ICT(information and communications technology) service sector and the manufacturing industry, along with those from the top 50 leading Korean enterprises. We bifurcated workplace flexibility into two distinct categories for this study: quantitative and qualitative. Our results revealed that within the quantitative category, the flexibility of continuity of work and flexible place significantly enhanced organizational commitment. Interestingly, the flexibility of work schedules didn't have a marked impact on commitment levels. On the qualitative side, job autonomy and teamwork emerged as significant drivers of organizational commitment. It's worth noting that qualitative aspects of workplace flexibility had a more pronounced effect on organizational commitment than the quantitative elements. These findings highlight the necessity of approaching workplace flexibility from a comprehensive perspective, embracing both its quantitative and qualitative dimensions. For businesses aiming to maximize the benefits of flexibility, it's essential to cultivate a culture of open communication, champion collaboration, and prioritize job autonomy and teamwork. Establishing a work environment that actively supports feedback-oriented communication stands as a key component in this endeavor.

  • This study was conducted to investigate how maize (Zea maize L.) growth and yield were affected by irrigation and fertigation using a subsurface drip system. The system consisted of a buried (40 cm underground) drip pipe that can be used in a semi-permanent manner without affecting agricultural work on the ground. The amount of water required for the fertigation treatment was determined to be 24.3 tons 10a-1 for the sandy loam soil used in this experimental field. Fertigation treatments based on the previously calculated 24.3 tons 10a-1 were carried out as topdressing applications. They were applied through the subsurface drip system with the following fertilizer concentration (nitrogen only, written in kg 10a-1: N 4, N 6, N 8, N 10 ). The other treatments were irrigation only and control (non-treatment). The results indicated that the N 8 treatment was the most effective, increasing yield by 30% and 14% compared with the control and irrigation treatments, respectively. These results highlight the effectiveness of fertigation (N 8 kg 10a-1) at V6 and R1 stage as a form of topdressing fertilization using a subsurface drip system for achieving a high yield and stable maize production.

  • The brain houses vital hormonal regulatory structures such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which may confer unique susceptibilities to critical illness-related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI) in patients with neurological disorders. In addition, the frequent use of steroids for therapeutic purposes in various neurological conditions may lead to the development of steroid insufficiency. This abstract aims to highlight the significance of understanding these relationships in the context of patient care and management for physicians. Neurological disorders may predispose patients to CIRCI due to the role of the brain in hormonal regulation. Early recognition of CIRCI in the context of neurological diseases is essential to ensure prompt and appropriate intervention. Moreover, the frequent use of steroids for treating neurological conditions can contribute to the development of steroid insufficiency, further complicating the clinical picture. Physicians must be aware of these unique interactions and be prepared to evaluate and manage patients with CIRCI and steroid insufficiency in the context of neurological disorders. This includes timely diagnosis, appropriate steroid administration, and careful monitoring for potential adverse effects. A comprehensive understanding of the interplay between neurological disease, CIRCI, and steroid insufficiency is critical for optimizing patient care and outcomes in this complex patient population.

  • On September 28, 2020, the Korea Fair Trade Commission introduced a proposed bill entitled the "Fair Online Platform Intermediary Transactions Act." We quantify the impact of this proposed act on Naver, Korea's major digital platform. Finding a proper control unit is not an easy task in social science studies. We overcome this caveat by constructing a synthetic version of Naver using Abadie & Gardeazabal's (2003) synthetic control method. It appears that the economic cost of the proposed act is not negligible at all. Naver's opportunity loss amounted to 16.18% of its market capitalization (approximately 8.5 trillion won in comparison with its pre-regulation market capitalization). Any regulation-based approaches to resolving digital platform issues have both promises and pitfalls. The results highlight that regulatory bodies should carefully gauge the impact of such regulations, as we have seen with Naver's case.

  • This study originated from recognition of importance of firefighters' decision-making in fire response, coupled with existing gap in research. By utilizing Q-methodology, the study aimed to categorize firefighters' subjectivity in fire response decision-making. Through this categorization, the study sought to highlight insights into the current technological and data limitations, as well as potential directions for future R&D in the field of firefighting. The findings of the study revealed that firefighters' subjectivity could be classified into three factors: "emphasis on direct information related to rescue," "emphasis on information related to the target property," and "emphasis on information related to command and coordination." The study theoretically confirmed that the subjectivity of firefighters' decision-making in fire response is partially influenced by their experiences and job. Additionally, the study's significance lay in its approach of collecting specific decision-making factors in fire response, moving beyond general theoretical models. Furthermore, from a policy perspective, the typification of decision-making factors contributed to connecting the identified data-based administrative needs from prior studies. Insights from the study emphasized the importance of leveraging on-site experience in Korea to aid decision-making, calling for the development of equipment and data collection methods that can rapidly and accurately assess on-site conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of music therapy on enhancing self-awareness and intrinsic motivation among patients with schizophrenia, particularly those experiencing motivational deficits. This study, primarily based on quantitative analyses supplemented by qualitative insights, included six adults (three males and three females) across 8 weekly sessions proactive music activities based on the exploration of musical emotion, each lasting 60 minutes, from October 5 to November 16, 2023. Data collection and analysis focused on the last five sessions, from the fourth to the eighth. Although no statistically significant changes were detected, likely due to the study's short duration, qualitative data from in-depth interviews indicate that music therapy contributed to enhanced motivation and improved self-perception in participants. They demonstrated better emotional articulation, self-awareness, and communication skills, which not only increased their intrinsic motivation but also led to an improved perception of their life quality. Individual variability was noted, however, indicating that these outcomes could differ among participants. These results highlight music therapy's potential as a valuable intervention for enhancing self-awareness and reigniting motivation in individuals with schizophrenia, suggesting a further research to corroborate these findings over longer periods.

  • In this study, based on accident cases of manned and unmanned tower cranes, the types and causes of accidents were analyzed and tower crane accident prevention measures were proposed accordingly. As a result, 'lack of communication' was commonly analyzed as the biggest cause of accidents. Therefore, in this study, we investigated domestic and international systems and laws regarding signalmen responsible for communication between tower crane operators and workers and proposed the following three improvement methods. First, the signalman system must be legally and institutionally reestablished. Second, national agencies and private organizations with expertise should create standardized training manuals and distribute them to signalman educators, and create checklists to manage educators. Third, in the case of a site using a tower crane, the employer must mandatorily deploy a signalman with professional qualifications. Lastly, the results of this study are expected to highlight the differences in accident types and causes of manned and unmanned tower cranes and the need for legal and institutional improvement in the signal system.

  • Ecosystem observatories are burgeoning globally in an endeavour to detect national and global scale trends in the state of biodiversity and ecosystems in an era of rapid environmental change. In this paper we highlight the additional importance of regional scale outcomes of such infrastructure, through an introduction to the Great Western Woodlands TERN (Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network) SuperSite, and key findings from three gradient plot networks that are part of this infrastructure. The SuperSite was established in 2012 in the 160,000 km2 Great Western Woodlands region, in a collaboration involving 12 organisations. This region is globally significant for its largely intact, diverse landscapes, including the world's largest Mediterranean-climate woodlands and highly diverse sandplain shrublands. The dominant woodland eucalypts are fire-sensitive, requiring hundreds of years to regrow after fire. Old-growth woodlands are highly valued by Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, and managing impacts of climate change and the increasing extent of intense fires are key regional management challenges. Like other TERN SuperSites, the Great Western Woodlands TERN SuperSite includes a core eddy-covariance flux tower measuring exchanges of carbon, water and energy between the vegetation and atmosphere, along with additional environmental and biodiversity monitoring around the tower. The broader SuperSite incorporates three gradient plot networks. Two of these represent aridity gradients, in sandplains and woodlands, informing regional climate adaptation and biodiversity management by characterising biodiversity turnover along spatial climate gradients and acting as sentinels for ecosystem change over time. For example, the sandplains transect has demonstrated extremely high spatial turnover rates in plant species, that challenge traditional approaches to biodiversity conservation. The third gradient plot network represents a 400-year fire-age gradient in Eucalyptus salubris woodlands. It has enabled characterisation of post-fire recovery of vegetation, birds and invertebrates over multi-century timeframes, and provided tools that are directly informing management to reduce stand-replacing fires in eucalypt woodlands. By building regional partnerships and applying globally or nationally consistent methodologies to regional scale questions, ecological observatories have the power not only to detect national and global scale trends in biodiversity and ecosystems, but to directly inform environmental decisions that are critical at regional scales.
