  • A new consensus algorithm for the prediction of tropical cyclone track has been developed. Conventional consensus is a simple average of a few fixed models that showed the good performance in track prediction for the past few years. Meanwhile, the consensus in this study is a weighted average of a few models that may change for every individual forecast time. The models are selected as follows. The first step is to find the analogous past tropical cyclone tracks to the current track. The next step is to evaluate the model performances for those past tracks. Finally, we take the weighted average of the selected models. More weight is given to the higher performance model. This new algorithm has been named as DYTRAP (DYnamic data-base Typhoon tRAck Prediction) in the sense that the data base is used to find the analogous past tracks and the effective models for every individual track prediction case. DYTRAP has been applied to all 2009 tropical cyclone track prediction. The results outperforms those of all models as well as all the official forecasts of the typhoon centers. In order to prove the real usefulness of DYTRAP, it is necessary to apply the DYTRAP system to the real time prediction because the forecast in typhoon centers usually uses 6-hour or 12-hour-old model guidances.

  • Phonological awareness, or consciousness of speech sounds and operational skill with them, develops in the order word > syllable > phoneme, over the ages of four to seven. Among the various types of phonological awareness tasks, the deletion task has a higher level of difficulty because it requires operation and deletion of sounds within words. This task also has a high correlation with reading proficiency. This study utilized a deletion task with 20 questions to see how operational development depended on age and gender. The deletion task, with 20 questions, was tested on four- to six-year old children developing normally (N = 90). The results showed that phonological awareness performance improved with age. This age effect was not accompanied by a gender effect; age and gender interacted. The study confirmed the development of phonological awareness in four- to six-year-old children who were developing normally. The deletion task can be used to effectively detect the risk of difficulties with phonological awareness in preschoolers with speech, language, and reading problems.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the presence of ipsilesional movement deficit, with segmental performance in each proximal or distal upper extremity. The visuoperceptual complex task of the ipsilesional upper extremity was investigated in patients with unilateral brain damage and a control group of healthy sex-age-matched controls. Tracking movements were tested in the proximal and distal upper extremities. Movements were measured by the accuracy index, which was normalized to each subject's own range of motion and took into account any differences between subjects in the excursion of the tracking target. The findings revealed that stroke patients experienced difficulties with tracking movement of both proximal and distal segments in the upper extremities on the so-called "non-affected side", irrespectively of the extent of patient's age, time since onset, or severity of contralateral upper extremity. Therefore, the unilateral brain damage affected ipsilateral motor function of the proximal and distal upper limbs in the performance of complex motor tasks, requiring central processing and the higher order cognitive function in the integrity of both hemispheres.

  • A fuzzy-sliding mode controller is presented to control the dynamics of semi-active suspension systems of vehicles using magneto-rheological (MR) fluid dampers. A full car model is used to design and evaluate the performance of the proposed semi-active controlled suspension system. Four mixed mode MR dampers are designed, manufactured, and integrated with four independent sliding mode controllers. The siding mode controller is designed to decrease the energy consumption and maintain robustness. In order to overcome the chattering of the sliding mode controllers, a fuzzy logic control strategy is merged into the sliding mode controller. The proposed fuzzy-sliding mode controller is designed and fabricated. The performance of the semi-active suspensions is evaluated in both the time and frequency domains. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed fuzzy-sliding mode controller can effectively suppress the vibration of vehicles and improve their ride comfort and handling stability. Furthermore, it is shown that the "chattering" of the sliding mode controller is smoothed when it is integrated with a fuzzy logic control strategy. Although the cost function of the fuzzy-sliding mode control is a slightly higher than that of a classical LQR controller, the control effectiveness and robustness are enhanced considerably.

  • Ground-source (Geothermal) heat pump (GSHP) systems can achieve a higher coefficient of performance than conventional air-source heat pump (ASHP) systems. However, GSHP systems are not widespread in Japan because of their expensive boring costs. The authors have developed a GSHP system that employs the cast-in-place concrete pile foundations of a building as heat exchangers in order to reduce the initial boring cost. In this system, eight U-tubes are arranged around the surface of a cast-in-place concrete pile foundation. The heat exchange capability of this system, subterranean temperature changes and heat pump performance were investigated in a foil-scale experiment. As a result, the average values for heat rejection were 186${\sim}$201 W/m (for pile, 25 W/m per Pair of tubes) while cooling. The average COP of this system was 4.6 while cooling; rendering this system more effective in energy saving terms than the typical ASHP systems. The initial cost of construction per unit for heat extraction and rejection is ${\yen}$72/W for this system, whereas it is f300/W for existing standard borehole systems.

  • In the present study investigated the heat dissipation characteristics of the natural convection type radiator by using the latent heat from a solid-liquid PCM(Phase Change Material). Total radiator volume size is $423{\times}295{\times}83\;mm$ and PCM tank size is $398{\times}270{\times}26\;mm$. The objective was elapsed time lower than maximum operating temperature. Experimental condition, in order to study the effects of the phase-change phenomenon, carried out the various mass flow rate, input electric power, and heat of fusion temperature of two type PCMs. For the above experimental conditions, the cooling performance by using the latent heat showed that heat absorption rate performs for about 3 hours from using PCM $38^{\circ}C$. However, cooling performance by using PCM $50^{\circ}C$ showed higher than surface temperature of heater block because of heat of fusion.

  • In this paper, hydrodynamic performance of FSRU which is designed to operate in North America East Coast assessed. In order to estimate the dynamic performance, the numerical analysis is carried out based on a time domain simulation program to solve the coupled dynamics for floater and mooring lines which is as well known program as DNV SESAM package. The target operating area is East coast of North America and the model test was carried out based on the meta-ocean data of the area. The mooring analysis is only considered wave without other environment condition at this time. The results of the numerical analysis show the under-estimated results at the higher wave height condition. But the tendency is very similar. Also, the motion response show good agreement compared with model test.

  • Optimization of ionomer solution was conducted in order to improve the performance of MEAs in PEMPC. The interface between membrane and electrodes in MEAs is crucial region determining fuel cell performance as well as ORR reaction at cathode. Through the modification of Nafion ionomer content at the interface between membrane and electrodes, an optimal content was obtained with Nafion 115 membranes. Two times higher current density was obtained with the outer Nafion sprayed MEA compared with the non-sprayed one. In addition, the symmetrical impedance spectroscopy mode (SM) exhibited that the resistances of membrane area, proton hydration, and charge transfer decreased as the outer Nafion is sprayed. From the polarization curves and SM, the highest current density and the lowest resistance was obtained at the outer ionomer content of $0.15\;mg\;cm^{-2}$.

  • An underwater motion measurement system was constructed for applications to the model basin. A commercial motion capture system, FALCON of Motion Analysis Corp., which corrects automatically the distortion caused by refraction of the light passing through water and air, was adopted for underwater motion measurement. The modifications of FALCON system were performed: waterproofing camera housings, markers, connectors, and a new blue ring lighter. the accuracy of the motion measurement was obtained within the calibration error of 0.87mm in average and 0.89mm in standard deviation for the distance of 500mm between two markers on the calibration device. the volume of $2100mm(length)\times2100mm(breadth)\times2300mm(Height)$ was covered with 4 cameras of the underwater motion measurement system. For the performance verification, motion measurement test of a vertical mooring chain model excited at the top end was carried out. The 3D motions of mooring model were measured with variable amplitude and period of the forced excitation. Higher order motions of the mooring model were observed as the excitation period decreases. the performance of the system was verified by successfully measuring 3D motion of mooring model.

  • Distribution Management System(DMS) ienhancing distribution automation system-based operation efficiency is an optimized system by various operational applications in a distribution network. DMS employs various applications like topology reconfiguration, volt/var control, and restoration at events such as overload, voltage violation, and a fault in a distribution system. An operation efficiency to employ multi-applications as restoration with short-term load forecasting is higher than a performance by a single application; and the applications are accomplished by an operator’s control. Applications’ combination is determined by various alarm information which means critical issues in order to operate a distribution system. Thus, this paper proposes an application management system which can configure application combination, control applications depending on alarm information and check their performance condition. The proposed application management system can be customized by operator easily and have high operation efficiency and reliability because it is worked by reviewed alarm information from operator.
