  • In this paper the projective controls, previously derived to preserve the dynamic modes of a state-feedback reference system, are extended to allow the preservation of the modes of a general output-feedback reference system. In general, the extension allows projective controls to be used as a controller approximation technique, where a reduced-order controller is designed to approximate the closed-loop behavior of the higher-order reference controller. This extension is useful if the best available reference control for the system is an output-feedback control. An example shows that the increased design freedom of proposed design method allows the stabilization of a given plant using a lower-order controller than the projective controls with state-feedback reference.

  • The UHF electromagnetic waves excited by PD pulses propagate along the GIS busbar not only TEM mode, but also TE and TM mode. Generally the waves detected by the UHF sensors are those of high order modes and such waves can only propagate the higher than cut-off frequency. In this paper, computed cut-off frequency of 362[kV] GIS by each modes and simulated electromagnetic field of each propagation modes by FEM(Finite Element Method) program. Frequency band of each TEmn/TMmn modes were determinated by simulation results and were discussed optimal position of UHF sensor from this results.

  • This investigation presents an efficient method for identifying modal characteristics from the measured displacement, velocity and acceleration signals of multiple channels on structural systems. A Vector Backward Auto-Regressive model (VBAR) that describes the relationship between the output information in different time steps is used to establish a backward state equation. Generally, the accuracy of the identified dynamic characteristics can be improved by increasing the order of the Auto-Regressive model (AR) in cases of measurement of data under noisy circumstances. However, a higher-order AR model also induces more numerical modes, only some of which are the system modes. The proposed VBAR model provides a clear characteristic boundary to separate the system modes from the spurious modes. A numerical example of a lumped-mass model with three DOFs was established to verify the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, an offshore platform model was experimentally employed as an application case to confirm the proposed VBAR method can be applied to real-world structures.

  • The resonance frequencies, shunt impedances and Q-values for the higher-order modes in our designed cavity are calculated by the computer codes URMEL and MAFIA. A new computer code is developed to calculate the complex tune shifts for the randomness of the higher-order mode frequencies due to the construction errors of a cavity. The results with the construction errors are compared to those fo without error cases for the dipole mode and quadrupole mode.

  • Among other critical conditions in rotor systems the large non-linear vibration excited by bearing non-linearity causes the rotor failure. For reducing this catastrophic failure and predictive detection of this phenomenon the analysis of orthotropic bearing non-linearity in rotor system using higher order frequency response functions (HFRFs) is conducted and is shown to be theoretically feasible as that of non-rotating structures. The complex HFRFs based on the Volterra series are newly developed for the process and investigated their features by using the simple forms of the FRFs associated with the forward and the backward modes.

  • Sectional added masses of an elastic beam vibrating vertically on the free surface in higher harmonic modes are evaluated. Hydrodynamic interactions between neighboring sections, which strip theory ignores, are considered for modal wave lengths of the order of magnitude of cross-sectional dimensions of the body. An approximate solution of modified Helmholtz equation which becomes a singular perturbation problem at small wave lengths is secured to get an analytic expression for added masses attending higher harmonic modes. As a bound of the present theory, the modified Helmholtz equation is solved for the long flat plate vibrating at high frequency on the water surface without any limitations on modal frequency. Finally, extensive series of numerical calculations are carried out for ship-like forms. It is found that when modal wave length is comparable to or shorter than a typical cross-sectional dimension of a body, sectional interaction effects are large which result in considerable reductions in added masses. For a fuller section, the ratio of added mass reduction is greater. In the limit of vanishing sectional area, the added masses approach to that of flat plate of equal beam. It is shown that the added mass distribution for a Legendre modal from can be determined form the present theory and that the results agree with the extensive three-dimensional determination of Vorus and Hilarides.

  • The acoustic performance of reactive type single expansion chamber can be calculated theoretically by plane wave theory. But higher order modes should be considered to widen the frequency range. Munjal has suggested the method for analyzing the acoustic properties of simple expansion chamber with taking into consideration of higher order mode of inlet/outlet. But his method cannot predict the acoustic properties exactly when the dimensions of inlet/outlet and expansion chamber have not integer multiples. In this paper the new method was suggested to overcome the shortcomings of Munjal's method The predictions by this method were also compared with those by the finite element method.

  • Wind turbine blades are increasing in magnitude without a proportional increase of stiffness for which reason geometrical and inertial nonlinearities become increasingly important. Often these effects are analysed using a nonlinear truncated expansion in undamped fixed base mode shapes of a blade, modelling geometrical and inertial nonlinear couplings in the fundamental flap and edge direction. The purpose of this article is to examine the applicability of such a reduced-degree-of-freedom model in predicting the nonlinear response and stability of a blade by comparison to a full model based on a nonlinear co-rotating FE formulation. By use of the reduced-degree-of-freedom model it is shown that under strong resonance excitation of the fundamental flap or edge modes, significant energy is transferred to higher modes due to parametric or nonlinear coupling terms, which influence the response and stability conditions. It is demonstrated that the response predicted by such models in some cases becomes instable or chaotic. However, as a consequence of the energy flow the stability is increased and the tendency of chaotic vibrations is reduced as the number of modes are increased. The FE model representing the case of infinitely many included modes, is shown to predict stable and ordered response for all considered parameters. Further, the analysis shows that the reduced-degree-of-freedom model of relatively low order overestimates the response near resonance peaks, which is a consequence of the small number of included modes. The qualitative erratic response and stability prediction of the reduced order models take place at frequencies slightly above normal operation. However, for normal operation of the wind turbine without resonance excitation 4 modes in the reduced-degree-of-freedom model perform acceptable.
