Effect of Potassium Application on Yield-Related Characters and Contents of Starch and Hydrocyanic Acid of Cassava

  • Higher level of KCl application stimulated both leaf area index and leaf area duration in all cassava varieties, while the leaf and tuber number of the bitter varieties (high cyanide-level varieties) decreased in proportion to the level of KCl application. The root/shoot (R/S) ratio and harvest index (HI) were negatively related with the level of KCl application in all cassava varieties. The bitter varieties obtained the lowest R/S ratio at the level of 100 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, while the sweet varieties (low cyanide-level varieties) acquired the highest values at the level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. Also, the sweet varieties showed the lowest HI at the level of 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, but the bitter varieties at the level of 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. At 6 - 8 months after planting, the sweet varieties tended to obtain higher starch content of roots (tubers) at the level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, while the bitter varieties at the level of 150 - 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. Relatively lower level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ was more appropriate for decreasing hydrocyanic acid (HCN) content of roots (tubers) in the sweet varieties at the harvest time, and the level of 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ was adequate to decrease not only HCN content of leaves but also that of roots (tubers) in the bitter varieties during the growing period. To obtain higher yield and starch content of tubers, and lower HCN content of roots (tubers), it was recommended that the sweet varieties are applied with the level of 50 - 100 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ and the bitter varieties with the level of 150 - 200 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, respectively, in Latosol soils of Bogor areas, West Java.

  • This experiment was conducted to breed the Boxthorn varieties with resistance to Anthracnose, good quality and high yielding potential in 1984 to 1986(3 years).The character of "Yu seong 1" with resistance to Anthracnose and "Yu seong 2"with good quality and high yielding potential are fellows;1, The plant type of "Yu seong 1" was semi-elect type but became to electtype after 60C" rediation and yield was decreased because of the number of flowers.2. The yield of "Yu seong 2" was the highest of all varieties.3. The quality(Extract and Betain contents) of "Yu seong 2" was the best ofall varieties and visible character was good.The results of this experinent showed that "Yu seong 1" should be promisinglines in south area because of resistance Anthracnose and "Yu seong 2" should bepromising lines in north area.hracnose and "Yu seong 2" should bepromising lines in north area.orth area.

Harvesting schedule effects on forage yield and nutritive values in low-lignin alfalfa

  • Under the four-cut system, low-lignin alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) may extend harvesting intervals improving harvest management flexibility and producing forage products with higher nutritive values. The objective of this study was to compare forage yield and nutritive values of low-lignin and conventional alfalfa varieties when applied to six different harvest schedules in the first (2016) and second (2017) production years. There were 12 treatments of two alfalfa varieties as whole plots and six harvest schedules as subplots. Across harvest schedules, there were four cuttings in two production years. Three harvest intervals including "Standard" (high quality, HQ), "Standard+5-day" (medium quality, MQ), and "Standard+10-day" (high yield, HY) were chosen for the first cutting, and 30-day (HQ) and 35-day (HY) for the second cuttings. The third and fourth cuttings in 2016 were timed near final harvest date and in 2017 occurred at 35-day (MQ) and 40-day (HY). Variety by harvest schedule interaction was not significant, but the whole plot and sub-plot effects were significant. Hi-Gest 360 was consistently higher in nutritive value and with a similar yield as Gunner. Harvest schedules did not consistently differ in forage yield and nutritive values. HS-1 ("Standard" + 35-day + Medium Quality + High Yield) with shorter first two cutting intervals provided lower acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), higher relative feed value (RFV), and similar forage yield compared to other schedules. HS-1 had the highest economic incomes when considering RFV and yield among the six different harvest schedules.

Adaptability and yield of Korean chipping potato varieties (Solanum tuberosum L.) in vietnam conditions

  • The experiments were carried out in open experimental field of Field Crops Research Institute, Hai Duong, Vietnam in Winter Spring seasons 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 for finding high yielding of Korean chipping potato varieties which are adaptable to Vietnam condition. Six varieties of Korean potato (G1, G2, G4, G10, B1, B2) were experimented. The control variety (G6) was Atlantic which has long been a standard chip variety. The results showed that, for a hill, there was positive correlation between number of stems and number of tubers. The hill yield also showed highly relation to the plant height and number of tubers. Even though the growth and yield of potatoes grown in the season 2016-2017 were significant higher than these of potatoes grown in the season 2015-2016, their percentages of tubers infected by scab disease were much higher. This is probably because of irregular soil moisture content at the tuber forming duration. While G1, G6 and B1 are white flesh varieties, the remaining are yellow flesh varieties. There are two shapes types among experimented varieties: oblong (G1, G10, B1) and round shape (G2, G4, G6, B2). The total yields of varieties G1, G2, B1, B2 were higher than the total yield of the control variety from 16.5-49.4% in the season 2015-2016 and from 39.8-75.6% in the season 2016-2017.

식량생산능력 향상을 위한 농작물 육종전략 (Breeding Strategies to Increase Production Potential of Major Food Crops in Korea)

  • Self-sufficiency ratio of food crops in Korea is estimated under $20{\%}$ in 2010 because total food consumption including feed will be increased. but food grain production will be decreased. It is necessary to maintain the optimum level of food self-sufficiency rate to secure national food demand/supply balance and non-trade and multiple function of agriculture in Korea. It will be possible to produce more food grains having the acceptable quality if the appropriate policy and cropping techniques are developed and practised in future. Breeding for high yielding varieties should be the first target to raise the production potential of food crops . Number of varieties developed during last 30 years is counted as 353 in food crops. New varieties developed in 1990s showed the higher yield potential and the improved agronomic characteristics compared with 1970s and 1980s varieties. But number of varieties planted on the farmer's field over $5{\%}$ of national planting area is less than one third of total varieties developed Breeding efforts to maintain planting area of main food crops should be focussed on consumer's demand and farmer's need. They are the best quality variety in each field of crop utilization, the newly designed variety adapting to changes of natural, rural and cropping environment, and the higher yielding variety. It is also needed to develop new quality crop varieties for inducing more consumption of crop grain produced in Korea for direct food or processing. Development of barley varieties for animal feed. high income soybean varieties, high quality wheat variety. and super yielding rice and barley varieties are also needed to keep or maximize national food production potential. In order to establish the appropriate cropping technique for domestic food security, the strong and continuous interest and financial support on crop breeding are required, and the inter-disciplinary and inter-institutionary researches should be strengthened for successful crop breeding.

간척지 재배 벼 품종의 수량과 품질과의 관계 (Relationship between Yield and Quality of Rice Varieties Grown in Reclaimed Saline Paddy Field)

  • 간척지 논에서 고품질 쌀 생산을 위한 기초 자료를 얻고자 2001년 농업기반공사 김포간척지에서 9개 벼 품종의 수량과 단백질 함량 및 식미치의 관계를 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 쌀 수량은 식미계에 의한 식미치와 고도로 유의한 부상관(r=-0.49$^{**}$ )을 나타내었다. 수량이 낮은 수라벼의 식미치가 가장 높았고 수량이 높은 대안벼와 진품벼는 식미치가 가장 낮았다. 2. 간척지 재배 백미의 단백질 함량은 모든 품종이 7.5% 이상으로 상당히 높은 편이었는데 이는 시비와 관개용수에서 많은 질소질비료가 공급된 결과로 보여졌다. 3. 김포간척지에 적합한 벼 품종은 수량성 면에서는 대안벼, 진품벼, 신동진벼이나 품질을 고려한다면 단백질 함량이 낮고 식미치가 높은 광안벼, 수라벼, 남평벼가 적합하다고 사료되었다.

남부지역에 적응한 양파의 품종선발 (Selecting Varieties of Onion Suitable at Southern Part of Korea)

  • 남부지방(南部地方)에 적합(適合)한 양파의 품종(品種)을 선발(選拔)하기 위하여 공시(供試)한 품종(品種)들에 대한 생육특성(生育特性), 구(球)의 특성(特性), 수량성등(收量性等)을 조사(調査)한 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하면 다음과 같다. 1. 수량성(收量性)이 높아서 선발(選拔)된 조생종(早生種) 양파는 패충조생, 극동황, 창녕청황극조생, 단오큰애기, 금정조생황이었고, 이 중(中)에서도 가장 수량성(收量性)이 높은 품종(品種)은 창녕청황극조생, 금정조생 황 이었다. 2. 조생종(早生種)의 수량성(收量性)과 가장 관계가 깊은 형질(形質)은 초장(草長), 엽초장(葉哨長), 구고(球高), 구경(球莖), 구중(球重)이었다. 3. 수량성(收量性)이 높아서 선발(選拔)된 만생종(晩生種) 양파는 창녕대고, 정풍황, 천주구형황, 천주대고, 서울대고였 고, 이 중(中에)서도 가장 수량성(收量性)이 높은 품종(品種)은 천주대고였다. 4. 만생종(晩生種)의 수량성(收量性)과 가장 관계가 깊은 형질(形質)은 초장(草長), 엽초경(葉哨莖), 구경(球莖), 구중(球重)이었다.

  • 대두품종의 파종기별 수량과 제특성간의 관계, 그리고 파종기별 수량의 품종간의 차이를 알고자 1962년과 1963년의 각 파종기에 대하여 실험한 바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 파종기별 수량과 몇가지 생태적 특성과의 상관관계는 Table 1과 같이 대체로 개화일수와 생육일수는 극만파(7월파종)의 경우를 제외하고 수량과 정의 상관을 보이고 그 정도는 조기파종구에 있어서 더욱 높았다. 그리고 개화기간은 수량과 부의 상관의 경향이 보이고 결실일수는 년차나 파종기에 따라서 그 관계가 명료하지 아니 하였다. 2. 파종기별 수량과 몇가지 형태적 특성과의 상관관계는 Table 2와 같이 대체로 분기수 경직경 1주중량, 1주맥수 그리고 1주입수는 수량과 어느 파종기에 있어서도 정의 상관관계를 보이고 경장과 수량 그리고 100 입중과 수량간에는 년차 파종기에 따라서 그 관계가 명료하지 아니하였다. 따라서 수량에 영향하는 특성은 개화일수, 생육일수의 두 생태적 특성과 함께 분기수, 경직경, 1주중량, 1주맥수 그리고 1주입수의 제형태적 특성이라고 할 수 있겠다. 3. 품종수량순위가 파종기에 따라 변동하는 경향을 보면 Table 3과 같이 대체로 공시품종중 울산, 상두, 장단백자, 익산, 함안, 반청두, 안전대입은 어느 파종기에 있엇도 높은 수량을 나타내고 이들은 성숙군이 IV, V, VI에 해당하는 중, 만생종으로 우리나라 중요재래품종들이며 극조생종이나 극만생품종은 수량은 떨어지나 극조생 또는 조생종중에서도 Black Hawk, 충북백 등은 만파의 우연에, 만생종인 동산006 등은 조파의 경우에 높은 수량을 보이는 품종들이었다. 4. 품종별 수량이 파종기에 따라서 변동하는 경향을 보면 Table 4와 같이 대체로 조생종에 있어서는 파종기 연장에 따라 수량 감소의 정도가 낮고 도리어 조파보다 만파의 경우에 좋은 성적을 나타 내었으나 중생종, 만생종일수록 파종기 연장에 의한 수량 감소의 정도가 높았다. 옥면과 같은 극만생종 품종은 조반의 경우라도 상해 등으로 본실험지의 기후조건 하에서는 경제적 재배가 곤란하다고 믿는다. 따라서 조생종에 있어서는 5월 이후의 만파의 경우에, 중, 만생종에 있어서는 4월보다 도리어 5월 파종의 경우에 좋은 성적을 나타내는 경향이 있으나 품종별 파종 최적기 등의 결정문제는 앞으로 해결되어야 할 한 과제가 될 수 있을 것이라 하겠다.

대두의 품종에 관한 연구 -제3보 생태형과 제 특성간 그리고 수량과 제 특성간의 관계- (Studies on the soybean varieties in Korea -III. Relationships between the ecotypes and various characteristics-)

  • Experiments were carried out to clarify the relationships between seed yields and some ecological characteristics, seed yields and some morphological characteristics, and the relationships among the varietal yields on the several sowing plots when grown under different climatic conditions. Twenty-four soybean varieties were used as the material, selected at random from 138 varieties which were cultivated the year before. These varieties were grown in the Experimental Farm, Chinju Agricultural College, Kyung Sang Namdo, Korea, and seed sowing was conducted at 5 times, from April to July, in 1962 and 1963. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Correlations between seed yields and some ecological characteristics on the sowing date bases are shown in Table 1. Among some ecological characteristics, it was observed that there wert close relationships between seed yields and days to flowering, and between seed yields and the total growing length, except on the late sowing, i.e. July sowing plots, However, there was no clear correlation between seed yields and durations of flowering, and between seed yields and days from flowering to maturity. 2. Correlations between seed yields and some morphological characteristics on the sowing date bases are shown in Table 2. From this table, it was also observed that there were some close relationships between seed yields and branch number for plant, stem diameter, plant weight, pod number per plant, and grain number per plant, but there was no clear relationship between seed yields and stem length, and between seed yields and 100 grain weight, on every sowing plot. 3. Relations between varietal yields and the sowing dates are shown in Table 3. Our leading varieties such as Ulsan, Sangdoo, Changdan Backmok, Iksan, Haman, Barchongdeo, and Anion Daerip, which belong to the maturity groups of IV, V, and VI, have been significantly high in yield at each sowing date plot, but the extreme early varieties, that frequently are damaged by insects, moisture and diseases, and the extreme late varieties, that frequently are caught by frost suffering reduced yield, are showed a lower yield than the others. However, extreme early varieties, for instance, Black Hawk, an American variety, and Chung Buk Baek, a Korean early variety, showed high productivity on the late sowing, June and July sowing plots, and Do san No. 6, which is late Japanese variety, showed a high yield on the extreme early sowing, i.e. April sowing plots. 4. Relations between seed yields and the sowing dates on the varietal bases are shown in Table 4. It was observed that, the early varieties did not differ much in yields at the various sowing dates while the yields of late varieties decreased progressively with subsequent dates. However, the extreme late varieties, such as Tamanishiki, that frequently are caught by frost suffering reduced yield, may be difficult to harvest at this location. The results in these experiments showed that in most cases maximum yields were obtained when leading varieties, which are medium or late varieties, were shown in Mid-May, and progressively lower yields were produced from June and July sowings. On the other hand, the late sowings of the early varieties, such as Black Hawk and Chung Buk Baek, in these experiments showed favorable yields compared with the others. From these results, we can predict that our local medium or late varieties produce higher yields at this location than was produced by early varieties in most of the sowing dates, especially the May sowing, and early varieties such as Black Hawk and Chung Buk Baek should be used in the late sowing, June sowing time.

Analysis of agricultural characteristics and qualities of wheat under high temperature

  • High temperature is one of major environmental stress. Heat in flowering season of wheat is able to effect negatively to fertilization and also heat effect to maturity. Therefore, Heat stress effects severely to qualities of wheat and yield productivity. In this study, we evaluated to agronomic characteristics and qualities by high temperature in 13 Korean wheat varieties. Weight of 1,000 grains decreased when wheat got the heat stress. In particular, heat stress during the heading dates were more damaged than after the end of heading dates except two varieties Keumkang and Jokyoung. Plant height of each cultivar under high temperature and normal field averaged 80.5 cm and 83.0cm, respectively. The length of spike and awn in each cultivar were similar to both condition. Flour yield and gluten contents of most heat damaged wheat decreased. Under the temperature, protein contents of six varieties like as Keumkang, Baekjoong, Hojoong, Yeonbaek, Joah and Shinmichal 1 decreased but the others increased. The sedimentation values (SDSF) of four varieties decreased under the high temperature. But SDSF of 7 varieties like as Baekjung, Suan, Hojoong, Jojoong, Uri, Shinmichal and Shinmichal 1 was increased. The lightness (L) of wheat flour derived from high temperature treated wheat was darker than non-treated wheat. As a result of this research, we confirmed that agricultural traits and qualities decreased in heat damaged wheat.
