Explosion Bulge Test has been carried out in order to evaluate base metal and weldment of high strength steels which used for submarine and aircraft carrier. High strength steels such as DS80/100/130 and PFS80/100 were developed by ADD and POSCO. In future, these materials will be used for the construction of larger submarine and aircraft carrier, and EBT is necessary to certificate hull materials for these. EBT methode in air and underwater was developed by ADD, and this report described the test procedure of EBT and the results of EBT for high strength steels.
In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of friction stir welding(FSW) for joining carbon steels, microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded carbon steels with different grain structures were investigated. In comparison of O-type stir zone(SZ) appeared in various aluminium alloys, configuration of SZ in friction stir welded carbon steels displayed U-type. Plastically deformed pearlite band structure was identified to surround the SZ, indicating the existence of so-called thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ). However, the TMAZ of carbon steels was much narrower than that of Al alloys. The microstructures of both stir zone and TMAZ revealed bainite matrix in a conventional carbon steel for shipbuilding, while, in the same region, ferrite matrix microstructures were formed in a low carbon fine grained steel. The conventional carbon steel showed superior stirring workability to that of the fine grained carbon steel. The yield and tensile strength of the friction stir welded joints were comparable to those of the base metals, and the elongation in welded joints demonstrated excellent ductility. Absorbed energy in SZ of the fine grained carbon steel was ten times higher than that obtained from conventional submerged arc weld metal of the same steel. Based on these results, the application FSW to carbon steels was found to be feasible.
The automotive industry has focused on the development of metallic materials with high specific strength, which can meet both fuel economy and safety goals. Here, a new class of ultrafine-grained high-Mn steels containing nano-scale oxides is developed using powder metallurgy. First, high-energy mechanical milling is performed to dissolve alloying elements in Fe and reduce the grain size to the nanometer regime. Second, the ball-milled powder is consolidated using spark plasma sintering. During spark plasma sintering, nanoscale manganese oxides are generated in Fe-15Mn steels, while other nanoscale oxides (e.g., aluminum, silicon, titanium) are produced in Fe-15Mn-3Al-3Si and Fe-15Mn-3Ti steels. Finally, the phases and resulting hardness of a variety of high-Mn steels are compared. As a result, the sintered pallets exhibit superior hardness when elements with higher oxygen affinity are added; these elements attract oxygen from Mn and form nanoscale oxides that can greatly improve the strength of high-Mn steels.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of alloying and rolling condition on the mechanical properties and to develop high strength line pipe steels with good toughness. Tests were carried out by the laboratory experiments followed by mill trials and mass production. It was found that a small addition of microalloying elements, such as Nb, V with Mo or Ti remarkably increased the strength and toughness of hot strips. The optimum condition of thermomechanical rolling on low carbon microalloyed steel improved the toughness through the formation of a fine and uniform microstructure. Based on this mill trials following the fundamental research, the production technology of line pipe steels, grade X70∼X100 with high toughness, has been established. These grade steels exhibit excellent low temperature toughness (vTs= under -80$^{\circ}C$) and sufficient strength in both the base metal and the ERW seam weld position, respectively.
In this study, high temperature tensile properties of high tensile strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) were investigated by elevated temperature tensile test. According toe the results, high temperature tensile strength of POSTEN60 deteriorated slowly to 100$^{\circ}C$. As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better because of blue shortness and it deteriorated radically after reached to the maximum value around 300$^{\circ}C$. For the POSTEN80, high temperature tensile strength deteriorated slowly to 200$^{\circ}C$.As the temperature went up the tensile strength became better and it deteriorated slowly to 600$^{\circ}C$ after reached to the maximum value around 300$^{\circ}C$. Strain of high tensile strength steels at the elevated temperature increased radically after the mercury rose to 600$^{\circ}C$. The strain hardening ratio of POSTEN60 was larger then that of POSTEN80 at the elevated temperature as in the case at the room temperature and it became smaller radically after the mercury rose to 400$^{\circ}C$.
Current need of weight reduction in automotive part increases the application for high strength steel (HSS). The various types of high strength steels have been used to produce chassis part, control arms and trailing arms for weight reduction and increasing of fatigue durability such as dual phase steel (DP) and ferrite bainite steel (FB). But, DP and FB steels have proven to show inferiority in durability as well as press formability. Edge cracking occurred often in flange forming and hole expansion processes is the major failure encountered. This paper discussed the behavior of edge stretchability of high strength steel of DP and FB steels. Experimental works have been conducted to study the effect of punch clearance and burr direction on hole expansion ratio (HER). Also finite element simulation (FEM) has been preformed to clarify the mechanism of flange crack and support the experimental results on HER of DP and FB steels. It was simulated the whole process of blanking process following by hole expansion process and ductile fracture criterion named the modified Cockcroft-Latham model which was used to capture the fracture initiation. From the hole expansion tests and FEM simulation studies it was concluded that ferrite bainite steel showed better stretch-flangeability than dual phase steel. It was attributed to the lower work hardening rate of ferrite bainite steel than dual phase steel at the sheared edge.
A study was performed to investigate the properties of base metal and weldment for two HSLA steels and one HY-100 steel. Tensile, yield strength and elongation of HSLA-A steel were superior to those of HY-100 steel and yield ratios in HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were higher than HY-100 steel owing to the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. The impact energy of HSLA-A steel was greater at all aging temperatures than that of HY-100 steel. HSLA-A and HY-100 steels had low impact transition temperature of about -l$25^{\circ}C$ and high upper shelf energy, The peak hardness of weldment in HSLA-A, HSLA-B and HY-100 steels were Hv 299, Hv 275 and Hv 441, respectively. The hardenability of HY-100 steel was largest due to the higher amount of carbon. The y-groove test showed that HSLA steels had superior resistance to cold cracking. Toughness of weld joint at the F. L. and F. L. +1mm in HSLA-A was almost the same as HY-100, but those at F. L.+3mm and F. L.+5mm was greater in HSLA-A steel.
In the present study, the effects of various heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dual phase ODS steels were investigated to enhance the high strength at elevated temperature. Dual phase ODS steels have been designed by the control of ferrite and austenite formers, i.e., Cr, W and Ni, C in Fe-based alloys. The ODS steels were fabricated by mechanical alloying and a hot isostatic pressing process. Heat treatments, including hot rolling-tempering and normalizing-tempering with air- and furnace-cooling, were carefully carried out. It was revealed that the grain size and oxide distributions of the ODS steels can be changed by heat treatment, which significantly affected the strengths at elevated temperature. Therefore, the high temperature strength of dual phase ODS steel can be enhanced by a proper heat treatment process with a good combination of ferrite grains, nano-oxide particles, and grain boundary sliding.
