  • The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars has been gaining popularity in the civil engineering community, as an alternative material to steel reinforcement, for their noncorrosive nature and high strength-to-weight ratio. Good performance of reinforced concrete requires adequate interfacial bond between the reinforcing material and the concrete because the load applied must be transferred from the matrix to the reinforcement. Although studies on the FRP bond behavior under monotonic loading has been reported by many, there are very little work done under cyclic loading. In this paper, we present the experimental study on the bond behavior of three different types of FRP rebars subjected to four different cyclic loading conditions.

  • This paper presents a fatigue assessment model that was developed for corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The proposed model considers the fatigue properties of the constituent materials as well as the section equilibrium. The model provides a rational approach that can be used to explicitly assess the failure mode, fatigue life, fatigue strength, stiffness, and post-fatigue ultimate capacity of corroded beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP. A parametric analysis demonstrated that the controlling factor for the fatigue behavior of the beams is the fatigue behavior of the corroded steel bars. Strengthening with one layer of non-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of beams with rebar at a low corrosion degree to the level of the uncorroded beams, while strengthening with 20- and 30%-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of the beams with medium and high corrosion degrees, respectively, to the values of the uncorroded beams. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the factors for the strengthening design of corroded RC beams fall in the order of stiffness, fatigue life, fatigue strength, and ultimate capacity.

  • In this study, the effect of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the fire resistance properties of fiber-reinforced cement composites was investigated. The main variables were CNCs content (0.4, 0.8 and 1.2vol.% compared with cement), steel fiber ratio, and exposure temperature (100, 200, 400, 600 and 800℃). The fire resistance properties, i.e., residual compressive strength, flexural strength, and porosity, were evaluated in relation with the exposure temperature of the specimens. The CNCs suspensions were prepared to composited dispersion method of magnetic stirring and ultra-sonication. CNCs are effective for increasing the compressive strength at high temperatures but CNCs do not seem to have a significant effect on flexural reinforcement. Porosity test result showed CNCs reduce the non-hydration area inside the cement and promote hydration.

  • Corbels are short cantilevers that project from the faces of a column and are a type of stress disturbed member, resisting both the ultimate shear force applied to them by the beam, and the ultimate horizontal force caused by shrinkage, temperature changes, and creep of the supported elements. Recently, as there have been an increase in the use of high-strength concrete and the concern about corrosion problems, lots of researches about hybrid reinforcing technique, applying strategically high performance reinforcements to the concrete elements, are performed. In this study, fiber reinforced high strength concrete corbels were constructed and tested for applying hybrid reinforcing technique to the corbels using steel fibers and headed bars. The results showed that the performance in terms of load carrying capacities, stiffness, ductility, and crack width was improved, as the steel fibers were added and the percentage of steel fibers was increased. In addition, the corbel specimens used headed bars as main tension ties showed superior load carrying capacities, stiffness, and ductility to the corbel specimens anchored main tension ties by welding to the transverse bars.

  • The present study experimentally and analytically investigates the effect of tensile reinforcement ratio and arrangement on the behavior of FRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The experimental part of the program was comprised of 8 RC beams that were tested under four-point bending. Results have shown that by keeping the total cross-section area of tensile reinforcing bars constant, in specimens with a low reinforcement ratio, increasing the number and decreasing the diameter of bars in the section lead to 21% and 29% increase in the load-carrying capacity of specimens made with normal and high compressive strength, respectively. In specimens with high reinforcement ratio, a different behavior was observed. Furthermore, the accuracy of the existing code provisions and analytical models in predicting the load-carrying capacity of the FRP strengthened beams failed by premature debonding mode were evaluated. Herein, a model is proposed which considers the tensile reinforcement ratio (as opposed to code provisions) to achieve more accurate results for calculating the load carrying capacity of FRP strengthened RC beams.

  • When UHSFRC is applied to structures, it can be expected that it shows excellent performance in a point of constructability and load capacity. However, its rich mix can cause some problems concerning the long-term behavior such as shrinkage and creep. Therefore it is inevitably needed to investigate its long-term behavior in order to apply it to structures safely. This study is dealing with the drying shrinkage of UHSFRC. UHSFRC shows relatively fast drying shrinkage in the early exposed ages and slow moisture diffusion caused by compact microstructure of the material. It was found that The KCI model to predict the drying shrinkage did not properly represent these properties of UHSFRC. therefore a modified drying shrinkage model applicable to UHSFRC, which has different shrinkage properties from that of normal concrete, was proposed

  • In this paper, weakly bonded ultra-high-strength steel bars (UHSS) were used as longitudinal reinforcement in recycled aggregate concrete shear walls to achieve resilient performance. The study evaluated the repairability and hysteresis performance of shear walls before and after retrofitting. Quasi-static tests were performed on recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (FRAC) shear walls to investigate the reparability of resilient shear walls when loaded to 1% drift ratio. Results showed that shear walls exhibited drift-hardening properties. The maximum residual drift ratio and residual crack width at 1% drift ratio were 0.107% and 0.01mm, respectively, which were within the repairable limits. Subsequently, shear walls were retrofitted with bonded X-shaped CFRP strips and steel plates wrapped at the bottom and retested. Except for a slight reduction in initial stiffness, earthquake-damaged resilient shear walls retrofitted with a composite method still had satisfactory hysteresis performance. A revised damage assessment index D, has been proposed to assess of damage degree. Moreover, finite-element analysis for the shear wall before and after retrofit retrofitting was established in OpenSees and verified with experimental results. The finite element results and test results were in good agreement. Finally, parametric analysis was performed.

  • Concrete structures become more common in railway systems with an advancement of high speed train technologies. As the service life of concrete structures increases, structural strengthening for concrete structures may be necessary. There are several typical strengthening techniques using steel plate and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, which have their own inherent shortcomings. In order to enhance greater durability and resistance to fire and other environmental attacks, basalt fiber material attracts engineer's attention due to its characteristics. This study investigates bonding performance of basalt fiber sheet as a structural strengthening material. Experimental variables include bond width, length and number of layer. From the bonding tests, there were three different types of bonding failure modes: debonding, rupture and rip-off. Among the variables, bond width indicated more significant effect on bonding characteristics. In addition the bond length did not contribute to bond strength in proportion to the bond length. Hence this study evaluated effective bond length and effective bond strength. The effective bond strength was compared to those suggested by other researches which used different types of FRP strengthening materials such as carbon FRP.

  • Precast deck joints have problems due to the occurrence of additional processes at construction sites, the complexity of construction, and the lack of design and construction standards for precast deck joints. To solve these, this study proposes a new precast deck joint that uses an Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-reinforced Cement Composite (UHPFRCC) filling material containing steel fibers and a straight rebar joint. In addition, the structural performance of the proposed joint, based on various parameters, was compared to that of existing precast deck joints, and the proposed joint showed equivalent strength and ductility. Therefore, the proposed joint can solve construction site problems by replacing the existing ones. The influence of various variables is expected to provide basic data on the design and construction guidelines for the precast deck joints.

  • To overcome weak and brittle tensile characteristics of concrete, many studies have been conducted on fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Recently, high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCC), which shows strain hardening behavior, has been actively investigated. However, most of the studies focused on the material behavior of HPFRCC itself. Only a few studies have been conducted on the tensile behavior of HPFRCC with steel reinforcement. Therefore, a tension stiffening test for HPFRCC members has been conducted in this study in order to investigate the effect of a reinforcing bar on the tensile behavior of HPFRCC. Tensile stress-strain relationship of HPFRCC has been derived from the tests. The HPFRCC resisted tensile stress continuously from the first cracking to the yield of reinforcing bar. Through the comparison with the tensile behavior of HPFRCC members without a reinforcement, it was shown the tensile strength and capacity of HPFRCC were reduced due to the combined effect of the high shrinkage of HPFRCC, restraining effect of steel reinforcement, and the strain hardening behavior of HPFRCC. It is expected that the tension stiffening test results can be useful for an application of HPFRCC with steel reinforcement as structural members.
